"You are either good, or you are not."

That's not what I said, and I don't think it backs up your actions.

You're either on the staff, or you are not. Being "good" is completely subjective; anyone can think they're good enough to be a judge. That's an ambiguity and dissolves the authority of the people are actually, unequivocally in charge of these kinds of things.

Real world application: We have police (Imm staff), and we have civilians (players). Yes, there's SOME grey area in the real world that allows for positions like bounty hunters. But that grey area doesn't exist in CF. There's no demarcation, no structure, no precedence, absolutely nothing to support the grey area you think you belong in (which you're defining as "good enough to judge everyone else and try to help the staff enforce rules but not on the staff").

When a player tries to "take the law into his own hands" like you do, it undermines authority. There are real good reasons why the line between Staff and Player should be about as crisp and clean as possible. When the line gets blurry, and authority is diluted, it gets harder to run, harder for people to have fun, and ultimately chafes at the game experience. And when you, the player, are trying to enforce rules, you're not contributing to other player's experiences, and you yourself aren't having fun.

All-in-all, it's the opposite of productive. I understand you're trying to help, your heart is in the right place, etc. But you, as a player (being NOT a staff member) should try to focus more on your role as a player. Which is to actually play the game. You will be much more helpful to the game and to everyone playing it and to yourself if you do.

If you find you absolutely can't back down from your desire to be an enforcer or in a position of authority of some kind, you should be making it your goal to actually obtain a position of authority within the system (as in, get on the staff). Which, by the way, the best way to get on the staff is to play your role as a player well.

33591, Being the one that dealt with this...
Posted by Nnaeshuk on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Hi!

I just figured I'd chime in, since I dealt with this personally.

Quick background: So, not only did Skraag send up a few prayers, he also told me personally via tell what was going on. Immediately, I started a dialog with both parties involved. After a bit of roleplaying and pointing out what I, as Nnaeshuk, thought was a poor decision on his part, I got back not only some high quality roleplay, but also what I saw as some good character development. It was almost as if a bulb went off as we worked through these misdeeds of his. I liked what I saw, so much that I inducted him.

You couldn't have seen the banter between us, so you had no clue that I spent a bit of time roleplaying and talking it out with him. I can see your frustration in this, but, as I tried to tell you IC, you didn't know the whole story.

I like to focus on the positive. Sure, I could have blown up on them, brought down some sort of wrath and screwed their character up or I could have helped them learn, grow, develop the character, and hopefully see them progress and do well. I chose to go with the second option. I feel it's better for the game that way and, more importantly, it's consistent with Nnaeshuk's roleplay. Forgiveness and acceptance is apart of good aligned RP.

Sorry if you don't agree with my decision, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat if things played out the same.

Note: If you're trying to get into Fortress, it doesn't mean you should go this route.

If goodies were so severely restricted so as to be prohibited from killing a sentient neutral NPC - which you are suggesting - I would never play a good align again.

The game flat out is not balanced to accomodate that kind of restriction. For example, you'd never be able to wear something as common as a helm of brilliance.

IMO in order to make something like that work,
1. Goodies would have to be able to request from neutral NPCs
2. Sentient neutral NPCs would not go aggro against goodies.
33597, In my strictest goodie characters..
Posted by Java on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I never killed any sentient neutral PC or NPC, unless they attacked first.

Helm of Brilliance, those neutral mobs are aggressive. If they're trying to kill me, I'm allowed to defend myself.

But Tarus's bracers? If they're not on the ground, guess I'll do without.

It's not THAT hard to do, really. But I completely agree that all goodie characters don't need to be played that strict. Really, you just need some sort of loose RP loophole.

So don't say "Yeah, I'm killing this Sergeant for his pendant." Instead, say "I'm killing this Sergeant, to cleanse him for his sins of serving the black hammer. Oh, and hey.. I'll go ahead and take this pendant, since he doesn't need it anymore."

I don't understand why it's so complicated.
33600, Shackling the benevolent
Posted by Swordsosaurus on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Tarus bracers are bupkis though, they stink. There's plenty of gear that would become inaccessible to good characters if this sort of RP was enforced. The only way I'd like to see this sort of mentality enforced, i.e. you can only kill neutral characters that attack you, is if it was changed back so that neutral characters will attack you if you request from them again. Heck, I'll ask for it. Actually, another solution would be if Good characters could somehow barter for an item off a neutral, but I'd rather see no change at all with no consequences for killing neutral npcs. Maybe Paladins and Healers shouldn't do it.

Here's my problem with all this, good characters, though not all of them, are good for people who aren't that great a CF. You can ask an elf or storm giant for a favor, if you're not evil, without much risk of them betraying you. They might not help, or there may be situations where you're enemies, but there's still much less risk involved. Punishing good players with nothing in return would only serve to drive people away from playing them and just seems like a bad idea.
33607, Well, it disgusted me when I played a paladin
Posted by incognito on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
All my gear was given to a neutral mob after Dullameh and some muter killed me. I didn't kill that mob to get it back because it would have been piss poor rp.

Meanwhile the other paladin who died in the fight hacked down the neutral mob that had his gear without a second thought.
33615, Oh I agree with you..
Posted by Java on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I also agree that a Paladin SHOULD take a much stricter stance than other good aligns. If that was my Paladin, I'd have been in the same boat as you, stuck regearing from nothing.

However, if that happened to a DIFFERENT goodie, I could see other reactions.

For instance, one goodie might say that neutral was HELPING evil by stealing his armor/weapons and refusing to return it. In that case, wouldn't the goodie be justified and gathering what is his own property?

After all, we need to treat neutral NPCs as living breathing entities. And that entity is pretending like we're not there, and holding onto ALL of our possessions. Preventing us from doing our duty and killing evil. He's HELPING evil, and hurting us.

Just saying, there may very well be justification for killing a neutral sentient mob. And using that justification does not make your character any less good.

Valg always tried to goad me into using the Herald more. I think he loved that little guy.

That said, Drokalanatym was supposed to be kind of an odd case -- an almost Cthulhu-mythos-like creature left over from some forgotten age when dragons were more alien and superior to man than in present-day Thera.

And just out of curiosity, how is it acceptable to kill for experience (leveling.. however you explain it IC), but not acceptable to kill for gear?

Assuming we're talking evil creatures here. What's the difference?

33617, No, I understood you.
Posted by Malakhi on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I just happen to disagree and think it's OK to kill a sentient neutral mob for gold/gear.

I'm sympathetic to your argument that a good person wouldn't kill someone unless their own life was in danger - but this is the game Carrionfields, not real life in 2010. In the game, Carrionfields, my POV is based on both game mechanics and RP reasons.

Game mechanics wise, I think it is a no brainer that good aligns should be able to kill neutral aligns. Players should not have to play on Pro's level of PK suckiness if they want to play a good align. Even you, who've had several PK successful evil characters, had a 5-13 PK record (or something like that) with the last good align paladin you played (that I'm aware of). I wouldn't be happy handcuffing myself to a playstyles that results in a 5-13 PK record. That's just not entertaining to me. Again, I wouldn't play a good align given the current game mechanics if I couldn't kill a sentient neutral NPC.

RP wise, my rationale is simply that these mobs are neutral, not good. These mobs are neutral, not "innocent." In the Carrionfields worlds, mobs and players are their alignement for a reason. There's a reason why you have the red aura and not the gold aura, even if you are a goblin baby. There's a reason you have no aura and not a gold aura, even if you're the sentient dragon guarding the Jade Vaults. There's nothing in the good align helpfile that states you should not kill neutrals - it states you should avoid harming "innocent bystanders." IMO, an "innocent bystander" has a Gold Aura. Neutrals, without that aura, are not "innocent." Again, there's a reason why they're Neutral and not Good.

Anyway, I could go on and on, but really this is a rehash of Valg's thread re: Good Alignment handicaps.
33620, See, I STRONGLY disagree with this..
Posted by Java on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
What makes someone "good", in the first place?

In the world of CF, doing nothing, just "existing" does not make you good. If you spend your life on a farm, taking care of your family and not getting involved in any other interests you're most likely "neutral" (hence all the neutral farmer mobs out there).

Obviously, everyone is "innocent" until they are "guilty" of something. Correct? So what is that farmer guilty of? He's guilty of "doing nothing". The fact that he "does nothing" would make him a "bystander", wouldn't it?

So it seems, logically, that that farmer is an "innocent" "bystander". Meaning he shouldn't be killed.

Again, I think you can find RP justifications for killing the majority of neutral mobs. HOWEVER, any truly good character NEEDS those justifications. "I want his gold" is NOT justification for killing someone for a good character. Killing for the sake of gold alone is NOT a good act.

Now, you're an Imm, so it's your prerogative if you want to turn the other cheek to that sort of behavior. But the danger of your Imm tag is that newer players reading this thread will think your viewpoint represents the entire Immstaff. History tells us that your viewpoint is NOT shared universally, with the playerbase or your fellow Imms.

I think it's clear that there is no "universal" viewpoint on good aligns killing NPCs. Like I said before, this issue was heavily discussed in Valg's thread here:

http://forums.carrionfields.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=6&topic_id=30799&mesg_id=30816&page=4

I think you go too far when you try to justify good-aligned characters killing "random sentient neutral".

I also think one could justify getting the helm of brilliance even w/ Pro's restrictions, since the mob in the way attacks YOU. Basically take Pro's restrictions with the special case that if a sentient neutral mob attacks YOU then you can finish the fight (i.e. kill that mob).

Ignoring the fact that my last paladin was Talanthius (i.e. I'm the twat that forgot his password and thus had a very short lifespan), are you talking about Gerandiel?

Anyway, I'm aware that good align has some handicaps, but equally there are trade-offs. If you wanted to balance the field somehow, I'd have thought a much better way would be to enforce good rp strictly, and make it so that only good aligns can be healers.

That said I never really play good aligns, but I always got the impression that it would be easy to regear by request.

33588, This is retarded.
Posted by Java on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Why are Fort characters held to a higher standard?

It's entirely possible (even probably) that Maran would be extremely harsh in their outlook, and zealous in their desire to destroy evil.

There are ABSOLUTELY ZERO rules in Fortress about killing Neutrals. Absolutely none. The only hard and fast rule as far as that goes, is that you don't kill Goods. Neutrals, if they are harboring evils, or preventing you from doing your duty (DESTROYING evil, not merely controlling it), then it is entirely possible AND acceptable for some Maran to get rid of the Neutral, to get to the Evil.

Don't hold Maran to a higher standard, when it comes to killing Neutrals. It just shows a clear lack of understanding of the cabal.

(I should mention, this is up to the individual Maran.. some Maran would NEVER harm a neutral. Some wouldn't think twice of it, if that neutral was protecting/harboring evil)

Paladins, though, are a trickier case. But there is nothing specifically in the Paladin Code that says you can't kill any Neutrals. You just need to have a good reason for it. That depends on the individual Paladin, but I can see theoretically reasons why that specific Paladin wouldn't have a problem killing those Wood-Elves. Still kind of weak reasoning, I'll admit.. but it isn't like he's completely throwing his RP away.
33589, Those prayers were Skraag.

Those prayers were IC, hence the use of his accent.

I don't think it's unreasonable to assume a Duergar would be amazed to see two uber-goodies behaving like he would and utter a prayer.

One of Skraags catch phrases was LAUWDY! (Lordy!)

If I had been a paladin or elf the prayers would have been more succinct.

My intent was that some sort of divine intervention would happen and I was prepared to play the part of a snivelling snot nosed duergar.

I prayed about it, I spoke to each character about it, I wrote them and the Cabal about it. I spoke to The Fortress Imm about it and (I think) they asked why they should believe me, to which, I asked them to ask the giant. Tying my words in with the giants wear of a shiney new suit of midnight should have warranted a "Did you murder some guardsmen just so you could have armor?"

And I don't post to Dio's anymore, and have visited it once in like 6 months.

FWIW, I liked Skraag.

I've always thought killing the wood-elf guards for the key to the midnight dragon was lame. Unfortunately, it's something that is absolutely, unequivocally acceptable in Fortress. Pretty much every Fortress warrior and paladin I've come across does it. It's one of those things, like getting pwent, that is acceptable because we (the player base) are more concerned with mechanics than really stellar RP at times.

I groan every time I see Fortress guys mowing down neutral NPCs for gold, preps, equipment, etc., especially when they use the dumb rationalizations. I think it's ####ty good-align RP, but it's been made very clear to me that in the context of CF, I'm better off shutting the #### up and letting people play their goodies how they want, because whether I like it or not, that is acceptable.

The same goes for non-Fortress goodies, of course. I'm just using Fortress as an example because they're supposed to be the goodiest of goodies.
33577, You're actively LOOKING for stuff to be mad about.
Posted by Java on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
You're not an RP detective. So why try to pretend like it?

And why does your CHARACTER even care what that Elf Paladin is doing? What RP reason did he have to follow them?

Remember, you're supposed to be playing a role too. I didn't see ANY RP from your perspective there. I saw an OOC idiot get pissed off at the mediocre roleplay of a Paladin.

At least the Paladin made a half-assed ATTEMPT at roleplay. That's more than I saw from you in this log.

And where do you get off assuming they got ANY kind of reward from the Imms? They may very well have gotten negative comments or something along those lines.

Imms don't usually induct. Players do. So the fact that a PLAYER who had no idea of this incident inducted another PLAYER isn't really an issue, is it.

And you ASSUME that the Paladin got a Virtue because of this? You're just hoping for reasons to be pissed off.

And if this game makes you WANT to be angry about something, maybe you should just leave.

FYI Pro, your char was a mere 3 days old at the time this took place.

Over that very short time span, you prayed about four people you were sure were cheating. One because, in your words, he was "too distracted, like he's talking to someone else."

That's more than one cheating allegation per day.

You also wrote a note that was borderline stupid, about some player who "Has been level 6 forever and just shows up and vanishes."

I'm not sure what you wanted that note to accomplish.

I think the other people who are posting that you seem to be looking for things to piss you off are probably right.

That said, if I'd been on for that pray, and paying attention, I would have probably smacked down a bit on them. I do think it's a bit powergamey and non-rp to do that, and here's why: Those guards are guarding the dragon, making sure it doesn't get loose.

There's another dragon mob in that same area and I don't really have a problem with good PC's (even paladins) killing that one (and doing all the assorted neutral-killing to do so) - because the neutrals they have to kill are essentially consorting with that dragon.

These guys? They were fairly innocent guards who were on the "good" end of the neutral stick.

But back to the point: Your first prayer was probably exactly what I'd have done in that situation - praying that something RP-bleh might be going down, so that an Imm can look into it if they feel so inclined.

After that? You got into what I like to call "Pro-mode." BY GOD SOMEONE IS GOING TO ACT ON THIS NOW DAMMIT! WHY AREN'T YOU ACTING ON THIS NOW, DAMMIT? SCREW THIS I'M DELETING BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T ACT ON THIS NOW. DAMMIT.

Oh and FWIW as the Imm who gave the virtue to the paladin, I can tell you he had the virt prior to your little outburst.

I'm overly upset about this. Moral relevance is not something I do well.

I get that way when I play overly aggressive characters and so I tend never to play evil except in a comical light, which this guy wasn't. He was a turd and I felt like one trying to get him to be one.

As for those prays, I'm the sort of person who, if they see's something in their environment that warrants more than a passing glance, I alert others around me and I tend to investigate. I didn't think they were cheating, but it sure seemed LIKE they we're cheating. Some people exhibit begaviors through there characters that come out in every character. When I see them, or a sertain style in their descriptions or dress, or path they walk, I am inclined to recall previous wrongs. When I do, I tend to send up a short pray.

I've been on the go non-stop for days and should have been sleeping rather than muding. :)

Alright it's out of my system I'm done with this. Thanks for the reply Twist. I feel better about the situation.

P.SM: The Virtue, I didn't know the Pally Had on. I was just saying "What's next? Reward him?"

Posted by Isildur on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
First of all, I agree with you that the role-play is a little questionable. But that's not even the problem. The problem is that you took it upon yourself to tattle on them for something that isn't even a rules infraction, putting yourself in the position of some sort of mortal RP "cop". If you had wanted to keep it IC then you'd have sent a note to Fortress and CC:d those two characters.

The reason I say the role-play is "a little questionable" and not "outright terrible" is that the wood-elves are harboring an ancient evil that they could otherwise destroy. Oh yeah, these are the same wood-elves who asked me to assassinate a dwarf engineer as I was walking through the mountains on the way to Evermoon.

Now I've usually taken the view that goodies, and especially Maran, shouldn't be killing neutrals just to "get to" evil that they want to kill. Like punking neutral guild guards to get to an evil person in the guild. But, at the same time, lots of people have disagreed with me on this and argued that goodies (and Maran) should have the role-play latitude to be more "hard-core" about their evil-killing.

You obviously disagree. And that's fine. But you fail to realize that the staff generally does not share your view. And, even the ones that do share your view probably view you praying about such behavior in a highly negative light.

It's like calling your local police department to tattle on someone for riding his bike on the side-walk. Is it technically illegal? Sure. Do the cops care enough to send a squad car out to ticket the guy based on your testimony? Hell no. And any reasonable person knows that, which is why the cops will probably be more annoyed with you for calling them than they are at the person breaking the law.
33568, Don't forget..
Posted by Java on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Those Wood-Elves are also holding several goodies (including at least one or two paladins) prisoner.

Pro seems to think Neutral = Innocent. That isn't always the case.
33569, First of all, you've used the word Tattle at least 4 times.
Posted by Pro on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
This is an immediat indication of your bias and is a word that nearly guarantees offense.

It's use can't be coincidental.

Secondly: The wood elves on the Mountain are not wearing moonstone or mithril, they are using copper. I wouldn't associate them with Evermoon and if I did, there's nothing that even remotly hints that they are under orders from Evermoon. Nothing in Evermoon indicates that they are anything more than peacful, frollicking, isolationists who imprisson rather than execute. Even Dwarves and orcs are in cells there.

Which brings me to my third of all, the wood elves are not harboring the dragon, they have it imprisioned like everyone else who has wronged them. Perhaps they are discussing it's fate and the fate of it's young.

So these two people marched from Galadon, to a foreign company to find a dragon their characters in some way heard about. When they get there, it's imprissoned by a peacful people.

Instead of snapping their fingers and acknowledging that their were sentient men here, they slaughter the four men, who I would immagine have families, and who up until then had been protecting their people that could lay waste to their entire culture.

I'm sorry, that's not like calling the police for riding on the side walk, that's murder, that's mayhem.

I don't see Thera as a map 200 squares across. Some regions are hundreds of miles to a room, some are 10's of feet to a room. I use my imagination to color it all in, it's not a small chessboard that the pieces reset. I come up with reasons for things like respawn and I put an IC description to it. I don't say things like "Repop".

These two characters violated some pretty serious cabal and class rules, and that paladin's code was shreaded, caught fire and flushed down the toilet and while they may not have violated any game rules that would get them denied, that was a willful and wanton act of murder for personal gain.

So your feelings for me aside, logic says, those two should not be rewarded and the Paladin should have been punished.

But you and other's won't be able to get past the PDS you so illogicaly hold.
33570, You're delusional.

Yet you are not in the position to actually ever do anything about that. Hell, look at the IMMstaff. Beroxxus just posted something about not getting enough IMMattention.

I'm sure there have been times Dev, Zulgh, Valg have stepped on each others toes on something.

But you let these things go, and you end up knowing that the main goal of CF is for people to have fun.

Have fun, man.

Don't decide to follow some storm app and elf fortress to the midnight dragon. You aren't some investigative reporter, and if you are, don't pull that crap into CF. Play CF, enjoy CF. Don't try to find the ####ty part of some other player. Because ultimately, I am positive your characters are not perfect. For all that you talk about grammar, I would be surprised if you spoke in perfect grammar in character ALL the time. I'd be surprised if your characters all exhibited top notch RP(in my eyes of course since I'm guessing in your eyes they are all perfectly RP'ed).

Seriously, you're far older than I am, how you react to certain things just isn't healthy for you.
33546, Here's the deal.

That just ####ing #### all over any semblance of goodness or morality.

It was two characters that should epitomize it and at least one of them get's inducted into the Fortress after murdering a guard who is watching over a dragon that has eaten one of the royal family.

This wreaks of some OOC #### because noone sane could possibly justify that as good IC behavior.

Furthermore, your suggestion to let it go, is no well considered. There are rules and traditions in every game, CF not withstanding. #### like this is wrong in this game and shouldn't be condoned, it should be corrected.

Or do we just say #### it and let orcs be paladins?

This is B-fukking-S.
33547, And you getting pissed off about it WAS IC? nt

33548, I get it, I really do.

OOC #### runs rampant. But reacting this way isn't healthy to you and it's 99.99 percent not going to change a single thing. So why bother with it? Why not use CF rather than letting it use you?
33549, How often do I unload like this?
Posted by Pro on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Rarely.

This is systemic, and I think it should be looked into.

This isn't something that needs to be done IC. It's something that no has IC justification and thus I have to wonder, how this guy was inducted.
33550, You are always complaining about something. NT

I don't get this pissed.

That giant should never have been made Fortress after that and should have probably been made neutral.

For #### sake I had a CG thief turned neutral for looting a goodie corpse... By Nep.
33553, Dude...that's on a totally different level.
Posted by sleepy on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
At least goodie vs. neut is sort of a gray area.
Goodies looting other goodies = mucho bad.
33554, RE: Dude...that's on a totally different level.

I see your example exactly opposite.
33555, RE: Umm constantly?

You realize almost all goodies kill neutral mobs like this to get gear? I've seen even the so called leet RPers do this all the time as goodies. I don't think it's that bad because at the end of the day the game would be too restrictive on them if you didn't allow some of this. Now if they started ranking on neutrals that would be different. So to sum it up, while this is definately not good RP, it's not really as big a deal as you think.
33556, I don't follow people over cliffs.

I could care less if other people do it. Wrong is wrong.
33628, I thought you said. . .
Posted by dwimmerling on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
You only loot your own kills unless it's a raid. Besides that, it's totally different. You looted a goodie. They killed neutrals.

What you are describing and espousing is what can be called "Ethical Relevance".

There is right and wrong in the world and in our lives. It's okay to get upset and assert your own views. I personally think your view would make CF worse as it condons, if tacitly, the acceptance of rule breaking.
33558, There is no rule that says goodies can't kill neutrals.
Posted by TMNS on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
So, um, what's your point?

Or are you ranting again with no point whatsoever?
33544, FWIW, I've seen many good-aligned chars attack the guards to get the key.
Posted by sleepy on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I'm not sure how else you expect all those good-aligned PCs to be able to get midnight gear.

EDIT: Well, many is an exaggeration as I havent personally seen many. But more than one or two, to be sure.
