Zulg's awake...and didn't do anything...but we're up and running. Looking at the logs, it looks like the SQL server crapped out on us at some point, and then the hosting company rebooted the server sometime later.

You guys ever look into using Amazon's EC2? Too expensive?

EC2 has been steadily getting worse and worse value for your money over the years. I'd be more comfortable with a server in my basement over a cable modem than EC2 images at this point.

Are there competing services that aren't crap?

There are but I'm no longer recommending cloud services to clients until an open standard to prevent vendor lock-in comes out. For simple apps or apps running over a limited time period its fine but for larger systems with more capital invested the threat of vendor lock-in is too significant to ignore.
