32590, Examine here
Posted by Valkenar on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Is there a particular reason examine can't take the "here" keyword?

The reason I would like it is "look crate" won't tell me what's in the crate, or even if it a container. So I can "look here crate" and not see the contents, or I can "examine crate" and unwittingly look at my own crate.

I'm in the habit of using examine all the time because it gives full information on items and when exploring I would have to "look here keyword;look in keyword" for everything, which is kind of annoying. The problem is I sometimes miss things if I happen to be carrying an item that unbeknownst to me has the same keyword as something in the room. For example, I once had a ring with some "colors" in the description that prevented me from seeing the "colors" in the room. Since I didn't know my ring had that keyword, I had no idea it was the ring I was looking at and not the room.

This can be gotten around with exa 2.keyword but that's fairly clumsy and requires knowing that I have the keyword on me.

Just a small thing I've always wondered about.

Anyway, I would like to either see "look here xyz" show the contents of containers or "exa here xyz" to target the same keyword "look here xyz" would
32882, Examine vs. Look

First the change I made:
look should now do the right thing with regards to containers and always show you what's inside.

Details for those interested:
Examine is, and has always been, a simple stupid wrapper around the look command. Look is the superior, more robust command, except for the fact that it wouldn't tell you what's inside an object when it found it unless you specified (look in <obj> or look exa <obj>, the latter likely being an undocumented feature).

Examine vs. Look + Observation XP:
Since examine is just a wrapper around look, it has never mattered which one you did, you would get observation xp.

Just to clarify... "look <container>" now shows us the contents of that container automatically? No more "look in" required? And this goes for ALL containers, including worn, in your inventory, on the ground, and ones in the room?

Yes. You also still have the option of "look in"

Yes, it should work with all the various flavors of look (look here, look inv, etc). If it's not post it to the bug board, I may have missed a case or two.

No kidding, the "x" key is missing on my laptop. Was a big hassle!

I've always used the look command or look in. Am I missing out on information or items by not using the "examine" or "examine/look here" commands?
32600, You can find things that are containers with examine.

When I explore I use examine and my fancy alias ll which is set to examine. That way when I finally find the keyword to the box that holds the potion of allmightyness I can see what's in it.

If you use "look" and then don't immediately "look in" then you could be missing stuff. There's no indication at all when you should "look in" vs "look" You could try guessing by the type of thing, e.g. if it's a "chest" maybe you want to "look in" it, but then again there's a ton of chests, wardrobe, desks, etc around that aren't containers.

So if you want to be *really* sure you need to "look here <keyword>" and then "look in <keyword>" every time "look here" showed something.

So I just noticed there is an examine here option. Is that new or am I an idiot for not noticing for some amount of time?

Incidentally, it doesn't seem to actually work. If I "examine pit" at a galadon temple, I get the contents. If I "examine here pit" I just get the description.

Is the same as look here, which is why people use examine instead, it gives more information. I would certainly support rolling up examine and look together, but making the examine behavior consistent would certainly be a plus.

...Maybe leave both look and examine, but make the functionality identical.
32592, Look an examine should be shoved into one command. It's dumb. -nt-
