32383, Nexus and the veil.
Posted by Odrirg on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I'm fairly up on most of the IC reasons and philosophies in Thera.
Except this one part of nexus.
Good/evil order/chaos. I get that. Keep it all balanced. Keep everything balanced. Balance is good.
Except, it seems, when it comes to magic.
Balance in everything....except MOAR MAGIC IS MOAR GOOD! heh.
I mean, I don't ever notice nexus characters bringing magic items to Tahren to thicken a veil that is too thin. Does that happen and I just haven't noticed?
Looking from the outside, I'm having trouble linking the "balance everything" with "keep the veil thin at all times" philosophies.
Ooc, from the outside, I get it. Balance everything doesn't automatically make them village enemies. So throw something about magic in there.
I just don't know the IC reasoning behind it. And it bugs me that I don't know. heh.
Is it some secret stuff? Or can it be explained here? I noticed there is no Nexus room in the hallway in the Academy that has all the cabal rooms.

Not really, no. When you look at it, there is one cabal that hates magic that goes almost completely unopposed (let's face it, Scion is a small cabal in size and often has other troubles than ragers) if Nexus does nothing. Essentially, you stop thinning the magic, don't hurt battle and let ragers re-thicken the veil. That way, you don't have to work to re-thin it again when ragers keep thickening it.

32385, I gave items to Tahren several times to thicken the Veil nt

Nexus is about balance. However what is viewed as balanced for magic is a couple of notches above the general equilibriam of Thera. That means that a lot of the time they have a reason to be actively trying to improve the strength of magic.
There is a point where magic gets "Too strong" and at that point nexuns will take steps to make magic weaker, this includes relinquishing the battle item(nexuns can actually do this without their guardians having to be killed), killing mages, giving items to Tahren. It does happen however the instances where magic is so uber strong that they have to tone it down are very rare in general and if you are an enemy of nexus you probably logged out long ago so you wouldn't notice it likely.
The IC reason is that they view it as balanced when it is that way. I mean when it comes to good and evil you can quantify it more easily by saying look 3 fort and 3 scion balance. When it comes to magic it is not as easy to quantify, look 3 mages and... 3 not mages?

The magic balance thingy has five tiers on it just like the others do. I don't remember what they are anymore since they changed how it reads. But according to the library they are supposed to keep it on the middle tier.
Sometimes the village is so strong that the Nexus goes on a kind of war with them and keeps the veil super thin to better kill them off. I've been in the nexus under these circumstances twice. It's a leadership thing and the Imms don't seem to say much against it. As Grecken I became leader under this type of situation and... I forget that thief's name but we (the rhyme and meter) decided the village needed thinning so we agreed to keep the veil super thin. When the village numbers dwindled and we'd con-killed a few of them and a few deleted and what not as Grecken I killed the keep it thin policy. I was the only leader at the time so I felt like it was my perogative to go back to a more traditional way of looking at things.
The thing to remember is that while a lot of things within a cabal doctrine are hard wired, and in the nexus part the balance is pretty much hard wired, a LOT of it isn't as hard coded black and white as people think. There are no rules governing cabal politics, inside or out.

I recall Daevryn saying something to the effect... if I ever catch you giving items to Tahren you are going to get a swift kick in the nuts.

That sounds like something Daevryn would say/do. :)
Rayihn or Twist might give you a different answer, though.

32403, Neres had no nuts! :P

But can you elaborate please? Why you think this is bad?

32405, Daevryn's IC Persona, I think.
Posted by Straklaw on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Not that I'm expert enough on it to say what Daevryn would be doing, but that would be my guess.
Daevryn the OOC Nexus Admin hat says go ahead and give items back, it's good for balance.
Daevryn the Burning Desire, IC Imm says he don't like it.
Sorta like how ICly, I don't know that you'll ever find a point where Twist says magic is too strong...which, I guess that'd leave Rayihn saying give things back to Tahren :P

32410, That's part of it:
Posted by Daevryn on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
That is to say, Daevryn's RP is part of it.
The OOC part of it is that, really, Nexus should have a little bit of foresight and patience and, where appropriate, make small adjustments to bring things into balance, vs. making giant adjustments that just tip the balance the opposite way.
It's very rare that magic ends up super-winning and it's not because some idiot in Nexus decided, "Magic's a little bit weak. Let me cram a thousand ####ing items into the Vault and see what happens."
Nearly always, the people who want to give an item to Tahren to fix the magic balance are the same people who ####ed it up in the first place and should be using the suicide command instead to fix it.
With my 'what's good for balance' OOC hat on I don't 100% oppose doing it, but since 99% of the cases where someone wants to are because they or someone else did something stupid, I feel okay about opposing it.

32412, Not really
Posted by Rayihn on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Rayihn is a big fan of magic. She generally views Nexus as more or less a magic cabal, and thinks magic should always be at least a little winning.

So essentially, in Nexus we've got bad cop, bad cop, and bad cop policing the growth of magic. :)

>So essentially, in Nexus we've got bad cop, bad cop, and bad >cop policing the growth of magic. :)
*rofl* Two things I just have to point out here.
First off, let me point out in a humorous sense that do we really wonder why people say Nexus is broken, when that's the administrative structure?
Secondly, that I now envision Nexus leadership as so:
Twist - Super dirty, corrupt magic cop taking bribes everywhere. Rayihn - Not really dirty cop, but definitely doesn't mind a few "perks" of the job such as free magic coffee. Daevryn - Mostly the good cop, but too tired of dealing with dirty cops and idiot rookies to care.
Meter and Rhyme - Hell, they're not even official cops. They're just the head of the local vigilante crew, voted from within!
Honestly, Daevryn's the GOOD COP!?!??

32409, Twist would probably threaten to burn your nuts off.
Posted by TheLastMohican on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Then his decked out mortal would give the stuff to Tahren anyway after he killed you :)
But yeah, I'd imagine if you gave stuff to Tahren Twist would NOT be happy.
