31461, Scions
Posted by Restless on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Is anybody ever going to appoint a chancellor sometime soon? Getting a bit tedious waiting around for a advisor that plays at at hours in the BFE hours of the night and battling endless hordes of imperials and not receiving even a peep from a immortal even. I spoken to Morgul and Saffi and they both have not heard response to their pledges either.

Is it time to Defunct the Scions of the Eternal Night?

(and no offense if you are an experienced player...)

From my experience as a scion, you wouldn't necessarily get a response to a pledge (or a note to scion).

A pledge/note certainly can't hurt you (assuming you don't write something retarded in a note), and may even help you. But it may not cause a direct approach by any scions.

All a note does is make scions aware of your intentions. Fighting and dying demonstrates (if noticed) that you are willing to make sacrifices for the cabal (although always dying suggests that you won't achieve much as a result). So it's not like you are doing anything wrong by the sound of it.

Ultimately though, if places are tightly contested, you may need to be showing even more. It is meant to be the hardest cabal to get into, in that it is the most restricted in terms of numbers. It could be also argued that the cabal is designed for the people that like having lots of enemies without being called on to support allies much. If you don't like the situation you are in now, it isn't going to be all that different if you are in. You will still be in a cabal with low membership fighting against multiple cabals with lots of members.

If you aren't exceedingly talented at/enjoying the game of cat and mouse involved in hunting down and eliminating members of an outnumbering cabal, you had better re-tune your role to Empire.

Either that or you had better find a way to nuke groups of people consistently and easily without needing 50 unholy weapon charges.

Scion is tailored to those who are more or less constantly on offense, both for induction and day to day duties. You can play a more peaceable role, hell even Outlander allows for them, but they have little to no room for true support characters aside from healers, and someone who is only average at the given class they're playing shouldn't even bother trying.

If you are not ready for Scion you had better get used to hunting specific cabals one at a time as various uncaballeds, including figuring out how to rank, before tackling several cabals at once.

I played a scion bard with a barely >50% PK ratio. Didn't even apply until 51, and got in pretty quickly and easily. That all had to do with roleplay, and basically nothing to do with PK. I even made advisor.

So while what you're saying might be truish in general, it certainly isn't true that you shouldn't even bother if you are only average at the class. You can make a lot of that up with RP.

scion was actually the first cabal I got into. I wasn't very good at pk then, but was decent at RP. Even not being good at pk it was still fun and I learned a lot about the game and the cabal.

I think people fail to realize there are a few kinds of newbies and one is better for Scion than the others. If you can take the mindset of "I'm going to RP the hell out of this, I know I'm going to die like mad and I'm going into this knowing that and ok with that" then I think you could do fine in Scion. The problem is there are very few people who can actually take this attitude. Most might THINK they're ok with it but actually aren't. The things you say after you die really prove whether you can handle it or not. Restless up there...not so good at keeping it IC after a bad death.

A bard in scion is rather useful as a support character, since adding anthem to ABS always helps, as does all the other songs. That and a bard's ability to prep quite a bit with talismans and have area songs make them a pretty decent scion, far better than a warrior I'd say, but maybe not as good as an assassin just because of their hide and assassinate abilities. Then again, grand nocturne will usually drive off three or four foes at once, but usually that just buys some time before they come back again.

My first bard ever got asked by the chancellor and advisor to join scion even though I did not even pledge. Saying blanket statements just does little to encourage newer players to try it out. I'd say if you want to try to be a scion, try to be a scion. It does take a bit more than hey I'm evil to get in, but most average players should have little trouble making it in.

Barring a certain amount of luck, as a Scion pledge, you need to bring something to the table besides wanting to get in and dying fighting the enemies of the cabal. Your problem is less about finding someone who can induct you and more about finding someone who thinks you should be inducted.

If you get waxed repeatedly by the hoardes when you aren't in scion, they are still going to be there waxing you when you are.

No, but it might be time to point out astroturfing.

The advisor does induct people from outside her hours based on what other scions are telling her. If you haven't heard from the advisor, you probably haven't impressed the other scions much.

Even when you do impress, don't expect to hear quickly. Just know that the reason you are waiting around isn't your playing times. The last person inducted didn't play at the same time as the advisor.
