31046, Racial Kinspeak
Posted by Kez on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I'm certain this has been brought up before, but I figure since kinspeak has come in maybe this can too.
It's very simple really, races with their own language, such as Dwarves, Elves, Drow, etc can speak to each other in that language. Other races will see gibberish, or simple an echo informing them that the character is speaking in an unknown language.
Perhaps all Elves share the same language, or perhaps they have their own.
You could also make general edges to speak these languages. Half race could learn Elven/Drow at significantly reduced cost.
Maybe make it an on/off toggle which changes all spoken words to in that language, rather than a extra command to be used.
It won't add a huge amount to the game, but I can see it adding to the complexities of RP and making role play much more enjoyable. Especially if it can be used over CB, yelled, etc.

I think it would be a fun addition to RP, even though Zulg shot it down, still want to put my $.02 in. Although I think it best as maybe a cheap edge for each race, and expensive for out of race to learn it. So not everyone can be complete assholes, they'd have to use edge-points just to be an asshole...which I think would deter most.

I actually did this on a previous mud I worked on...it's not as exciting as you think, especially if you have something like a common-tongue. The majority of folks will pick a single language to speak, and there will be a few folks who want to be jerks who will never use it, and a few folks who would actually use it as an RP tool.
As Valg said, we're not interested in making communication harder (except for minotaurs...screw those guys)

"As Valg said, we're not interested in making communication harder (except for minotaurs...screw those guys)"
Is that because at least 50% of all minotaur are played by Krilcov?

31052, This has come up previously.

Essentially, we're not interested in working on changes that decrease the amount of IC communication on the MUD.

31053, I was trying to find the original post about this...

...but I was lazy.
Shocker huh?

I am not convinced that making sure that a certain part of the MUD cant understand you is improving the RP. I think it would just decrease the amount of communication.

31048, It would make things increasingly interesting with politics!

I'm thinking empire. Perhaps you feel safe to discuss your plans in the drow languish with your companion, feeling secure that a certain person with a certain power can't understand you even though he can hear you... OR, perhaps that person actually have learned that language and now knows all about your intricate plans. :D
Either way, I think it would add some nice dept to the RP. And possibly some funny situations. :D
I'm thinking something like this:
Your view when you speak:
You say (Elvish) 'These humans... They all need guidance as they rush through their short lives.'
The human who doesn't know elvish hears:
Arrna says 'Elmuahdri ergor... Eeil ib la jouhlanee e hog jfoep eioap owps kfeh.'
Or some other gibberish looking more elvish (or if someone actually knows elvish the correct translations... But that would be quite a bit of work. heh)
Cool idea though!

31049, Add edges to understand the languages too, at least for humans only. nt

31050, Exactly.

Valg was talking earlier about Team Evil being too friendly. One very obvious way to add racial tension or at least highlight racial differences is to have completely different languages come through on CB.
Even in cabals like the Village where I feel too many players dump their race/background and simply become a Villager, and therefore love and adore every other Villager.
Hell, some cool roles could come through where people ONLY speak in their racial language.

31047, or maybe set it up so the guildmasters can teach you new languages. nt
