31015, Questions about Scion leaders
Posted by Dervish2 on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Just saw new Advisor and gow a question
Baer, how do you define who will be who? What post this char deserves - Advisor or Chancellor?
I remember Frismund was Advisor and Lornis was Chancellor, then Lornis deleted and BAM new Chancellor but not Frismund.
So it may be that someone is worthy of Advisor post but not of Chancellor post?
Just curiousity here, nothing else. Never played Scions.

31025, Traditionally:

I recognize that the positions have evolved under more recent leadership, but the original concept was that:
1) The Chancellor ran the cabal and its exterior relations. Induction and uninduction outduction, dealing with other people of import, setting the rules, etc. If a raid or defense was happening and the Chancellor was around, they led the efforts. The Chancellor could grant appropriate non-Scions a temporary status where other Scions would not attack them-- most commonly for spies or other functions for outsiders. This was not used for lackeys-- if someone was a worthy ally, the Chancellor should recruit them. If not, the cabal does not need the dead weight.
2) The Advisor provided objective feedback on the Chancellor to the Chancellor, the archmage, and to the cabal Immortals. If someone better than the Chancellor was noted within the ranks, the Advisor informed the Immortals. The Advisor also policed the ranks periodically-- spot inspections designed to determine if the Chancellor was inducting worthy Scions, and weed out the unworthy ones. Ideally, the Advisor was feared and hated by most other Scions, especially the Chancellor.

Bero told me once that the Advisor's responsibility was to kill the Chancellor if necessary. I always thought that added an interesting dynamic.

31028, Yup.

The implication above was that if someone better than the Chancellor was noted, it is expected that the Chancellor would not step aside peacefully, and would be too dangerous thereafter to keep around.

The first time "Advisor to the Chasm" (or some derivative) became "Advisor to the Chancellor" was when I was playing Mekantos and Foslin was the Chancellor. We despised each other and were overriding each other all the time (it was pretty funny). At some point we were both spoken to and things were laid out a bit better...although the duties were never spelled out like you just did.

31021, To me, the roles made the choices

Frismund was genuinely a source of advice for scion members. The others were not, imo.
Certainly when I've led scion (as Chancellor), my advisors were my number 2 rp-wise, but equal in terms of practical power. The relations I had with them were more about how we already interacted than about our positions. Drezen, for example, I already had great respect for.
If you think about it, a lot of people (Mergulla people especially) might want to be the power behind the throne, rather than the one on it. In such circumstances the advisor could be the more powerful politically too, I suppose.

31016, they are more or less the same level different jobs

OF course every pair divies up duties a little differently but one is more quality control the other is more human resources.

While I was in scion with Kalisda Lornis and Frismund both kept to themselves really, outside of occassionally gathering others for tasks. They both had things they wanted to do and so they would just do it. Basically, if either told a scion to do something the scion would do it or risk getting booted/killed. They generally conferred with one another about big things like declaring war (kind of pointless since everyone fights them, but this involved declaring on the tribunals) and maybe to an extent inductions, but the biggest difference I saw was Frismund followed Lornis's orders, and to a lesser extent Tinsalaop's. Otherwise they are pretty equal, and not always did they agree. They kind of play out both sides of arguments about how to do things, but of course all three of them pretty much just made sure when they were on scion was beating people/cabals down all the time. Frismund spoke with Kalisda on a lot of general things, probably just because they were the two oldest in the cabal, but really those two had the only say on things related to the cabal.
And advisor does not mean next in line for chancellor, as you saw, but I suppose it could, especially if there is perhaps some rp angle to it like a betrayal or something. Scions are afterall evil people that all generally only look out for themselves, or at least that is most of the roles of scions you see.
