29881, Lets look for a collective solution
Posted by Tarious on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I have considered this post since CF first went down. I wanted to avoid posting this publicly, but I am unsure how to reach our Immortals another way. I sent an email to a certain Immortal; however it was returned to me undeliverable. I suspect the Imm@carrionfields.com accounts are also affected.

So I’ll post my thoughts here.

- Is this a money issue in some way? To be frank, I do not believe that our Immortals have no idea what exactly happened to bring CF down. If CF is experiencing a cash flow issue or equipment failure, I am confident we can remedy this problem.

- If this is hardware or hosting issue…Someone must have a back up. We can use a temporary server and host offsite until a more permanent solution presents itself.

- If we cannot find a certain Implementer who doesn’t have much to do with CF anymore, send team Russia. The Russians are very resourceful!

As I see it, we are all part of Team CF. Share some knowledge with us and perhaps we can collectively solve the issue.

If this is a money thing….email me

While offers to help seem like a good idea from the outside, from a legal standpoint, the ones in the know really can't "share some knowledge". Only implementors are going to be in the know and even in that case, it's probably just certain implementors. They may tell other immortals who have signed the agreements with CF, but they know they can't share it either.

Not sure what you mean about "share some knowledge" or anything, but if Zulgh and Daev and Twist have access to backup copies of CF, they can probably buy hosting space somewhere else if they absolutely have to. It's not like CF is going to sue itself.

Edit: Who technically "owns" CF LLC, and CF the game? Is the owner of CF LLC likely to get pissed off if the implementors take the intellectual propertly of CF the Game to another server? Because it seems like sure, it might technically be breaking agreements and copyrights and ####e, but it's a non-profit hobby-type entity, is this really something that somebody would take to court?

Uhhh... I dunno either. Contract issues or something? If it -is- a billing problem (as in someone forgot to pay the light bill) then there really is jack that anyone could do about it from the outside even if they had a fistful of cash. And rightfully so, confidential and personal information at stake.

Without either contacting the current contract holder or creating a new contract, yer stuck.

So I doubt it's so much that anyone would sue anyone as it is you literally can't do anything unless it's clone CF again and get a new host or the same old host under a different account. But with PBF, that probably presents an entirely different huge pain in the butt set of problems to deal with.

"clone CF again and get a new host or the same old host under a different account. But with PBF, that probably presents an entirely different huge pain in the butt set of problems to deal with."

That's basically what I'm suggesting as a worst-case scenario; take back-up copies to a new host. If all the information from the website and the game is still intact, it should work identically. Maybe we have some tempororary hitch-ups with the main website and PBFs, but at least the game would be back up, and those could be restored eventually. In the meantime, use Dio's as the front door.

This assumes back-up copies exist offline on some implementor's hard drive; I'd be surprised if they didn't.

Edited to add: from Zulgh's recent announcement post this doesn't seem necessary. But in a future CF apocalypse it might be!

Believe me, if it were that simple, I am sure Zulg or Daev would have done that. I just know based upon the agreement I signed just to be an immortal that it wouldn't be that simple.

CF, LLC is like any other company. Jullias is the CEO and the implementors are the board of directors. The rest of the imm staff are the employees and their level determines their position.

That being said, a collective solution in a company is determined by the CEO and the board. Employees and users of the product can offer suggestions, but will probably remain in the dark until something official is put in place.

Side note: Being that I have never been an implementor for CF, the above understanding is how I see it as it was explained to me. It may or may not reflect the opinions of the implementors or the staff.

Nice to see you back on the boards, btw.

I'm just talking hypothetically, really, if worse comes to worse and all other options are exhausted, regardless of the actual legal structure of CF, I doubt there would be issues with relocation. The guys on top care more about the game being up and running than with legal mumbo jumbo. The worst consequence (that I can speculate, from an outside and uninformed viewpoint) is we temporarily lose PBFs and the cafepress store while the legal stuff is re-worked.

Thanks.

The basic gist of what I am trying to get across is that until the people on top make a decision on how to proceed, we are pretty much going to be in the dark. And there are legal reasons that it has to be that way.

I don't think anyone's asking for detailed information of the inner workings of the game. People are just curious what the general problem is, and if they can help. The rumor mill isn't helping a whole lot either. Also, like he said, most of us would be willing to help if it's financial in nature.
