29346, Assassin questions
Posted by NMF on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I saw a log of Isildur's assassin doing DEMO and DEVA on ground control.
Is ground control success an damage based on str or skill %?
Is crescent kick likely to improve quicker if done on mobs or pcs that have weapons wielded?
Does anyone actually use poison darts?
If you take a Buki edge, do you get those attributes every time you slip in to martial trance?
Does Raon Buki (titanic strength one) give you a bonus to strength like (8+ str) or does it set your natural strength to 25?
Any additional advice about edges for a felar assassin that will likely face gangs, would be handy.
Thanks.

Mostly skill and level.
>Is crescent kick likely to improve quicker if done on mobs or >pcs that have weapons wielded?
Not sure.
>Does anyone actually use poison darts?
Mostly no, but they should. It's a very underrated skill.
>If you take a Buki edge, do you get those attributes every >time you slip in to martial trance?
Yes.
>Does Raon Buki (titanic strength one) give you a bonus to >strength like (8+ str) or does it set your natural strength to >25?
The former.

There are edges that boost ground control damage (both on throw and owaza), but I didn't have any of them.
Darts are great for killing mobs, since you can slow them. They're less great for PCs because AFAIK the target notices when you miss. So darting someone gives them a chance to leave before you can follow up with an actual attack.
Not sure on learning rate for crescent kick, but it may be possible to improve at the disarm skill by crescent kicking mobs with weapons. Not sure on that. If so, then you might be able to "double dip" and practice crescent and disarm at the same time.

The assassins I've made to play around with darts never showed me anything that told me it was worth it. And I can't recall ever having them used on me in the past 12 years or whatever it's been.
Sleep - Looks like maybe a sort of slow... couldn't really tell a difference though. Maybe useful for assassination somehow?
Confusion - My guess would be extra lag like a muddle, but never seen any conclusive evidence.
Acid - Some negligible amount of damage on tick. Maybe some minor acid vuln? Never been able to determine a difference, but haven't tested the vuln theory enough to be sure.
Mostly, darting someone pretty much always leads to them running away. I'll throw a dart in on those rare occasions where I choose to (fairly rare) and successfully (uncommon) strangle , but otherwise it's not worth alerting them for a skill that fails quite a bit and doesn't do much of anything obviously helpful.
Like many skills, poison darts seems like something you need an OOC buddy (and maybe lots of test runs) to really evaluate. That said, I haven't played all that many assassins (and none at all recently), and assassins are plenty good without poison darts anyway. Having poison darts be mostly a waste of a practice or two doesn't bother me.

Basically slow.

Do you remember when Entropy had confuse as a power? Same thing.
>Acid - Some negligible amount of damage on tick. Maybe some >minor acid vuln? Never been able to determine a difference, >but haven't tested the vuln theory enough to be sure.
It's just damage.
>Mostly, darting someone pretty much always leads to them >running away.
This is true and is one of the few real limitations of the skill.
I'd point out:
- Sometimes you've got an enemy that you really can't beat in a straight up fight. Something like slow poison darts can be pretty useful there. If that means they just run off, sometimes (e.g. cabal raids) that's good enough.
- Confusion darts are situationally good, but when they're good, they're really good.
- You can use these things on NPCs too, you know.

29382, I used darts a fair bit with one assassin

The acid was handy because it did -str as well as damage. If the guy knows you are there already, and isn't running, you might as well use it.
Also, my impression was that confusion darts made people's active skills fire on a random target, even if it isn't normally a targetable skill. e.g. They try to disarm you, but get a "they aren't wielding a weapon" message because the disarm targets a mob in the room instead. Having said that, I've never confirmed that this suspicion is definitely correct.
Think maybe the droopy eyelids one is a slow effect. Again, unconfirmed.
