27467, Lyceum, vouching - why?
Posted by NMTW on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
It's pretty annoying, because you need either a herald or an Imm (sometimes there aren't either), and it has a timer on it. Couldn't you just let everyone in?

I really have no problem with the current system.
I'm sure there's stuff in there that people need to read, but it can't possibly be so important that you can't show a little patience.

You could, but then your chances of being bashed while reading something would increase drastically as well.

27469, Possible solution:

Have the equivalent of the inn-guards in the Lyceum (really mean statues that come to life to attack troublemakers or something).

27470, Eh;

The Lyceum is meant to be safer than the Inn, yet, less useable as a place to hide from PK. Your idea preserves the first but makes the second worse.

27471, Agressor penalties?
Posted by Kadsuane on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Blank damage reduction to people fighting in the lyceum as long as they are not the agressor.
Still possible to die so its not like you can just hide in there.. but reduces the chance of getting two round bashed cause you were reading something in their scroll back.

27472, Perhaps reasonable idea.

Would it be possible to add a prog to say...the librarian outside, along the following lines?
1) Sayto responses involving Lyceum, or being vouched.
2a) If there is a Herald on, librarian responds with something along the lines of "Please find a Herald to be vouched" 2b) If there is no Herald on, librarian comments that given a lack of other options, he/she'll vouch for you if you want.
3) Player responds that they would like to be vouched for the Lyceum, and receives lag equal to vouching someone.
It seems like that wouldn't change the PK dynamic, nor would it remove Heralds from the process *IF* there's any Heralds about. The only thing I could see would be that if there aren't any Heralds, random bash-down guy could get in via the librarian as well. However, there aren't any Heralds anyways, so it doesn't seem odd that it'd be less well looked after. Would-be bash-guy still has a lot of lag on them too, so there's a shot at spotting him. Could feasably have the librarian "warn" people when the librarian vouches them, that the player's somewhat "on their own" in there.

27473, Regarding 2b)...

The librarian could simply only admit one person at a time, which is what Heralds (should) typically do anyway.

27474, I don't see where you're coming from at all...
Posted by NMTW on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Why is 'hiding from PK' in the Lyceum in this new system different from 'hiding from PK' in the Inn of the Eternal Star? I fail to see how adding the equivalent of inn guards to the lyceum would substantially alter the dynamic...
Why does the Lyceum need to be safer than the Inn? Surely they could both be just as safe, and open-access without any harm being done.

Heralds are charged by their Immortal patrons with the humble protection of knowledge and the pursuers of that knowledge. It's the core of the cabal. That's why the Lyceum is designed to be one of the safest places in Thera; it's like a bomb-proof museum vault for knowledge, that only Heralds and vouched-for friends of knowledge may have access to. The vouching system just makes sense for the cabal's mythos.

27477, Yes but WHY does it need to be safe?
Posted by NMTW on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
If you're comparing the two systems- how it is now vs how it might be wi the equivalent of inn guardians, you might ask the question why it needs to stay as it is now.
If as seems logical, the answer is "because then people would be discouraged from learning about Thera's lore", I think the hassle of asking (possibly with conflict to your RP), praying, waiting, getting kicked, going through the whole bull$hit again is much more damaging than the outside chance that someone might assemble a gang squad and get you while you're reading. It's not like it's a massively common occurrence as things stand with people chilling out at the inn.

27478, RE: Yes but WHY does it need to be safe?

Getting into the world's most well-protected bank vaults is pretty difficult too, for a good reason.
It just makes sense for the design of the area and the cabal that you have to jump some hoops to gain access to the Lyceum. Heralds believe what's contained within the Lyceum is the most valuable treasure on the face of Thera. Outsiders are lucky to see it at all.
Your real problem here is that there are rarely any Heralds around to vouch. So roll a Herald.

27479, Just pray "Vouch me please"
Posted by Cerunnir on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
It works 95% of the time, aslong as there is an imm about and paying attention.

28369, This is what I usually do as well
Posted by SmileyFace on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Imms that are on have always been generous and vouched me when I needed it, when one was on.
If you do need to go the automatic route, perhaps just diminish the duration of time you can spend in the Lyceum and maybe a 24 hour game time penalty where you can't re-enter the Lyceum.
