26030, Ranger Outlanders and ridiculous ambushes.
Posted by Semaphore on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
The damage on an onslaught edged ambush with good gear is too much given that the only counter to it is to not be hit by it. If that is survived, the following melee round is likely to kill. It would be nice if there was an edge such as the one that helps against backstab. Ambush is used a lot more and with greater effect than backstab, so I think an anti ambush edge would be in order. It one shots heroes with under 700 hp.
Also, outlanders being able to run around with impunity thanks to camo, and whatever ability enables them to find you wherever you are is crazy. It doesn't seem like they have to really worry about anyone but fellow rangers who are unlikely to oppose them. For what it's worth, I've been multi-naked killed by outlanders far more than any other cabal. It seems to be overpowered and attracting the dregs of cf.

TRACK
It's a skill that lets rangers see which direction you passed through a wilderness (non-water, except in the case of animists) room.
Basically a skilled ranger will learn your patterns over time. Then they will wait in ambush.
Therefore the best defenses are: a) take wierd routes where you don't leave tracks in places they check (as they have to actively check) b) get the "twitchy" edge. (Not guaranteed to help, but in practice very very useful.) c) do stuff to avoid leaving tracks at all.

I'm not sure people make as much use of track as they could/should.
Honestly, if we're talking not at hero, they'll look for you where you're likely to be:
1. ranking, 2. spamming skills, 3. getting gold, 4. getting preps, 5. raiding or retrieving.
Barring those, they'll often typically look in areas where they'd actually have a shot at killing you, i.e. areas that are full of wilderness terrain.

26044, Keep asking that same person...

You were asking today, she was preoccupied with a work call while attempting to explore a place.
I'd be more than happy to help you out IC.
1/2 the stuff I was throwing at you was litterly off the top of my head, and if I throw my attention to it I'm sure I can show you a few tricks

26040, Obviously you've never seen my ambushes.

I can kill innocent kobolds with only 2 or 3 ambush - flee - ambush!

-As Outlander, you step out of camo whenever you start moving (rangers excluded, but they have camo as class ability). The camo is also slow, with a round of lag (opposed to ranger fast camo that works as quickly as hide). -If a fellow ranger opposes your Outlander, the situation is nasty, as both of you are better off in the wilds. The ranger can see you in camo, but you can't see him. -The ability to find you wherever you are is called player skill and not every Outlander has it. For rangers in particular, this is done by running through many wilderness area in the game looking actively for prey (they have high mobility due to pathfinding). -As for dregs of CF, all cabals have been whined about at some point.

So outlander rangers can't see uncabaled rangers camoflaged?

26035, Wrong. Dur just didn't read. nt

26048, Rangers see rangers.

But being an Outlander has nothing to do with that. Rangers have a CLASS ability to camo and see camoed (and hidden in wilderness, but not civilized) people. However, Outlanders, including rangers, don't have a CABAL ability to see camoed people that are not in their own cabal (all Outlanders can see a camoed Outlander).
I don't see how being an Outlander is a factor, unless you are playing dwarf, duergar, minotaur, orc, conjurer, necromancer, anti-paladin, paladin, Scion, Imperial, Tribunal or some other enemy of Outlanders that they pretty much attack on sight. Personally, tactics wise, I don't see how being an Outlander is important in your rant about rangers.

The outlander power is chameleon. Not camo. Rangers camo. Outlanders CHAM. That is the difference.

26258, The difference
Posted by DurNominator on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
-Chameleon is slow, taking about 1 combat round while camo is fast (providing that the ranger has the wilderness hours). -Chameleon costs mana while camouflage is free. -Chameleon works in in some rooms camo might not (desert, conglaciation).
The end result of both, however, is a camouflaged individual.

For what its worth, I didn't look at you prior to the ambush in question. After the fact, I knew you had nothing. And yeah, I feel kinda guilty about it because you obviously seem like a new"ish" player. so, I will toss you some advice which you can take or ignore.
First: No one should ever kill you _truly_ naked. When you die you can go to your guild and make use of the "Outfit" command. This will give you some stuff to get started on your path to regearing.
Second: If ambush is your bane, avoid the wilds..which you have a class that is completely capable of doing.
Third: You are playing one of the best classes for exploration. Take advantage of it, Learn what gear you can get easily and quickly. You should be looking for things to increase your health mainly.
Fourth: Make friends, and ask them questions. Most people (fortress types etc) would be more than willing to help you out/show you things.
