25982, Prompt token addition proposal: Visibility Status
Posted by Vorek on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Concept:
A new token(variable which contains info about various things such as %h for current hitpoints) available for use in the prompt.

I see this new token holding information about the player's current visibility status: Visible, Hidden, Invisible, Camo'd, or Duo'd (or any other visibility status of which my newbness is not aware of)

I see this akin to the tokens that are currently available to help certain other classes such as current Repertoire and current terrain.

Reasons to NOT impliment this new token:
- Hide is not always a success
- Lots of visibility affects can already be seen through use of 'aff'

Rebuttals:
- Hide is EXTREMELY easy to get to 100% through spamming, anyone failing from lack of skill is merely lacking the desire to not fail
- Hide can sometimes fail for reasons other than lack of skill, but as far as the reasons I'm aware of, they are QUITE obvious to the player, such as being warned that you cannot hide due to the fact that you're glowing.
- Many players rely quite heavily on stealth which can sometimes be broken from quite mundane tasks such as drinking etc and at times it can be quite hard to keep track of without just senseless spamming of hide (or whatever the skill in question is). I believe information about these players' visibility is just as important to them as a bard's repertoire or a ranger/druid's current terrain. Therefore, this info should be just as easily accessed (IE: no need for using 'aff' to know this)

Final notes:
Yes, I know that players can create trigger-sets to keep track of this sort of information using a client. I have already done this for myself, however I feel like this is something that should be accessible to players who lack scripting/triggering knowledge, or the proper client to do so. Plus, it would be nice to not need as many triggers!

Feel free to contact me to discuss the matter if you'd like.

There are other reasons when hide can fail that aren't 0% chance to succeed and aren't necessarily obvious.

I don't love the version of this that gives you knowledge of failures, and the version that wouldn't is more work than I'd ever personally want to put into this.

Well damn, Daevryn.

All this does is make me wonder where these failures you speak of come from!

I guess it would be up to the IMPs, whether or not actually KNOWING you're hidden or w/e would be a significant change in balance, or just convinience.

We shall see!

One example: being too big (size-wise) to hide well.

That's not 100% failure, but it is some failure.

Maybe for skill based ones (like hide and camo) it would only be available to you if you have it at 100%? And if for some strange reason something lowers your skill (not sure if this is possible) then it would no longer ba available for that skill. Invis and I'm assuming duo wouldn't need that though because it seems obvious when they work or not.

Overall I kinda like having the option, even though I'm not sure if I'd use it, but I guess I won't know until its available.

some shoppies can see hidden, like many in galadon i think, but most can't. Learn your shoppies! With camo, you can send a tell and stay hidden, so if real worried you can just ask a friend or mess with a random person and see if they reply who is this.

but yeah, for game "fun" hide and camo are supposed to have some risk and uncertainty - but barring strange situations, at 100% you can't count on being hidden when hiding. Just set up a highlight for when you step out of cover or out of shadows!
