2533, "enchanter" class, revisited
Posted by Ululari on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
The enchanter or alchemist class -- basically, something like a transmuter but for inanimate objects rather than animate creatures -- has been proposed a number of times, and shot down a number of times, for good reasons.
Here's an idea on how to make the class playable:
Give them abilities to enchant potions, weapons and armor, etc. but give the resulting objects durations. If permanent effects are included at all, make them have some kind of serious cost (level loss, or con loss or some such). Perhaps also give them some ability to create some simple objects.
Give objects hit points and various kinds of defenses, and redesign object destroying skills to take this into account -- give enchanters the ability to repair this damage and to enhance these defenses. Maybe introduce some specialized shoppies who can repair specific classes of objects.
For more powerful effects (for example: sharpen: significant +dam roll on edged weapons), make the effect wear off at an accellerated rate when not being carried by the enchanter, and even faster when not in the same room as the enchanter. Or, perhaps have the effect degrade in strength with time when not carried/not in same room as enchanter.
Ok, this is a lot of work, and would probably take a couple years to implement, but I think it could be made playable.

33441, Not enough info...

I like the idea of adding/revamping classes because it keeps the game fresh which helps draw new players and retain old ones, but, there is not nearly enough here for an entire class. What would an enchanter's spell list look like?

1) I'd rather cleanly balance whats there now than add new classes. 2) This would be like a trap thief. Sound good in theory but not worth playing in reality.
Tbh this sounds like, "We should add a class that can buff my chars." No one would want to play this.

2536, No, this would suck...because

You would have these people all over the place and make adamantite bracers 5/5 +5 str. It would kind of lose the purpose of having original gear. It owuld make a lot of people hit insanely hard for like 10 game days or whatever. Not cool.

Yeah, it would make a fight between a non-battle warrior and a rager fair. :P

Where did you get that idea?
Let's say it's possible for the enchanter to make +5 hit, +5 dmg, +5 str bracers. Enchanting has limits, so enchanter can probably only crank out one such piece of equipment every few hours. And there's probably a limit on how many enchantments the enchanter can have active at one time.
And then when the enchanter hands over the goods to his group mate, it starts degrading by 1pt dmg, 1pt hit, 1pt str every 2-3 game hours. Or, if person isn't in same room as enchanter every game hour.
Ok, maybe that still sucks.
