24826, Lets talk about alignment changes
Posted by Dervish on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
So some decent part of CF RP based on the ones trying to change the alignment of others. Or at least they should try. Imperials, Acolytes and so on.
But why its always a punishment, meaning the person always loses his/her spells/voice and so on?
I think this prevents some players to RP their lifepath change. For example I certainly can see one of my chars changing his align.

I think you're wrong. My opinion is that you want it to be cakewalk-easy, and not have to pay any price. Nobody goes from good to evil at the flip of a switch or vice versa, and there is a price to pay. Take the life of a healer who was empowered by Baerinika, who then turns evil? Where does his power come from now? It sure isn't going to be Baerinika.
From a game balance standpoint, we've pushed that from the empowered to across the board. So we don't end up with a bunch of storm giant battle rager warriors using the black box so they can be evil and not have to worry about anything.

Well, as for the healer I agree.
But a fresh example, that ranger Rourqwet or something like this. Why he lost his powers? Or bard Proleteria who lost her voice.
And no, I dont want it to be cakewalk-easy or something like this. Moreeven I dont plan to do this myself (though it can be possible), but I see that other lost their spells/voices and just wish to ask 'why?'.
If it would result in many storm ragers going evil, I kinda agree. But its better to make cloud btw. But I dont think so, I think it will be just rare examples and if it RP-ed well and is not resulted in power loss, I think everyone would benefit from such.

As I already posted...From a game balance standpoint, we've pushed that from the empowered to across the board.

If there is no repercussion for making the change, it's just another bit to flip for the min/max crew that requires no RP enforcement.

In addition to what Zulg already said, animists can't be evil.
Also: the bit about lots of neutral and evil storm giant warriors isn't speculation. It's what we used to have when alignment changing was painless.

24846, So I guess no matter how hard I try I wont get that evil elf assassin huh?
Posted by AceBushido on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
elf assassin PERIOD would be so much more pimp than drow assassin.
that or wood-elf thief, but to a lesser degree

What you could do, is allow people to choose it from character creation. That would prevent people from initially picking a good/neutral combo, then just roleplaying it terribly. This way you'd have to role-play "evil traitor to my race" from the get-go. Limit the amount of "race traitors" like you do minotaurs. Then give them a bunch of nasty drawbacks that never go away. Some ideas:
All good-aligned healers refuse to heal them, not just the current ones like Darsylon, Akan, etc.
All good-aligned mobs (of a certain rank, relative to the character's rank) are aggro to that character. This will make it a pain to rank.
All mobs of the same race as the character become aggro (just in case they're not included in the "good-aligned" category above, e.g. dwarves).
Pick up a vuln_positive flag (just like currently happens).
All good-aligned merchants refuse to sell to that character.
Automatic life-ling title, e.g. "Traitor to the Light", just so the character can't be a "stealth evil".
Encourage the Fortress cabal to target these characters before normal run-of-the-mill evils, similar to how Empire treats Anathemas.
Maybe add 100xp to their default xp penalty. Just because.

Sounds like an awful lot of work for the very few who would use it. It's not something that should be "popular", and it should require some level of intervention for this life-altering change.
You also focus on good -> evil, when there is also neutral -> evil, evil -> good.

True. Wasn't necessarily proposing you do all that stuff. Just throwing it out there as a way to make "evil storm giant" at least partially balanced.
>You also focus on good -> evil, when there is also neutral -> >evil, evil -> good.
Good point. Not sure what I'd do for those. Take away request, for one, based on the idea that "random mob" isn't necessarily going to "believe" that Joe Duergar is actually now good-aligned. You could maybe have them be unable to wear/wield good-only gear, despite being good-aligned.

24832, Racial alignment is a key part of balance.
Posted by Theerkla on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Take away all racial benefits and inherents, and I'm okay on lightening up on align changes. I bet you if you go over the list of the last 10 characters to try for an align change and at least seven of them are going to be races that are forced into an alignment.

24831, I agree to 100% BUT...
Posted by Amberion on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
... It shouldn't be "easy". There should be some other sort of penalty.
For example, make those who shift alignment to good or evil vuln to the oposit? Or something like that, there SHOULD be a punishment, for maybe a set number of hours? Maybe 100 hours of the chars life? 50? But it shouldn't be as severe as it is in my opinion.

24845, Wallpaper? What's that got to do with anything?
Posted by Straklaw on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Honestly, it's all about the hats. Just switch the hat, switch alignments!
...actually, I really kinda want a hat vendor now, just to be able to mock that comment, hehe.
