A microblog of sorts where you can tell people what you're doing, thinking, etc in 140 characters or less.
It is useful because people you know can update what is going on in their life without you having to actually talk to them or read their lame-ass blog. This is great, because I want to get most of my interactions with people I don't like to hang around done quickly.
Also, famous people use Twitter. John Cleese, Greg Grunberg, Ashton Kutcher, David Lynch, Luke Wilson, Rainn Wilson, others.
Some examples from mine:
So, yesterday was spring forward. All the clocks in my place are finally the correct time instead of an hour ahead.
12:38 PM Mar 9th from txt
It's still a peaceful day. Katie and I have been engaged for a week today.
3:20 PM Feb 21st from web
Thought this dude in the grocery store parking lot was riding a Segway... turns out he's just a tall guy pushing a small cart.
8:19 PM Feb 10th from web

This is exactly why I loathe twitter for the most part. I guess it makes me officially old but holy crap there's nothing I'm less interested in than a play-by-play of even my closest friends' boring lives. Twitter is useful for some things (rapid updates on CF downtime seems useful) and can be entertaining in the right hands, but there isn't a person on earth who I want to read "just microwaved a burrito lol" about.
