23678, Idea flaws vs faster leveling
Posted by Panir on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Hey,
With all the complaining about how long it takes to rank up, how about implementing something with flaws. IE for every flaw chosen it reduces your xp penalty (or in the case of having a human flips it negative) by like 100xp at lvl 1 per flaw.
This would allow people to rank their humans up really fast, however they would be cowardly/sickly/stumbly weaklings who puke when they teleport? but in all seriousness how about giving some incentive for taking a flaw? I realize there is a miniscule edge point bonus, but I think that this method would make flaws seem more "attractive"

The problem with your idea is that it assumes (incorrectly) that flaws are meant to be attractive.

oh I realize that daev, I was just thinking something to offset steep xp penalties, for example a fire giant that is weaker than the norm costing less to rank than a full toughy fire giant. etc.

The thing is, a high XP penalty is as least as much about what your PK range looks like as it is about how fast you level. You'd need a pretty severe flaw of the kind people almost never take (e.g., you're a d-elf necromancer with No Undead) for me to even think about tinkering with that.

Ahh,
I know xp penalties affect pk ranges. I just figured that most flaws well, were pretty bad. at least the ones I had looked at. Also, I think it would make for some interesting flame posts
"yeah! well my mostly retarded, sickly, cowardly fire giant took out your maran!"

23695, Reminds me of Jinrohs dwarf that never practiced anything...

I think he had like 7 PKs? Or 2? I don't know, either is pretty remarkable. And his guards brought down a lot of criminals. That was a neat character.
Come to think of it, he always made neat characters. It's a bummer we lost him.

I think certain players, and some (but not all) imms just pissed him off to the point where he wasn't going to deal with it anymore. He and I were what I'd consider to be "good" internet friends... talked for years and years and even spoke in person a couple times. That said, he is hard headed and opinionated at times, which does not mix well with hard headed and opinionated staff members. That, plus personal stuff with his business and his brother made him hang up CF for good. He doesn't even get on AIM anymore. He moved to Wyoming too... and discovered women, work and the outdoors - which will limit the amount of time anyone spends on CF.

You could just make the edge/flaw modify the amount of xp that character gains from a given kill.
So at a particular rank, he'd still have the same total xp and PK range as a character without the edge/flaw. But he would have gotten there with fewer kills.

23681, but then its not a FLAW its a trade. nt

Flaws are for purely RP purposes. You are suppose to get little to no benefit from them. As it is today, I belive you do get a small amount edges points for picking a flaw.

23682, Not to all flaws, but you get it for some. n/t
