23380, Selling to Evil Shopkeepers as a Fortress Member

What are your thoughts on this? I could think of a decent excuse, but wouldn't want to be penalized for it if I'm wrong.

Say you get in a bunch of equ and go to sell it in Udgaard. Do you think this is acceptable, or not?

Similarly, selling evil items to shopkeepers?

My take on it is that it's a nonviolent way to keep your enemies busy, a way to fund the members of the Fortress, and a way to gather the gold that could otherwise fund dark purposes.

There's not really any reason for it. There are always goodie or neutral shoppies that will buy what you're selling.

The only exception to this is when it's an emergency. If you're about to die, and the only healer around happens to be evil, by all means do what you gotta do.

But if I were leading the Fort, I'd slap you if I saw you regularly supporting Udgaard's economy, for example. And realistically, there are usually better shoppies that are non-evil. Darsylon, for example, pays pretty well and they're hardly ever out of money.

As far as selling evil items, that's just a simple No. Especially if you're a Maran. The job of a Fortie is to destroy evil in ALL it's forms. Do that by either having a paladin cleanse it, or by saccing it. Those are pretty much the only two option open to you.

But I suppose those could change depending on current Fort leadership.
23402, Seriously though....

I never let an evil healer heal my Maran. That's getting evil prayer put on you - something than worse than death for a Maran.
23381, Let me ask you this

Would you sell something to Ahtieli?
23382, Well then let me ask you THIS:

What if I told you I could beat any offer Ahtieli gave you by 50%?
23383, Even so, Maran should still not sell to you nt

And I think I agree with them. It did make me think one more thing, though.

If your job is to destroy evil and you best an evil foe, why would you give them all their stuff back? Aren't you equipping them for their future fight against you?

This is part of the reason that I think selling their stuff is a good idea, as it keeps them out of your hair. However, I think selling their stuff to evil shopkeepers won't happen any more.
23400, Well..

You can justify that a few different ways.

#1, you aren't actually giving anything back to them. You're just not taking it in the first place.

#2, you're trying to show him mercy and selflessness in the hopes that it might open his eyes to another way of life (ie, convince him to seek retribution)

#3, by destroying his clothes, you give the impression that you consider yourself weaker and thus need to give yourself an advantage. that runs counter to the Fort mission of "providing hope", etc.

Really, that's one of those things that you can make the decision either way, and no one will ever question you on it. So ultimately, it isn't an RP choice, but a player choice. Do you really want to make this game more frustrating and less fun for that player? 99% of the time, the answer to that should be a resounding "No".
23401, If I sell to the evil shop keeper...

I am encouraging free enterprise, and providing that guy a way to make an honest living.

OOOOH what do you think of that Mr. JAVApants.

:)
23403, Well, he's EEEEEVIL
Posted by Java on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
You don't want him to make an honest living. You want him to be dead.
23404, I can't argue that...

But that's one of those things I just think is so minor that doesn't have any affect on anything but to inconvenience me. (in reality, not in fantasy)

So... meh... I have bigger fish to fry.
