22313, Time for a helpful thief suggestion

I know it's been mentioned a few times about a change for the thief class...how about something like this?

>

I know it's not nearly done out, but the basic premise is there - think of it like WoW talent trees (I know I might get run out for saying this but they did *some* things right which could be used).

  • You can pick and choose what you want - each skill's "value" is either static (everything is worth a point and thieves get a point every 2-3 levels) or variable amounts (aka what its like now and in the diagram).
  • Paths aren't defined by guild, but each guild can teach different skills. This would allow for more custom skills in different guilds, including special guilds later on - some basic paths (like combat) would be taught by every guild (kind of like Balator classroom teacher). This would also allow for skills only taught by those enrolled in that guild.
  • Each skill can have prerequisites, which is either a defined level (no acrobatics pre-30) or a set of skill requirements (you need directional trap to learn burst trap).
  • In the diagram above, I could have knock-out trap in any form (directional/burst/physical) for example without learning damage or glowing trap.

This would allow a lot more customization of the class and fix the problem of "why can't I learn shield block if I don't know traps?". If you wanted a balls-out combat madman without any defensive abilities, you could do that (even make hide/sneak/steal point skills that you might not take)...or you could be totally defensive (shield block, parry, LoA, acrobatics, etc). I hardly think that allowing this would put thieves above the mark in comparison to other classes.

I know there's a lot that's not in the diagram and that it's hardly anywhere near being finished, but what do you think of the idea?

Really thought I had a good idea here to fix thieves, no Imm loving/flames/comments?

One of the best things that can happen with a post here is that the Imms don't dog it. In fact, they might even be mulling it over, seriously.

In actuality, if your plan ever works it'll have gone through their own "uniquification" process, and probably won't look exactly the same.

But good stuff dude.
22352, Essentially, from my point of view:

I've had my own idea in mind of what I'd like to eventually do with thieves for a couple of years. Not that it'll necessarily end up being that, depending on who works on them, but I have a rough plan if I were to do it, I've talked about it with some of the other imms and tried to refine it, etc.

It's not exactly what you've suggested, but there are some decent similarities, so... I think your idea is roughly on the right track.
22323, Having recently played Kreo I REALLY like this idea.

No idea how it would pan out though. But the thought of it is really cool, might make thieves a bit more viable.

I'll try to think of some stuff as well about things that could be done for thieves based on my experiences with Kreo, and fighting different thieves.
22319, I am impressed!

Someone used a flowchart in CF!

I may look at the rest of the post when I recover. ;)

try that. itll let you create your own talent tree, which will look much better than the above.

I get what you're sayin.
