20528, About giants and weapons spec
Posted by Timeshifter on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I was wondering what the forum's views are on giants with the spear and dagger spec. Being able to cripple foes and bring them down to your dex seems like a very tempting thing. Going with maces, and dagger, or maces and spears instead of the age old polearm was interesting to me atleast. I am sure it has been done before, its just I've never fought anyone with them.
Axes and maces are a good first spec. Boneshatter is great, and whirl is good enough with axes. Just don't know if daggers would be a good choice even if I went with "The Sisters" legacy. Spears on the other hands, I don't have to worry about "The Sisters" since its not even an option. I would be able to choose another legacy. If you have any useful insight it would be appreciated.

What people have already said covers the basics, I just want to emphasize a few thing.
Playing a dexy-spec like dagger is a terrible idea for a giant. Flail is just about as bad, honestly. Bludgeon will rock, but the rest sucks. Seriously - you'll have a hard time entwining anyone but other giants, and will miss your lashing a lot. don't do it.
Go mace spear if you want to mess with dex, throw a poisoning weap in there if you just need that little bit more -str. Axe/Mace is fun, but definitely niche.
Don't underestimate polearm. Yeah, you won't hurt their dex, but you'll be more "defensive" than you would as a spear spec.

20547, Polearms are not weaksauce offensively:

You can kill with a polearm. You can actually kill quite effectively with a polearm as a warrior. I seriously recommend it for a giant charaacter since I have seen it be quite effective on non-giants.
Just remember you are best at fighting running battles. Do not be afraid to flee and re-engage with another charge if your first missed or did diddly for damage.
Only issue I would have with a giant polearm spec would be the damnable amount of time it would take to perfect certain essential skills: charge set, charge, distance. Those three are biggies and take some time. Distance being the quickest.
Also take the slice bleeding edge it is very useful and I know this is going to sound bizarre but use the yellow roots to get larger. It helps a polearm spec to be as large as possible, especially for chopping.

If you want to be a maladicting giant, mace is a very good choice. Boneshatter is probably the heaviest one-shot maladicting skill out there, and you'll also be able to make good use of other mace skills such as drum.
If I was to make one, I'd go with mace/spear from a powerplayer perspective, with axe/spear as a very close second (others will proably disagree with me here). Daggers aren't good due to the horrendous success rate you can expect with your maladictory skills. You'll also have the problem of getting owned badly in melee since you will neither be dodging nor parrying decently.
Just be careful with them bards.

I played Ghyrein, sp? I was cloud giant tribunal mace/dagger.
I kind of took dagger just to be silly, and see if it really was worth doing. Stab and Underhand was pretty cool, but #### me sideways if I could ever do much of anything else. This was pre-dex changes also, but cloud dagger is just a joke. It's like a svirf spamming bash without enlarge. Sure, you can do it, hell, you might even land once in a while, but you might as put Kick Me on your ass and walk down eastern road.
Spear/Staff might be an option, but if it were, IMHO it would be RP based option, not how can I be strong, option. Personally, I think giants should go full out offense, but I don't above par warriors, either.

20533, This made me laugh and cry alittle...

My first character was a Svirf warrior, and I did try and bash everything up until some fire giant just started laughing at me and asked why I kept running into his knee.

All dagger skills except underhand is dexterity based when it come to success rate. From what i've heard of giant dagger specs, its just plain ol'not a good idea. You are going to miss the skills a lot, and take a blow in return.
If your going for maledict dex on a giant perhaps the best bets are mace + spear. Axe is also a good second choise, but two such offensive specs dont go all to well together. You will end up using only one of them 90% of the time.

I would say your choice for a second spec should be driven by the fights you feel you can't handle adequately with your first spec. That'll be a little different for everyone's playstyle.
