So on that 'other' board we talked about making deathblow like critical. then make critical a little bit different. Here is the idea I came up with.
Id like to see critical hit "weaken" the defenses of the mage they hit. Maybe everyone 1 in 5 strikes it would reduce the timer of say shields, or enlivens etc. There would be a distinct message.
As rager53423 attacks a weakness in your shields you notice them begin to weaken. Maybe make it lose one fourth of its timer so from 8 hours to maybe 6 or something.

I think that would be more tactically interesting to use, or fight against than just lowered duration on protections.
