19149, Curiosity with mob "traps" versus PWK death
Posted by Torak on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I've always wondered about this since I remember asking an Immortal in-game (think it was Z) after my fire giant got pwk'd by a certain Death Knight despite having divine saves for spell and mental.
Is there some places that this happens no matter what and is just a flat roll of the dice, or are there measures you can take to survive these type of things such as saves (spell, mental, paralysis?) or even things like your racial intelligence (fire giant versus a drow). Is the rumor true that you can't be PWK'd if you're below a certain percentage of health?
Reason I ask is mostly since I know Cabdru had some luck with this fighting a specific Inferno mob to get something solo, and it can royally ruin your day if your group is in an area-explore (especially Inferno groups) and one of your teammates dies in this fashion even if you know it's coming. Be nice to have some way to prepare for these things besides "alright let's see if you die walking in".
Same question also for super-secret explore mobs that can kill you instantly in combat - figuring this is the same mechanic.
Thanks, always wondered about this.

In the case of all the examples you're mentioning here, the same things that help with PC necromancer PWK (e.g., good saves) help as much here.
(Plus, in the case of the mobs, only giving them one shot at it obviously helps. That is, you never flee/reinitiate.)
Divine saves aren't a get out of jail free card. More saves doesn't necessarily stop helping you at that or any other point, especially if your mental stats are ass.

So stats do play a part....what about save vs spell versus mental? Is it true about the lower percentage of health?

It's not a secret that intelligence and wisdom have a part to play in most saving throws. This should be mentioned multiple times in the helpfiles. :)

19160, Actually, I can't find anything.

Out of curiousity, I looked. It's not mentioned in saving throws, or in the stats helpfile...maybe update for some newbie love?

...you'd answer my question about the health percentage, or three times a charm for not answering ;)

19162, A diff mob

So would it be safe to assume that some mob in the past that assassinates also is subject to saving throws and the certain health theory is buggy or for that specific skill health plays a major factor?

The assassinate skill doesn't generally involve a saving throw. That'd be a different story altogether.

The crowd says in unison 'That'd be a different story.'

19152, Resist mental/resist negative? nt

19154, Well, in that example...

I didn't have resist negative but I had divine saves vs mental (love those braces) and used a resist mental prep - didn't seem to make a difference. Also had aura of despair if that matters.
Could have been an epic failure roll (1) though. I think there's more ways to this
