18920, Vaguely on the topic of Sleek
Posted by Drag0nSt0rm on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Could atleast some of the barrier spots be reviewed in some way?
I can think of a few nearly impossible to get, ever, sources for certain combos.

A few quick vague examples
Mobs that are immune to blunt - Woe is the Necro/ram shifter
Huge Huge Huge mobs that have the key to where your barrier is - Woe is the muter, and sometimes necro
Mobs in the way of your barrier aren't just hasted, they are aggro to all levels and dent! OR Worse! - Woe is anyone but a muter or shapeshifter

While I'm not saying FOUL, these are LAME,
I would simply say remove these situations where its simply tempting to delete and reroll praying your barrier source isn't nearly impossible to get even with the perfect set at hero...
And I would certainly say there are non-sleek barrier sources yes, but on the whole these are very rare, and horded constantly due to their rarity, and largely more difficult to get than alot of the mid-difficulty sleek-blacks, which are vastly better.

But seriously mobs that have haste and dent in a norecall area?
Or being a necro and dealing with immune blunt?

I'm not saying move them, or pussify the mob,
But mages everywhere would be happy if said mobs weren't immune blunt
and other said mobs didn't dent and destroy gear or atleast stopped being aggro at a certain point.

Thank you for reading over this? Please give it some serious thought.
18951, How about something like...

An expensive edge or a magey quest to reshuffle your sleeks once per character, perhaps available after a certain number of character hours logged.

That sounds reasonable to me, but what do I know? Good, bad?
19031, No one had any thoughts on this at all?
Posted by Nightshade on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I thought this idea had some merit as a good compromise. I hate the sound of silence, someone hold me. :(
19033, It's okay

>I thought this idea had some merit as a good compromise. I

It's not a bad idea, but it doesn't really solve anything. It might help someone who finds their barrier but it's in a bad spot, but if you couldn't find your barrier, would you really want to take this edge in the vague hope that your wands will end up in a spot you can find, bearing i mind that you'll have to re-find all the wands you knew about? Just doesn't seem very desirable.
18937, if sleeks tough, use limited abs sources

once you get a couple and know where they come from you can be fine. especially if your so anal retentive you feel you ALWAYS need it instead of just being a little pickier in your battles and more hit and run with your tactics.

I'd rather have an easy aura than an easy barrier, personally. It's nice to have that kind of long-lasting protection around most of the time. Barrier? That's for when I know I'm about to do something stupid.

I need perma barrier then :-/

No wonder you like empowerment classes so much! :o

Grasshopper, you must choose your moments of stupidity wisely, lest you hear the sound of one hand clapping!
18950, I can clap with one hand.
Posted by Scrimbul on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I dunno how that's relevant here though or what it says about me.
18949, Tough isn't the problem
Posted by Drag0nSt0rm on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Stupid hard, is the problem.
The lich Xolintar is >TOUGH< but you know what? He isn't that bad, I kill him for gear at hero.

Mobs that dent. I Just .. don't.. Fight these. Ever. Because dent is a stupid skill to give something with 20000 hp, and no sense of tactics, so if the RNG feels like making you naked the mob can just spam your gear right off your ass.

Not to mention IMMUNE blunt abs mobs. Would Cabdru have gotten any decent pile of souls if his barrier had been nearly impossible to get? No, likely not.
I'm looking for some vague sense of evenness, I didn't say Oooh my barrier is tough make it easy Waaaah.
I said, my barrier is ####ing gay, everything is immune and spams dent. I can't talk people into helping me get it.. why? CAUSE THE MOBS SPAM DENT FFS.
18921, Many sleek blacks are not intended to be gotten solo
Posted by Theerkla on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Feel free to do a search, it's been brought up more than once.
18922, That sounds more like
Posted by Drag0nSt0rm on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
We don't want to change the fact that some sleeks are stupid easy to get and some are nearly impossible to get simply because its a hassle
I'm not saying MOVE them because its hard,

I'm saying CAN these mobs NOT dent? *Seriously? What group will I convince to help me do that on a regular basis?*
Or those mobs not be completly immune to my melee?
18924, groups with a mongoose tanking for you?
Posted by Theerkla on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Sorry, there's plenty of groups you could arrange that aren't phased in the least by a mob with dent. There's plenty of groups you could gather that don't rely on blunt or physical damage. Or, since you have much more than just one sleek black spot, you could search for others and just ignore that one if it is too much a pain to get.
18926, Still doesn't make it ok.
Posted by elmeri_ on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Sure, a muter or an AP or even a shifter can probably rank to 30 fast, and reroll when he gets a bad set of sleeks. For a necro or invoker this is not an option. Still, I think it's an unfair luck of the draw that some sources are easy to pick up at mid 30 and some require 2-3 heros to get. I'm going on a limb here, but I would say that scoring an easy set of sleeks can be vital to an anti-paladins success, since having barrier at 36 really helps in farming those early charges.

Also, as far as I know, each character gets one set of designated sleeks. So unless I'm mistaken, some chars are just royally screwed (in comparison).
18927, Law of averages
Posted by Theerkla on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
You get more than one set of sources, and everyone will probably have at least one hard to get wand and at least one easy to get wand. If you find a hard to get wand, exploring for another is probably faster than deleting and rerolling.
18928, Can you or someone else confirm this from personal experience?
Posted by elmeri_ on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I for one have never heard of anyone having several sleek black sources. Furthermore, ranking a char to 30 doesn't take very many hours. For an ap it's harder since you need to work on skills. But a shifter or a muter all you need is to power up.
18929, In my experience, that isn't true.
Posted by GinGa on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I took the time in the last few months to try and really compile a proper wand list, mostly in preperation for the next big mage character I wanted to do (the first that was -required- by role to be a bit of a bad-ass). And it seems to be one character, one set of three.

What I can confirm, is that hard blacks are invariably paired with easier sienna/ambers. Although this depends on which mage class you are.

The anomaly is that with Hyzin, one of the sleek places I often passed to get a generic wand suddenly started working. It was literally 200 hours of the same sort of wand-checking path, and I knew there might be a wand there but didn't know if there was/what kind. I'd been checking it most of the characters life, with my little list of 'possibles' and although I had found a sleek/sienna with him already, this one suddenly started pumping out an alternate source of siennas. I tested it pretty thoroughly and figured it must be an age thing - but I don't know. I am however 100% sure I had two sienna sources with him, but whether it was a crazy bug or something I don't know.

I never found any blacks until recently :D, so I couldn't comment on them. The victory is mine, you wand hiding midgets*! Muhahahaha!

Yhorian

* - The reference to midgets is based on my belief that's the only way these wands can get there. The idea a mage pedantically hides it there only for it to disappear AGAIN is just silly.

This can actually have a bigger effect than you are making out. There are sets that are pathetically easy for certain classes while near undoable sets exist for those same classes. It can feasibly have as big an effect as oh say what forms a shifter gets, depending on what is being horded by whom concurrently.
18933, That alt sienna
Posted by Drag0nSt0rm on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Is no bug,
It was someones source who walked by it on a very regular basis and never noticed it, and you just happened to be grabbing it after they were kind enough to make it populate for you.
18934, I tested for that.
Posted by GinGa on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
And I played random times, with different characters around. There is no chance every time I went, 'that person' had walked past. Even if there were two or more of them, I tested against it.

The system doesn't work any other way AFAIK
And I've been messing with the sleek system a while.

Posted by Isildur on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I don't think it's as big a deal as Dragonstorm does, but I see his point. Suppose all mages get N sleek spots. Joe has N easy ones. Bob has N/2 easy ones and N/2 ones that are nigh-impossible for him to get solo, meaning he has to assemble a group to fetch them which isn't realistic given regular and frequent wand-use.

How is that fair to Bob?
18936, Well, considering N = 1
Posted by elmeri_ on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
There is no N/2 sleek spots. There is either 1 easy sleek black, or 0 easy sleek blacks.
18923, You mean these days it is like the new luck stat? (nt)

Semi understood, but as much misinfo and misunderstandings are to be found as truth? Sounds like it's a good candidate to replace luck with Nep being so forthcoming about it lately.
