18185, First char first hero...
Posted by DrumArtist on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Hey I just wanted to say the game is amazing. Very detailed and very easy to get around in. I am playing a warrior and as I have never played a MUD before, I have to say having my first char become a hero is a pretty good feeling. I learned about this mud from a friend who played it for about 7 years and I would constantly have to pry him away from the game just to hang out or whatever, and now I see the addiction. Congrats and keep up the great work!
I am sure I will have questions down the line but I think I am doing okay for now.

18189, Okay, question...
Posted by DrumArtist on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I have been playing for 470 hours, and it is obvious that I am not doing something right as far as PK'ing goes. I want to say it is based on my area knowledge, because I lack in that respect. Yet, to be honest I get owned within the first few rounds of fighting. And it seems to be from all other classes including my own. I hate to believe that it is my choice of the commands I enter, I usually go for beat down because I can't dodge or evade to save my life. Any tips fo the fleeing warrior?

18191, You need to be a bit more specific...

You say you get owned within the first few rounds... What is going on in these rounds?
If you are being maledicted (and perhaps dropping your weapon) you need to get some +str or +dex gear to balance this out.
If you are being straight outdamaged, you need to get some more dam (and to an extent +hit) gear, or perhaps switch to a more defensive weapon that will reduce the damage you are taking.
If you are at hero there is also a strong chance that your opponents are using preps/dam redux. To get on a level playing field you either need to play smart by running away so they burn their preps up, or you need to find an ally in game who's willing to show you how to prep.

Well, this is great advice, but they have not been able to drop my weapons, I am doing great with +str, and I have a 72 dam roll. I have yet to find anything near the ABS that the mages have or get a group together to gain some uber gear that the other warriors have that make all the time and effort put into gearing my warrior worth while. -DA

Other players are not mobs. They'll hit harder and have less hp than mobs. This will lead to most PK fights being shorter than fights with a toughish mob.
Few tips for getting away from a lost fight.
1)Flee when you think you are going to lose a fight. If you think that you are going to lose before the fight begins, that is when you flee.
2) Have potions of recall and teleportation at hand and a few more in your container. Quaff recall or teleport quickly after fleeing when you are trying to get away.
3) Don't get surprised. Keep watching periodically if there are other people nearby with where command.
4) Die and learn. Log your PK fights and think what you did wrong. Try not to repeat the same mistake next time.

I have read Dio's and been watching what others say, and they all say the same thing. I just seems that no matter what I do I can not get away from the fights even if I know the area well enough to move through it with my eyes closed. ( And I know a few that well.)
I have been doing the recall thing, yet the teleport has messed me up a few times, I usually get cought up with trying to outdamage them so that makes me low hp and a little nervous about dying to an agro mob when I tele. -DA

Make sure you don't spam commands in the fight, you have to act and react round to round. Get good at seeing what is going on in the fight, so that you can make your decisions faster. Also shield your weaknesses and exploit theirs, if you fight a felar use fire, dwarves use water etc. Knowing what your enemy is likely to do can help you anticipate what you will have to do in order to defeat them. Gear yourself to fit your race and class strengths/weaknesses, don't be afraid to ask IC about gear, because lots of people have alot of knowledge to share, especially at hero.

I've always said that first char being a hero is achievable, if people don't give up. So well done there. Glad you are enjoying the game.

It was rough at first but then I started to see what people reacted to in game, and let it go from there.
Now if I could only figure out a way to play from work. *think*
