18136, An Idea for Shopkeepers
Posted by lumikant on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
It would be nice if I walked into a shop if I could inquire about an item. It seems odd that many of the shops in Thera sell potions, wands etc. and tell nothing about what they do. It would also be nice to get general info on weapons, armor etc before buying. Output could be similar to the mob that Lores.

I give you BROWSE and INSPECT GOODS.

Browse would be nicer if it gave more consistent information. Too many items give the "Your house smell like orcs? Use x!" or "The Knights of Thera used x, and you should too!" type answers.

Yeah. Browse is top notch.

is your friend. It's basically the lore skill for shopping.

What I'm saying, is why would a shopkeeper, who seemingly wants you to buy his goods, not tell you what they do? I know I'd be pissed if I went into WalMart to buy shampoo and all they had were "A plain bottle of white plastic, A plain bottle of beige plastic, a transparent bottle holding green liquid." Then I go and ask an employee and they're like, "It will let you see in the dark."

Basically, theres no logical sense to why a shopkeeper would keep his #### a secret. Even better, you could tie the haggle skill into the info you get from a shopkeeper, so the higher haggle, the more likely you are to receive the most accurate information. That still wouldn't be as nice as having an actual lore/ident reading of the item, but it would make a lot more sense then the shopkeeper keeping it a secret.

Would you be more likely to buy said item if he told you this:

The ancient ranger bear tells you 'Yes indeed, Smokey's Map will increase your virility!'

Or this:

The ancient ranger bear tells you 'That map sucks. You don't need it.'

They don't have to tell you the truth, if the truth won't help them sell their ####. Note: not all shopkeepers are like this. Some are more honest than others.

That's why inspect goods is worth it.

Not that I've had problems, but I'd like to experiment.

I would actually prefer it it was more like

browse potion
The ancient ranger bear tells you 'Oh, a herbal potion will help light your way. What a bargain!'

browse potion
The ancient ranger bear tells you 'Its a simple potion that can be used to heal maladies like poison.'

Also, you might want to look into shopkeepers selling items that "you don't need."

Inspect goods does this.

I'd love to! If you see something for sale that you know for a fact no one needs, typo it.

Inspect goods would be more useful if it actually went up like lore did. I have had characters age die after having inspect goods for hundreds of hours, using it whenever I had mana to burn and could pass by a shop, and it still never budged above the low 80's.

Any chance of making Inspect Goods improve off of commerce experience since it doesn't seem to be something that improves normally with spam?

I'm pretty sure this is in the queue, waiting for a coder.
