1747, New Bardsong: "Pangs of Hunger"
Posted by Balrahd on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
OK, this idea is lifted from Falstaff. I found poetry with a quick web search so a bit more time may result in better lyrics.

*********
Song: Pangs of Hunger

Effects:
When sung in a tavern room, the Bard will receive either food (bread or soup) or ale.

Cost: 10 mana.

Purpose: Adds RP flavor to a travelling minstrel "working" for his food and drink. More limited than "create food" because it can only work in a tavern area.

Lyrics:
The pangs of hunger drove me from my home;
with no idea of where to go
I travelled on for miles
until I reached a village,
knocked on the nearest door,
blurted out some clumsy words.

The owner understood my need
his warmth dispelled my shame
that I'd come empty-handed.

We played and sang till sunset,
the wine-cups often tilted,
with the pleasure of new-found friends
we chanted and composed verses.

Like the words and all. Wondering if maybe evil bards could have something a little different. Maybe singing about what bad things happen to those who turn a hungry stranger away.

J/K I'm happy someone else liked the idea.

The origional thought was to let bards sing a particular song in any area crowded with mobs, and to have each mob maybe toss them a copper. Of course, any given mob would only throw a copper once a day or something to keep it from being abused. Idea being you'll never get rich singing it, but you can buy bread and water if needed.

The general model for the thought was the guys standing on the street playing their guitars for $$. I thought it could be cool to introduce that as a possibility in Thera. Also gives them a reason to be wandering about finding new crowds of mobs.

Of course, there'd always be mobs who would object, shall we say strenuously, to being begged for coins. It'd instigate some adventuring, as bards everywhere try to find the best places to sing.

His twist on it is cool too. Just looking for new ways to involve bardsongs in roleplay, e.g. the marriage song.

Oh, I also thought it'd be cool to have some bardsongs that you could quest for, someone hands you a sheet of music "You suddenly feel insight into BLAH" kinda thing. Adds some more flavor to the class, and lets bards sing some somgs just for fun. The songs wouldn't even have to do anything, it'd just be cool to add to your repertoire.

Just random thoughts from a guy wandering by,

still waiting for a conjurer to start using those Kaubris spells though. :)
1767, Why not do both?

It seems to me that you could possibly do both.
A song you sing in a tavern for food/drink like the one suggested here.

Then a different song you would sing for a coin or two, but if the mob doesn't like the song, they might just cover their ears and run away instead of giving you money, or they might throw rotten tomatoes at you.

Smile - It can't hurt and might help. :)

That's a good idea, too.

Something like the role or note command. You can log a song to sing just for fun with "song +", "song -", and "song clear".. maybe even "song color". There aren't very many bards, so it should be fairly easy to monitor for possible abuse and strip the command.
1766, heh. I do like this

It is something I plan to do anyway if I ever hero a bard.

I do have images though of songs that are similar to what you get when you look at Terminator.

Does the Innkeeper boot you out? Perhaps he could splash some ale on you.
