17268, Exploration and observation experience questions
Posted by Torak on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Couldn't decide if this was an "Ask an Immortal" question or right here, but here goes.
I've been wondering about the mechanics of this, mostly since I think everyone is interested in edges, and it's come up a few times that I really was exploring and got nothing - mostly from older areas. Now I don't know if this is because the area has to have every description coded "give X exp", but it doesn't seem right that to get exploration/observation expereince you do an "area recent" and look there instead of the various areas.
I've recently looked at spiderhaunt, barovia, emerald forest, and even the Inferno (great area) and walked out with 0 or minimal experience after hours of looking around at nearly books/cabinets/nests/inscriptions/etc I could get my hands on, yet someone can walk to the Kobold caves and walk out with thousands. I understand the Kobold caves is good to look at, but generally as a player gets older he wants to try and explore the harder areas (like Hell) and think that should be more rewarding, compared to running through the same 5 newest areas and getting thousands of experience for it. On my next char, I don't want to have to run through those areas again just for experience/edges when I could be trying out something new (which might be an older area).
I know you don't want to have people just spamming stuff for experience in any area, but just wondering if this mechanic can be looked over a bit - especially the Inferno or other hard "area explore" places (Organia has barely any as well).

Every area outside of Hell has been covered, and was covered from the day the system as a whole went in.
This doesn't mean all areas are equal, however. An area like Eastern Road doesn't exactly have a lot going on with it, even if it's bigger than a lot of other areas in terms of how many rooms it has.

Well I noticed there were quests added for reaching the circles - how about adding something there?

I added those probably 4 years ago. The only recent change was that you can now see them.

Hell has not been assigned with exploration/observation points yet, so exploring it currently gives you none. Imms don't feel comfortable adding the points there(in terms of personal knowledge of the area), as they think that Scar is more competent in adding the points there.
Let's hope that someone dares to pick up the ball and adds exploration/observation points to Hell!

I think the Imms are more interested in recent stuff, and that is understandable because everyone likes messing with whatever is new. However, just "sucking it up" and retro-fitting the older areas with appropriate explore and observation XP would probably be a good thing.
The main thing that got me on your side here was the bit about the Inferno...you should totally be getting good XP from setting foot there.
Also, if we're supposed to wait for the area writer to do that...well, I just don't see Scar coming around much, if at all, these days. Someone needs to take up the slack.

17284, WTF

I thought the guild was outlawed in Hamsah, on account of Faruq.

17285, I only know what I know...

And it doesn't include anything about Faruq. It does include that Sacer was on, and some sort of visible and monkeying around in the Sultan's Palace for a while. Then later there was a reboot and after that there was a conjie guild.

Ya I was there as the first conjurer in the guild, got invited by the Sultan's Tax Collector. Kind of neat, considering Hamsah was my hometown and it didn't have a guild for my conjurer.

I've heard Hell falls into this category (i.e. very little exploration/observation xp).

17269, Nep metioned something about this before

He said that unless the area author goes back and puts the observation "stuff" in, there won't be any. At least that's what I think he said, and I'm too lazy to search for it.

17270, I remember the same thing

And now my pot shot. Good thing we got rid of the old practicing system where people spammed for hours and lost that worth when the character was deleted, now we have people re-exploring the kobold warrens for every character. Thank God we eliminated spam practicing which wasted so much time. Exploring the kobold warrens is so much easier to bot, and the risk of death is so much lower!
Ok I'm done, but I do think it's a little silly.

17277, This is incorrect.

All areas (except Hell, per Scar's preference) got covered before the system went live.

17282, Really?
Posted by Drag0nSt0rm on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I'm a pretty damn hard core explorer and I bet if you gave me a challenge I could list quite a few old areas that have no experience at all in No observe No explore No nothin. And there is very much a element of risk and discovery.

17283, Never gotten any for Whistlewood....
Posted by Tac on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
A place I'd consider very dangerous. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure about that one. On a similar vein wastes of non-veil seems inordinately low (possibly zero), and I usually go there at psuedo-low levels with certain types of characters. Of course my memory isn't 100% reliable. It always seems like I get more observe/explore from random low level areas than areas which I actually struggle to survive in at higher levels.
Editted to add: I don't disbelieve you Valg, but it also doesn't seem to jive 100% with my own experience, so I'm trying to reconcile the differences.

Oh. Well he was specifically talking about Hell when he said that. I assumed it went for other areas as well.
