16405, lowbie quests
Posted by Menilin on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
This is just a quick suggestion. I find it sort of annoying that the newbie quests that involve hunting critters can't be completed, and yet, when you advance past the level limit for them, they are registered as failed quests, which sticks as a permanant blemish on your list of completed quests; and two failed quests that couldn't be completed no matter how many you killed. Perhaps those could be changed to be register as completed when you pass the level limit, provided that you actually killed SOME and collected your reward for them. That's all. Thanks.

They can be completed. Walking up and getting a little bit of cash for a kill is not completed.

Because you did fail to complete the quest.

Are you honestly that worried about a "blemish on your list of completed quests"? Why?

At this point in time it is not how I want to expand the quest infrastructure. I'd much rather spend the time getting the rest of the quests using the latest infrastructure before changing it again.

Zulg:

any chance on you adding mid-level killing quests? I think it's great that you've got these quests up to say.. 25. Add more! :D

I did the template for these (and the majority of the examples in play), and while I like how they work in that niche, I'm not sure it's a good idea as levels increase as they're not all that challenging. If you think about most of the quests up near hero, they've increased in complexity and reward considerably by then. This batch is designed to be low difficulty both in terms of combat, as well as structure-- straightforward task in a readily accessible place.

When I did that template, I did do a second one that I think works better at the middle ranks. Checking the logs, it looks like some people have figured it out, and it's a much better quest as far as getting the brain going. I may try to get one of the trainee coders to turn the crank on that template-- I've already set up an email with instructions and heavily-commented code for for someone before. Just need to dig it up.

Anyway, there are more plans in the works there. The "kill stuff" batch was designed as much as a training tool for new coders as an economic boon for newer players, and I think we can try to leverage that sort of thing more as manpower becomes available.

There's presently no convenient way to register them as anything other than 'completed' or 'not completed'. Yes, we could spend time developing additional infrastrucure to address this, but given that this "blemish" has no negative impact on you whatsoever, it would be remarkably low on the priority list.

This is incorrect.

I realize that the demon slaying quest can indeed be complete, however, I'm not yet convinced that all such newbie/lowbie hunting quests are the same. I haven't sat down and fully tested the wolf hunting quest yet, but as of this post, looking at the vermin quest, I've been paid for 93 kills but still no end in sight. If there is a means of completeting this quest, then I stand correct. However, it isn't looking like it yet.

93, huh? You're getting there! I can't remember, it might take like 150 or something. :P

These quests are really more so you can earn some extra money while fighting if you want to, but there is an end.
16453, Wouldn't that be enough kills to rank you past the quest? nt

Nah, not necessarily. People have definitely done it.
16455, I finished 4 lowbie killing quests with my last char...

Three before level 10 and the 4th before level 14.

It's doable.
16456, Sounds... unfun... was it worth it? nt

16457, Depends.

"Worth it" is in the eye of the beholder. We wrote up those quests primarily so less-experienced players had a steady stream of available cash and experience, while they learned to navigate a few areas.

None are in any way mandatory, and the rewards are intentionally somewhat modest due to the low difficulty of the quests as a whole.

Most of them I'd only do as a mage as mostly the reward, is more well rewarding vs as a fighter class.
16458, Its not bad.

I can do all the lowbie quests and it usually gets me to level 11 by the time I'm finished. Not to mention I have anywhere from 25-30 gold in in my pocket, and some unique items that are decent for lowbies.

I haven't tried this route with a lowbie mage, but they seem easy enough that I'd be able to solo to 15 or so by myself in a minimal amount of time(assuming I couldn't find a group).

I totally think they are worth it.

There are certainly some perks to it. Are they always worth it? Not necessairily.

They're certainly more time consuming than power-ranking, but at the same time with a low-int char it forces you to go slower and fight more often... and solo. So you work your defenses a bit. For a magi, it's a way to get to 15th pretty easily. And of course, with edges/commerce/observation stuff now, it is a minor benefit. Some extra gold for lowbies is good too.

Now, if I had found a nice set of limited gear in the temple pit, i'd powerrank immediately instead.

hope you get my drift. some minor perks. nothing character altering tho.
16460, Thanks all... gotta look for more lowbie quests... nt

16463, Vermin destroyed
Posted by Menilin on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Just thought I'd let folks know, I've finished the vermin, and I have to say, I think it's well worth the time involved, especially given that it's geared towards genuine newbies. I know if I was a genuine CF newbie, I'd find these quests (and rewards) very cool and encouraging. I've decided to go and start and finish the other hunting quest I spoke of, just to see what sort of reward awaits me there.

Cudos to the imms for these quests, even if they are annoyingly long ;-)
