14920, Area Explores and being a ghost.
Posted by Shadowmaster on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Recently I died in an area explore, and when I ran back there to get my things, I was met with the response of
"Your incorporeal body feels restrained by some force."
Praying about this, I was spoken to by a very helpful immortal who stated this change occurred because people were abusing ghost status to run places and grab stuff. I understood why this happened, but I thought of something that might be a better solution to this issue, without punishing the players actually going in there and dying on their own :)
Instead of blocking ghosts, period (Obviously certain explore areas will NEVER allow ghosts), maybe have a mob that auto-attacks anyone under 40th(Or 47th or whatever) level, ghost or not. This will prevent people from abusing the ghost status, and allow those of us who actually were in the area when we died, a chance to get back to our group etc.
Any thoughts?

14946, btw, since no one picked up on this

Your reasoning is that only a lowbie would want to ghost/grab #### from an explore area (or a number of other areas aswell). This is a faulty assumption, as I can think of a multitude of items that would be much easier acquired as a ghost. The top most one is a certain requestable ring, that any goodie could ghost and get.

What is to prevent the people who go in there on their own, die, and then abuse being a ghost to get into the place they didn't get into because they died?

14930, Nothing, the idea does have holes :)

I don't know a perfect solution here. What about making the items in any area explore, have level requirements? Then no lowbie can be overpowered when they get them, as a ghost or not. Many similarly themed games have effective level requirements in place, I always wondered why CF was unwilling to go this route.
Was the ghost status being abused that much in that specific area? Or was it just a specific, goodie-preffered group of items that people were running to get the minute they died?

This isn't limited to explore areas, by the way. It's a case-by-case evaluation. There are containers ghosts can't access, doors they can't pass, etc.
The problem is that detailed "blocks" are labor-intensive for a task that isn't terribly fun and isn't noticed by most players. Worse, they are more open to exploitation because of their complexity. The simple "block" of restricting access to an area or a section of an area prevents that.
Given that your corpse decays directly to you, the only real danger is that someone will get there before you do. The number of classes that can Locate Object a corpse has gone down a good bit, and it probably isn't an easy run for most people anyway.
That said, we're not opposed to some chance for gear circulation when you die. It's why we allow looting the way we do, and why we haven't put in hard limits on what you can wear at a given level.

How do you feel when a top-tier player gets a sick set of hero gear pre-20 and goes around pkilling their whole range? Pre-distention is this something you say "Oh thats fine", or "Damn. That guy is just gonna scare noobs away".

On the other hand, if you remove the ability to acquire high-end gear at low ranks, you remove a lot of the incentive to PK. There are plenty of legitimate avenues by which you can acquire that gear, and hard object restrictions aren't the solution I'd look for.

Top tier players don't really level sit either. Mind you, top-tier players incorporate pk with rp, so my definition of top-tier players may differ from someone else.
Low level pkers who level sit really don't grab my eye. A guy who has 50 kills while ranking from level 30 to 40 in 100 hours isn't really level sitting to me. The guy who has 100 kills at level 25 and has been level 25 for 100 hours is. That being stated, the guy who has been killed 25 times at level 25 for 100 hours isn't level sitting. He is a new guy trying to figure out how to play, and that guy will get some imm love.

I hope the "newbies" are getting a helping hand at any chance possible. Anyways, sounds good, man!

I look at that and generally think, the system is working as designed.
A player who is dangerous with a sick set of hero gear is also dangerous without a sick set of hero gear. A player who isn't very good and gets a set like that almost universally loses it very, very quickly.

Very true. As some of these other flamers like Derexal and Larcat would put it... I PWNZ JOO with my NEWBIEZ BRED!
I think some people just like to make complaints for the sake of making complaints. It's cool you guys put up with it and seriously answer the questions/comments/concerns.

Unless you kill the same two noobs over and over, I don't think anyone will be scared away :)

14924, how does this help?
Posted by incognito on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Either the mob doesn't kill you because it is so weak it can't kill an unarmored character, in which case it is pointless, or...
It kills you again, so you can't get back to your corpse.
How is either of the above better than just not being able to get into the area?

14926, Because I am over level 40 and therefore it doesn't attack me?
