13125, Lets change Death.
Posted by Pro on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I've always been peeved with what I feel is an unimaginative way of representing defete.

We lose a battle and say we 'Died', yet we are still running around interacting with one another.

I for one would like to see (Or not see as you will see) our 'ghosts' as being totally invisible. I could see an exception being made for this with reguard to undead or necromancers of sufficent power, but otherwise they are invisible and unable to physically interact. Communicate fine, but no -get/open/wield/etc.

When the ghost would arrive at the corpse instead of a get all corpse, they would --Enter corpse-- at which time it would reanimate to the tune of --So and so gasps convulsivly and color returns to her skin as she regains conciousness--.

Perhaps some intresting echoes that show limbs regenerating (Or skin if they had a sack or skin made from their corpse.)

Butchering would still work but it would leave a flensed body behind and not a pile of loot with a few steaks.

They would be outside of (PK) for a while whith a (Ghastly) flag attached to them.

In this way people would stop saying 'I just died'. It's always irked me. What's more if someone does delete or die of old age, then when it's said they died, then we know they are truely dead and gone.

How many times has it happened that someone says, 'So and so is dead'. Oly to be answered with 'You mean dead dead?'

Well that's the basis for it. What do you all think?

I don't really see a lot to be gained here, in exchange for a lot of non-interesting work.

Changing the echo's of succesful parries, doges etc?

I see it as adding a new angle to how we deal with Death. I already covered what that was.

I don't see it offering any benifits though, and as I envision it there could be some problems but we suspend reality a lot already.

I think a little spice to reanimation would add a lot of flavor to the game without having any effect on balance. I don't know about being completely invisible, or whatnot, but there could definately be some echoey goodness and maybe make it a bit more entertaining.

If this little inconsistency that's been around for years is going to peeve you people, you really have better things to focus on like figuring out how to get/keep/take advantage of preps and tattoos while improving more dramatic aspects of your roleplay.

When it comes to roleplay, short of someone who insists on using atrocious or uncapitalized grammer, you need to fix yourself FIRST and the other players SECOND, much like any relationship ranging from a buddy to a full blown marriage or family or something.

It's a game. There's limits on RP and game mechanics under the context of what's called 'within reason'. It's the same reason you're told to consider the TELL command and seaweed's properties as common IC knowledge as a sword. People have better things to do than to nitpick over this crap, imms who are forced to change echoes included. If your problem is with people saying 'I just died' then I have news for you, your RP probably has more obvious, glaring issues than 'I just died' which require attention if you're not being rewarded or otherwise feel dissatisfied with your RP experience.

13156, Full stop.

The first two paragraphs were personal attacks against me and have little to nothing to do with the idea.

I stopped reading and am thus unqualified to respond further

The word is GRAMMAR, my fellow curmudgeon, and if we are going to quibble over a missing shift key then certainly we should point out that one doesn't capitalize grammar but capitalizes letters. We have larger issues with which to contend like dangling modifiers, sentence fragments, mixed metaphors and how to properly punctuate those accursed dependent clauses in the midst of battling the Imperial hordes!

and i agree wit dis sentamint completley! Furthermore, I would suggest that anyone who derives satisfaction from pointing out the faults of others really should be given the immortal SLAY command with the restriction that it can only be followed only with a reflexive pronoun.

Cordially,

Quixotic

If we can admit and forgive our own flaws, it makes it much easier to forgive those of others.

Doesn't the same thing show when your post has Edited by Quixotic on top of it? You are clearly not perfect if you have to edit your own post. Also, wasn't the 'followed with' instead of 'followed by' in the same sentence with the onlies and error too(if it's not an error, I'd like to learn more about the logic of using with in this sentence. It is not about perfection, but the joy of discussing minor details.)? No-one is perfect and it shows without going out of your way to point it out.

>If we can admit and forgive our own flaws, it makes it much

More or less, yes. My only gripe with people who don't use capitalization IC is when they type a name with small first letter and when I type the first few letters and press tabulator to auto-write the rest of the name it gets typed with small first letter.

13134, What's really warped about cf death.
Posted by elmeri_ on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Is the inability to consider death in any perspective. Who hasn't played a role where parents/relatives/friends die in orc/elf/mage ambush. Well, why the #### don't these parents/relatives/friends just pop at the pit. What about bitter grudges held over death. Ragerboy continues to hate mages for potentially centuries based on a few mages killing his father, but doesn't give a rats ass if another ragerboy accidentally kills him several times in friendly duels. Doesn't make sence. It would be cool to mold the roleplay concept of death a bit.
What happens if I ask someone who tells a tragic tale of his past, that how was their father so low on can that one single death made him go away? My roleplay is after all way more valid than his in the setting of cf, yet I would be considered fairly obnoxious for doing it :P.

Look at the echo next time you die and consider it, if it helps you get into role.

You have died, but the Carrion Fields are not finished with you yet!

Admittedly, this might be better if 'Gods' was inserted for 'Carrion Fields', but look at it like this. The gods have returned you because you are special. That is what makes a PC distinguishable from a NPC. The gods choose to take notice of the PC's an give them more life, though is not something that Joe Bloe beggar can rightfully expect, because it is rare.

That Joe will be back begging for blow after 3-15 minutes :-<, and the lucky sob never runs out of con.
13162, I don't really mind either way.
Posted by elmeri_ on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I'm not very anally retentive about it, I would never actually play a role to undermine some else's. I'm the dude who has no remorse killing neutral mobs as a goodie, and I've always thought gameplay > roleplay. Just wanting to voice my oppinion that I sort of agree with pro that current death system is a bit controversial.
13164, Yeah, I'm agreeing with Pro. Don't faint yet.

Still, re-reading the above statement.. it doesn't make sense to go from ghost to flesh without a little... pizazz! Just because the gods bring you back doesn't mean it's all sunshine and lollipops. =)

Sure, it would be kind of... ghastly. the hacked bodies, the burned bodies... My personal favorite would be trying to get to and into a body under water... but just going from a visible ghost to a full bodied being without some colour is just... colourless.

I wouldn't call it a pressing issue, I mean, class revamps are generally more fun (Rangers!). But if someone was.. you know.. bored or idle, it could be something interesting to tinker with. Code aside, just coming up with the phrasing for some would be entertaining.

I wouldn't mind seeing it implemented someplace besides CF.
