12712, Paladin gold greed question
Posted by Rustanviel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Ok, let me first start by saying that I am by no means writing this post to complain, I am writing only for clarification. So, I'm trying to solve a quest in this explore area, and I come to a place where there is a treasure with 130 gold. Now, I thought to myself, jeeze, that's a lot of gold for a paladin to be carrying, but it doesn't make sense to just leave it on the ground. So I say to myself, 'What would a paladin do?' I decide a paladin sure as heck isn't going to leave all of this gold on the ground when it can cause so much good back in the world. So, I grab the gold, and am still in the progress of completing this quest, when I get this image of poor beggars suffering in Galadon less than 10 minutes later. I proceed to leave the quest immediately, and go to Galadon, and give the entire treasure away, leaving myself with only 8 gold, which is what I had going into this adventure, then I proceed to go and give away that gold as well, and as I am doing so, recieve a 'divine being sucks away your experiences' or something like that. Let me repeat, I am not complaining, but I acted, I think, as a paladin would. I did have a massive amount of coins for a little while, but I was in the middle of a quest to rescue a benevolent being. I really wasn't punished in any tangible way, but it still bothers me. I acted as I thought a paladin would. Would a paladin leave gold on the ground, just to avoid carrying it, or is the purpose of not carrying a lot of gold to be sure that you give what you have away? This, I think, is my point. My interpretation of the purpose is not to be sure that a paladin doesn't get gold, but the purpose is to make sure a paladin does not have enormous amounts of gold on him, just to have it. What I'm saying is this.... I was supposed to get a lesson from what happened, but I do not understand what I was supposed to learn, other than maybe that I should have left the gold on the ground instead of grabbing it.... could someone explain the lesson I was supposed to take from this?

Get that 'clerical' shop in Voralian city to stock my new bracers. They're for those of the Light that might question their morals at times. When in doubt, they can look upon the bracer into which is inscribed...

WWPD?

Provided you gave the whole story, it's possible someone just happened to check how much gold the various paladins online had at the moment, saw how much you had with no idea of what you were currently doing, and went ahead.

In general I think most of us try to only bust paladins that consistently have too much money. At least in my book, one time of having a bunch isn't going to be punished. Maybe you've been found with lots of gold before? Or loaded down with limited gear you can't use or something like that? If that's the case it might have just caught up to you now.

Anyway, it's a minor thing. I would just carry on and be mindful!

Roleplay is not just for when you know you're being watched, by an immortal or mortal:

<Room Desc>

130 gold is sitting on the ground here.

say By the hair on Aarn's ass! That'll feed the needy for fortnight after I save this benevolent SOB and get back to Galadon!

get gold

say Sure is heavy though, I'll hurry up with what I'm doing so that I can distribute this faster. What one can't carry, many will be happy to.

I'm betting that your said divine being would have guided you to new experiences rather than sucked away your experiences. Seeing as you were being watched, and all. Just my opinion.
12722, RP, to me
Posted by Rustanviel on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
RP, to me, is doing what that person would do in that situation. Now, your average person, finding a treasure of that sort, might say something like 'Holy ####! I just won the lottery!' or something like that. For the power gamer, to always RP as if someone is watching is good and needed advice, but for a RPer, better advice is to always act as if no one is watching. When I say that, I mean your characters actions should be defined by what they would do, not trying to portray a certain image, just in case someone is watching. In your life, your actions are not guided to verbalizing every action you make. AKA.. your sitting there by yourself in the living room with a good TV show on, but you have to go to the bathroom.... do you

A. Go to the bathroom....
or
B. Say 'By David Hasselhoff's sweaty balls, I need to take a steamer. Sure is heavy though, I better hurry up with what I'm doing so that I can distribute this faster.

How often, in your life, do you monologue to try and justify your actions when no one is listening? That is not what someone would do. If I had company with me, I could have said those things, but my character isn't going to result to talking to himself just in case someone is watching, when he is not the sort of person to be talking to himself.

You may say 'Well, you are a priest, a priest would assume someone is watching.' However, like my character, I do not verbalize all my thoughts to my god, I assume he knows me better than I know myself, that he knows what I am thinking, and what is driving me.

And this folks is why a think command is so damn good on a RP mud. Because choice situations like that should not only be viewed by the Imms but should reflect what your character perceives.

think Gods of Light above! This could feed a thousand orphans for a year!
get all gold
think Okay I best take care of the needy first, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one.
wnwnwnwnwnwnneeeennnnwwww....
give gold Knight(in Orphanage in Balator)

All done. Return to previous viewed programming already in progress!:D

Now judicious use of a think command in a situation like that cues the Imms to look at what you are doing if they are not already and to take note on your character's behavior.

Having a small "think" log (eight to ten thinks a week that are cleared out at the end of each week) attached to a character OR even just a "think" channel that ditches all everyone thought every fifteen to ten minutes RTime helps a lot in showing motivation and inclinations.

sure, it isn't logged, but it serves the purpose.

'tell self' rules

I had the same idea a few years ago, consensus was that 'tell self' should serve this purpose. A think log would obviously help the paladin's problem in this thread, as well as serve as an addition to the role command to provide more granular, mundane quirks and depth to all characters. Maybe the Imms will give it another review this time around.

12736, Do you seriously play like that?
Posted by Eskelian on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I mean, yeah, it might be better RP to talk to yourself. Theoretically at least.

I'm not going to walk around talking to myself all the time though. I don't think its really fair to expect people to. I'd have waited a half hour and seen what happened.
