11856, Is CF's instability chasing people away?

In terms of MUDs, CF is ridiculously stable.

My only wish is that the newbie quests didn't die when it crashed. I got fuxxored out of 2 quests on my last newbie :(, that's like two levels I coulda got.

We have about two dozen skills in that are less than a month old, along with all the supporting code for orcs, dragons, and a major project which will be in progress for a bit. Add that to a pile of smaller additions (Muuloc-ism, new quest action, the continued sneaking of near gear into old places, area content revisions, etc.), and it's not surprising that we crash from time to time.

As far as last night's crashes, I was able to ID the causes of two of them, and they're fixed. The other two, I have a vague notion, and I've forwarded a request on to someone who knows more about that particular topic.

Every crash gets looked at like that, often right away. Sometimes, the wreckage tells us nothing useful, but often we pinpoint and repair the cause (and/or guard against similar causes). CF's code is inordinately complicated-- one of the fixes I put in was for a bug that is at least 6 years old, but it was a weird sequence of events.

In any event, our January performance doesn't seem to be chasing people away in droves. (If anything, we're on a small uptick.) Doomsaying doesn't do anything to fix the problem, and can actually be harmful.

The crashes last night seemed to be every two hours on the dot?

And the night before the disconnects every 7.5 minutes?

If you mean the crashes, man you have not seen unstable. If anything I dislike those week long uptimes a LOT more than one night a week of a few crashes. Go back a few years, if you were here, and think how long the mud was up at any give time. Hell, go way back like ten years. However I can't really compare it to other muds, haven't played any other ones in a long time and the ones I did I was never on long enough to tell if it was crashy. So no, I doubt it will chase anyone away unless it happened to be a first time player that logged on like right at the first crash.
