11797, Gear Hoards and Game Mechanics.

I know that there's a number of gear hoarders out there, as easily noted in some PBFs and comments in the Battlefield. And the whining about full loots has to be tied into this somewhere.

I know there's already a few fixes in for gear hoarding, but I had a thought (yes it hurt, laugh all you want =P ).

Is it possible as far as coding goes to put a hard number limit the number of limited/unique items a character can possess at any one time, and is this a solution that's possibly been discussed and discarded?

And then, to kind of counterbalance, is it possible to put a lag on looting these (limited) items in general. They are supposed to be special and rare (HA!).. picking them up may give you a brief sense of awe that you actually get to hold this fantastical item in your two bitty hands.. ? Slightly longer lag for higher level items.. I'm not saying a full tick of lag per item here, less than that to be sure.. But if you loot a full set of limited gear, be prepared for a tick of lag, that's for darned sure. And I do mean looting in general, which means when you first aquire the item from the mob in question as well as when it's looted from another person.

Again.. perhaps considered and discarded?

I think with both implemented it's a fair solution on both sides, and would make people seek out non-limited gear solutions. But I could be deluded. =)

11805, Seriously. This is not a problem. Find out who hoarde...

Please let's not turn this Mud into a easy PK game. I will say again, everytime I've been full-looted, I've regeared better than what I had before my next death (well, except two or three times...out of about twenty). Yes, it sucks. Yes, seeing a character once a month that is stacked to the #### sucks knowing you COULD get that gear if it wasn't unique, but so what? Is gear really this important? I thought the purpose of the game was to have fun? I may get frustrated when I die, but you know what, I still had fun, still got an adreniline rush for being at the edge of living or dying.

In short, everyone needs to stop whining about gear period. Full-loot, full-sac (which is just donkeyhole-ish, though it doesn't make me as mad as it did before), lowbie looted, hero looted, gear hoarders, people obsessed with building the perfect set, C'MON MAN. You know what my perfect set is? They all are.
11812, I'm actually WITH you on this one.

I'm just getting sick of the whining, and this idea happened to roll into my head. I was hoping it would piss everyone off equally, because then it really would be fair. =P

Hey, it was a remote consideration. And if Valg (or any of the other imms) thinks it's not going to work, I'm actually happy about it. I don't see a problem with full loot, or the gear whoring's own special fixes.

I've been thinking of stripping my character to all but naked and putting that in as my best set. =P I may yet give into this temptation.

11799, On limited items

Limited items are limited, so that people would fight each other for those rare items. Making them harder to loot makes little sense, when in fact they are limited so that they would be more valuable to loot. The thing what people whine about most is others looting their charred bracers and other easy to get reagear items that they don't really need.

My last character never enountered full loot, worst being losing a progged hammer in one loot and midnight dragon boots in other, which were got by ganging looting the same person whose gang stole it from my orc's corpse. Full looting is more common in cabal wars than random encounters with disorganized enemies such as orcs.

And what comes to limited items, the number of those you can hold is limited as well. It is up to you how you choose to use up your inventory space.

We have no problem with characters possessing a lot of limited gear, so long as they're using it. The item hoarding code does a pretty good job of keeping it out of the hands of guild-sitters, and we've recently added some tools that make handling request-n-sit characters much easier for the staff.

Also, looting limited items is great by me. I don't know why anyone except a hoarder would want to limit it. There's a perfectly good IC and OOC reason for doing it-- they tend to be worth a lot in trade, barter, or sale. You'll generally see the staff comment on a character who follows some newbie around with his 5 friends and takes all their newbie bread.

I can't find my registered handle password, so this is my only resort (I'm too lazy to make a new one). Plus it sort of has to do with goodieness maranness so here it is.

What do Imms think about characters that hold onto uber limited items that they can't use. Say a person who's been holding onto both hummingbird pendants for a long time and is evil. Now this certainly goes both ways, as I've seen goodies with etched pendants and a certain mask etc..

Personally, for the sake of game funness I think there should be something to discourage this. Say for example the goodie should be encouraged to destroy this evil object, and the evil well...a bit trickier but maybe the pendant or shiny goodie-only sword should get pissed and crumble or something?

The devil's advocate would say 'Quit whining and kill the dude and take it from his corpse'. True, but in some situations it's simply not going to happen. I.e. Assassins who very carefully pick their fights or someone who only logs in a couple times a week to avoid the hoarde code.

I mean these items were meant to be used right? Not sit in someone's inventory for weeks on end. Maybe this isn't even happening and I'm way way off. If so I'm sorry.

1) Carrying around limited stuff you can't use is a handicap, because it eats inventory space. It has a price, which I think is punishment enough, and it's probably why I very rarely see this happening(*).

For example, I just checked the inventories of the 15 highest-level people on line. 2 top-end items total jumped out at me as unusable for that character, and they were both just weapons that character couldn't learn. In both cases, they could logically just be holding them for an ally, just grabbed them off a disarmed foe, etc. And 2 items on 15 hero-range characters isn't much to worry about.

2) Especially if it's highly limited, logging in a couple times a week just to dodge the hoarding code... won't dodge the hoarding code. It's a little more crafty than people think.

(*): This might be a natural consequence of selective memory. If you Peek a necromancer and see all evil stuff, that's not very memorable. But when you see 5 holy objects, your brain says "Why would he carry those?", and the memory stands out. You remember exceptions, which is part of why people frequently overstate the frequency of "Cabal X breaks its own rules constantly!".

More relevant would be checking the location of the unique or very-near unique gear. I think that's more what the original poster was interested in. (Jewelled broadswords, who cares. Hummingbird pendants, Yarr!)

edit: (by original poster i meant icthaen, oops)

1) You're quoting the asterisked text, but not what it was referring to.

2) If anything, limits are 'loose' right now. We've been steadily adding high-end gear to the game (old areas picking up new gear, new areas tend to have more than old ones, Hell increasing in accesibility, etc.) without adjusting limits, and it's not unusual for a lot of objects that I used to consider permanently maxed to sit with unclaimed copies.

11813, Looting limited...
Posted by Tharena on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Is actually a modification of someone else's idea that every item lag when you try to do a full loot. Or was it when a charmie does a full loot. =P I remember the original idea went over like a lead balloon, but the idea seemed quazi sound. The focus wasn't on limited items save as a vehicle to carve into full looting. It makes vaguely more sense to hit the limited items than the non-limited. But excellent points made that I forgot about.

I'm glad this isn't a big a problem as a lot of these cry-babies make out. Again, I am in the no change camp, but with the volume of whining and the idea in my head, I figured I'd contribute on the off-chance it would carve into the volume and lower it to a more tolerable level. =/

I realized this morning the whining won't end until the sky turns sky-blue-pink'n'purple, but will die down a bit when Kaisse is gone. =)

... Le Sigh?

(pulls out a big box of sky-blue-pink'n'purple pacifiers and offers them up for use by the Imms as a 'special reward' for ultra-elite whiners) Did I mention they cast sleep AND silence person? =)
