11257, Common names
Posted by Pro on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I think most everyone here knows who I am talking about. Why is this allowed? Aren't we supposed to be immersed in an Epic adventure?
This is very annoying to me, to the point that I am going to substitute his name.
What's more, the name in question is a shortened form of another name, and as such, I feel, it should be inserted much as Bliggy was in Bligdun (SP?) was.
I know you all are working hard on this, but this is maddening. Coupled with his particuallry abrasive manner, I can't help but think this is someone seeing how far he can get.
Why is this allowed? It just boggles me.
I for one am a stickler for rules, if this is going to become a trend, at least change the naming rules, if for no other reason than it wont seem as if we are playing with people who want to do nothing more than piss in our Wheaties (TM).

11270, Its how poor players make up for lack of skill.

If they cannot kill you in game and full loot you and make you angry that way, they'll pick a purposefully poor name knowing it irritates people. You're right, its the full looter mentality extended to people without the capacity to do so. And to the guy who said "I must be bad at this game to care..." I don't see what one has to do with the other. If I made a bard called Amy Grant, I don't see how that is roleplaying. If I made a warrior named Conan the Barbarian, I don't see the roleplaying aspect. How do you hang out with a guy named Johnny P, Archmage? I'm not trying to play a Mud version of Grease, I want to be immersed in an RP atmosphere. I don't even mind full names as much as I mind shortened ones.

11284, heh, actually.

I've seen the purposefully bad names on disillusioned elites more often than newbies, I think. If I see someone named "Bill" or something it's probably Jhyrbian.

11285, I don't really agree.

I know one of them was played by an old veteran, which was surprising, but Jhyrbian and Palan and etc wouldn't do this. They have good RP and don't need to find ways to annoy people.

11262, proposed solution

now now, if you don't like it so much, just bitch rank him to 30 and then pk him into oblivion. make this a common practice and eventually all the REALLY ####ty names will be used up and you can return to feeling immersed in cf without having to fret about whether or not a name is medieval/fantasy enough.
surgeon general's warning: the above may contain sarcasm.
now, for some honesty on my part. until very recently i too had a beef with common names, but i realized that my character would have no basis for disliking someone because of his/her name, and if i did treat them negatively or ignore them completely, i was bringing ideas into my roleplay that were OOC and shouldn't be there at all. however, when creating a new character, the very FIRST question asked during the naming process is, "is this an original name as far as you know?" i do believe, with this newly observed relaxation on character naming standards, this question should be removed and possibly the whole name/question segment rethought/rewritten.
until then, don't let something as trivial as a name ruin the fun factor for you. i really, really, really hope there aren't experienced players pissing in our wheaties and the misunderstanding or ignoring of the name rules/questions is simply the result of a newbie being in too much of a hurry to read.

11263, It's an entirely OOC issue.

Hece the problem.

So if the entire problem is your OOC conception of what constitutes a good or bad name then obviously their is no IC problem with names like mike. Technically there would be no ic problems with names like laserbeam either but well thats crossing a line I think. Do human names cross that line, absolutly not. Area authors have used common names for mobs, that alone shows that in Thera common human names are totally acceptable.

11266, I didn't say Mike.

You seized upon it though, that in and of itself is telling.
Let's take a name like Bob. Bob is a Nickname for Robert. It is a Familial name people would geberaly not use until such time as they were told or felt that Robert need not be needed.
Thus, I feel Robert should be the Characters name, with Bob being what his friends and family call him.
Robert 'Bob' Justlikeseeingwhathecangetawaywithbecausehedoesntbelieverulesapply2'm.
Ya dig?
Pretty ####ing infuriating when I try my damndest to contributew within the limits of the rules and others consistantly push the envelope.
Least how, that's how I see it.

I used to be a big name nazi myself until I sat down and realized... does it matter? Am I really so piss poor at this game that I can't enjoy it because of someone elses name? I mean its a human name on a human... maybe it is a bit strange or out of place in the cf landscape but so are a TON of roles people attempt to pull off with nothing but support for trying something new and different.
I could honestly care less if his name was toejam or tualantup what matters to me is roleplay. If he doesn't roleplay then well he should be treated like anyone else who doesn't. But the interesting challenge that a character like this presents is attempting to seperate our own OOC persona from our IC persona and interact with him just as if his name was blubber. Don't let his poor choice of name turn you into a poor roleplayer.

11287, My angst stems from personal experience.

I had an imm go nuts on me when I was a newbie a long time ago because I had a storm giant named Tiphun (typhoon). I was thinking up all kinds of other ways to mispell storms of some kind, and he just got more mad. I think we've all had a name get shot down some time, and we probably thought there was nothing wrong with it. Now the standards seem to be so low, that in a small way, I resent being put through the wringer before. Those of us that have been here for a long time, more or less feel that finding appropriate names is just one of those learning hurdles. If a newbie can't even take the time to think of a proper name, should we even care if they are here? I'm all about volume of players, but there should still be some quality controls. Also I have to agree, that it is the shortened names that bother me the most. If there was a Robert running around, I would just shrug and move on. If there was a Bob the conjurer running around, It really just yanks you back out of the cf world.

11258, I thought nobody else cared. I hate agreeing with you. nt
