11238, Rant Warning: Know your role?
Posted by Caleban on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Looking at how many people end up deleting I truly wonder why you people are even playing? It is bizarre to see people rocket up levels in order to delete. Love having a character that makes an impact either with a pk spree or a some nifty RP then just goes "POOF".
If you are bored with PKing try roleplaying if you are bored with RP then throw in some PKing. Anyone who plays a character for less than 200 hours is wasting their time. You get out of the game what you put in. You want Imm interaction? Have a role that is interesting and new then do something to earn it. Want to socialize? Try talking to people, tells are there for a reason. Want to explore? Find a few people and go for it.
It is absolutely sad to see veteran players constantly tossing out characters because they are not perfect. And while I know this is most definately not the same for most, it is just as sad to me to see people with multiple characters. Stay the course with a character and quit chumping out people with new characters in multiples or the infamous "delete delete" because something did not go how you wanted it to. You are hurting those who have invested in your character: players AND immortals.
A round of cheers for those people who stick it out to con or age death! Darned amazing. Most novels would suck if the lead characters simply upped and quit a couple chapters in.

I'm normally a con death guy. figure you might want to have my outlook on it. :) I just deleted an orc. about 25th, I think I just gained before hand. Had some nifty rp with him with a few people. Got down in the mouth and aced him. :) Had I rolled another character somewhere down the line, I'd have just switched over. might have kept me from deleting. (When I play evil people I almost always do this, when I catch my evil guy being too nice, i switch to a lowbie goodie and get it out of my system, I just haven't rolled a character until the main one was dead in a long time.)
I cheer people who age or con die myself, because I know what that takes, even if it's mainly elves and there isn't as much con to go around. I just have a thing about people who never give up. (Yeah even though they are technically terrorists I have a soft spot for the IRA) Pro's tracing my ip addy now since i used the word terrorist. :) j/k man.
I came to a realization that I have nothing to do. So I'm probably about to roll up a different character. hahaha.
Sorry bit dingy been drinking. Let's see. If someone deletes I don't really worry about it unless I think (imho) they really had something there. Then I'll throw in my 2 cents about how I wish they hadn't. I've wanted to delete over an awesome run followed by a single devastating fall. On those I usually try to tell myself, "Dude this is CF hullOOOOoooo. It starts with a skull and asks you what named you want to be mourned under." puts it in a better perspective. I've gotten to where I HATE regearing. hehe.
If it sucks for you to play it, delete. If there is still fun in it or some idea that there may be fun again soon, roll with it. I just have an amazingly large capacity for hope. hehe so I drag it out. even on most of my final deaths I'm hoping I can get that cabal item back before I die. or take one of the horde out... just one.. if i get lucky... oh fark.. better stand up first. :) Not everyone has that. From where I sit it's cool to con die. and I salute anyone who does it. but I'm not gonna come down on people for not doing it. (unless like brumm: man that could have been sooooo awesome of a character. hehe j/k I understand your choices. hehe If I think they shoulda stuck it out I say so. If it jacks my characters plans/role I'll whine, but that's just all about me. :) fark gotts go.

>I just deleted an orc. about 25th, I think I just gained >before hand.
After I deleted my orc(there was no appeal in heroing an orc those days), they got some low level loving to help them. Now when you deleted yours, they got specializations and can now take diffrent roles in the orcish society. This is how the Imms punish us for not sticking in there with our orcs. ;D
But seriously, Imms, good job with the class. I wouldn't delete an orc for the same reason I deleted Murgh over(which was the low appeal of heroing an orc). The high level specializations were something the orcish society needed to have heroes among its ranks. I'm definitely interested in returning to the class now.

Anyone who plays a character for less than 200 hours is wasting their time.
I've seen plenty of very impressive characters who lived less than that. And for a casual player (say, 4 hours/week), you're basically telling us they can only try one character per year? Please.
We have incentives in place for long-lived characters. They tend to be chosen more often for quests, custom rewards, leadership positions, etc. They enjoy an improved rate of skill improvement as well. We've implemented deletion code that helps prevent hasty and irrevocable decisions. Etc.
That said, it's ridiculous to tell other people when it's time to hang up a character. If they're not enjoying that character, what gives anyone else the right to tell them they must keep playing it? Maybe they have a new idea they want to try out. Maybe that character doesn't fit their style.
It's their time. Let them use it as they wish.

> Anyone who plays a character for less than 200 hours is wasting > their time.
At the risk of becoming the unofficial spokesman for infrequent players, I will say once again that 200 hours is a huge amount of time. Not everyone plays 20+ hours in a week.
> it is just as sad to me to see people with multiple characters.
I don't do it much anymore, but when I did play frequently, having multiple characters helped keep me from deleting. If you're bored or frustrated with one, you can go play the other until the magic comes back to the original one. There are other reasons to have two characters as well. I have one for playing at work and another for playing at home.

11253, Explanation

Well I don't know about other people but I find myself coming back to this game over and over again because of its complex dynamics. I like trying something new and figuring out what I can and cannot do with it. I don't like falling into a routine, unless of course I find that routine to be fun. There are very few characters out there that are not going to start falling into a routine at some point and once that happens you have to decide if your still having fun.
I don't really care about how many hours it is I put into a char. I don't think age death or con death is any better then delete delete. Deletion is not always giving up its also moving on to something new and exciting.

11249, My own rant.
Posted by Eskelian on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
If thats what people want to do, well, thats ok. I delete pre-200 hours sometimes. Sometimes I auto, unexpectantly. Sometimes I feel 'tainted' with the char, because I did something poorly RP-wise, and feel unable to continue. Sometimes I just get frustrated and need a break.
But, that being said, the occassional char that never makes it above 40 isn't a problem for me.
As for power ranking a char to hero and deleting within a one week period...well, I don't get that either, but to each his own. I don't get why people like golfing either, but, hell, go for it.

To start it off, we all know I am a deleter. I’ve had some good characters that I have gotten disappointed with and deleted. Here are some of the reasons why.
When I try to RP I a often assailed by People who talk like they are in a chat room. I think by now, my dislike of people who will not punctuate or use appropriate uppercasing is known. It’s not tat I am concerned in any sense about sentence structure, but it makes it easier to read and get a feel for that character. When people do not do this, they come across as 12 year olds to me and I find it impossible to be impressed with their characters. It helps to know if a character is asking a question or excited etc.
As far as PK goes, I’ve found that too much PK leads to the inevitable full loot, full sac. I tend to play Good characters who wear only what they find or what they earn on the course of an adventure. I will not kill goods or neutrals for their gear if they are reasonably considered to be sentient. What’s more I will not associate with people who do those things. As a neutral I will not kill for gear either, but I’ll tolerate it in others. So for me gathering gear is a chore to say the least. It takes me real life days to accumulate a decent set in most cases. As an evil, I play almost Orcs exclusively so I have many enemies and I am often left with nothing. Regearing isn’t such a chore but it is more often.
I do agree that I feel bad for other players who have invested time into my characters, thus I tend not to form bonds.
Anyway that’s couple of big reasons for me not to do what you have suggested, though I still do the of course.

Let us not forget that we play this game for fun, and for fun alone. If you are not having fun with a character and think another character might be more fun - start a new character. Sometimes you try out an idea (PK or RP) and it doesn't work out - it is alright to move on to the next idea!
I can't think of anything more stupid than to keep "sticking it out" with a character thats boring or frustrating. You use the example of a novel whoes main character quits in the first chapters. I say if the novel sucks after the first few chapters the odds are that the remainder of the novel will suck, and you should probably find something else to read that will be more enjoyable.
We are give prescious few moments on Earth, if you choose to spend those moments playing CF you should make them the most enjoyable moments you can. Maybe the poster instantly likes every character he roles up, but that is not the norm, and the poster should not expect every one to conform to his obscurities.

Seeing people delete after they have reach level 40 or more because they do not like what just befell them is BS. Hell if you can not figure out that you dislike a character by level 25 or earlier then you have got some issues. Caveat: if you are newbie it makes perfect sense because of the lack of understanding game mechanics etc but veteran players pulling that crap is just sad.
And your arrogance to think that you are alone in what you are doing in a multiplayer game is rather arrogant. Sure you can put the book down and wuss out but you just screwed over everyone else in the same story who had included you. Everything in your post screams selfishness and there are a ton of games that allow for pure selfish play but a game with true roleplaying never does. And before you get all whining with CF is a PK game.. PK in CF is pure RP goodness.
Look at all the posts in the Battlefields forum where people are mourning the loss of a character their characters are interacting with. Flunruk's goodbye is a great example: Player did not like what was going on in the Village and blah blah blah.. I have traveled with the greatest ... and new players are annoying... well damn it if you are a veteran and obviously doing well, stick it out! Make a difference in game with respect to altering what you see is wrong because you ARE a veteran. Reading that post was annoying especially after enjoying some of his RP and PK in game.. all of which was cheapened by his deletion.
Sadly Flunruk's case is not the exception but the norm on CF. Mizzarah's case on the other hand is the shining example of trying to stay the course even though I think the character concept used is fundamentally flawed for CF. Look at what idea it brought out: make a series of Imm curses with varying degrees of maledictions. Imms' Gods would have a great tool for just showing how miffed they are with what you just did/said with respect to their religion.
Enough said to you; selfish Stunna.

Just to point something out, whom is more selfish : The guy who leaves you hanging by deleting, or you for asking him to stick it out even if he doesn't want to?
I feel your pain though, I've been left holding the bag a few times myself, but I don't get where the hostility is coming from.

>Just to point something out, whom is more selfish : The guy >who leaves you hanging by deleting, or you for asking him to >stick it out even if he doesn't want to?
And how long do you think that character is going to be worth having around if the player behind it doesn't enjoy playing? It will just fall into depper and depper (muahah i funny!) crappiness.
Let us also not forget that in real life people lose conviction and motivation as well. Often times your role models fail you, and the friend you thought would be by your side sticking it out decides its not worth it. If you are building my character into your story, build him back out when he wusses out. Isn't that more realistic roleplay anyway?

I do not like hanging around people who are constantly on the losing end.
That aside, all you said was opinion. A rather hostile one at that.

11288, This is a hobby, not a job
Posted by jasmin on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
If a person isn't enjoying an aspect of their hobby anymore, it is certainly their right, if not encouraged to find a new way to enjoy it. You really seem to be up on some kind of high horse here, and I'm not sure where you became the fun police. It is up to each person to decide how this place is enjoyable for them*. I don't really see how their level at time of deletion is even applicable. I just recently deleted a hero transmuter before 100 hours I think, because I just realized it's not really my style of play. If I had to stick out all of my characters that I lost the taste for over the years, I would have quit this game a long time ago. However, since we are allowed to move on to something new at any time, I have stuck out over a decade, and really enjoyed it. Let people play their own way, and you can just play your own way, and everyone will be happy.
*As long as their enjoyment stays within the game rules.
