10942, interesting feature from another ROM-based mud
Posted by Isildur on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
So, out of curiosity I tried telnetting to another fairly-high-rated ROM-based mud. When creating my character, after choosing a name, I was forced to wait for immortal approval. There was a timer going, so that if no immortal approved my name within 5 minutes then I was "auto-approved". Presumably characters whose names are "auto-approved" are flagged so that they can be reviewed asynchronously.
Would this be useful for Carrion Fields, or just a collossal pain in the ass? Possibly a task that could be delegated to heroimms?

10953, (Another Game) does this

When I tried Another Game, which requires chars to be approved in order to be saved. This is a short and simple procedure, but it can feel arduous if you have to reroll three times because the MUD crashes before you can reach level 2 and be approved. This was my experience of the system and I prefer the one CF already has. I think it is simpler to disapprove the chars that don't have good names(the epic adventures of Joe the elf to the Realm of the Dead) instead of having to approve everyone manually.
My experience of this system is that it makes it possible to lose my char due to MUD crashes multiple times before I am approved.

Doesn't sound terribly fun to me, as a player or an administrator.

We just went through a change to make the process of creating a viable new character a one-minute process, after years of it taking hours (first rolling implementation, with an 8 minimum), or 15 minutes or so (second rolling implementation, with a 13 minimum). Part of this goal was so a new (or returning) player could walk onto the MUD with a bare minimum of hassle.

I agree that less hassle is a good thing. I guess the difference here, compared to stat rolling, is name approval is a completely passive activity. I don't have to process any text and/or hit any keys.

Only very new players had to react to the old rolling-- most other people used triggers or software to automate the process. It was still wasted time in between the decision to start a character and the ability to actually do it.
I'd rather spend that time playing instead of waiting. I don't see us pursuing a system like this.
