10714, Room names in "Where" command
Posted by Splntrd on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Would it be possible to colorize the room names that show up in the "where" command in accordance to their type?
People Near You: (PK) Festlethrum Some forest room (PK) Murhteltsef Some water room
A-like so. Or is that overpowered?

10717, How?

I'm undecided on the whole issue, but I'm curious how he could color rooms by terrain type off of 'where'.

add a tag to **all** the rooms called "color where how what = ". Then add the code to the "where" command to check for this and display it.
Easy, huh?
No.

I'm not asking for an M&M Mud (btw, one actually exists, no joke), I'm asking for an additional bit of information.
The names of rooms of various terrain types are already color-coded. I call this the precedent, which is always a good place to start an argument. This is useful information, considering that Druids, rangers, and Outlanders need to know if a room is forested or not. Invokers like to know if rooms are water-based. It's nice to know if a room is civilized or indoors, or caves. Swamps are useful to orcs. Terrain is a VERY important factor in CF, and to acknowledge that, the Imms have given us an easy way to identify which rooms are of which terrain type via color-coding, which is universally accepted as being the most effective means of organizating information.
Following through with this precedent (color-coded room names in room descriptions, if you didn't catch that), would be color-coding the room names in the WHERE command.
How would this help? One scenario: A ranger isn't familiar with the forest area he's in. He scans, and sees someone in the scanning radius. He doesn't know the room-name, so has no hints as to whether or not he can creep into that room. So he types where, and sees that this person is (PK) Xaanix Some ambiguous Room Name Voila. Now he has all the information he needs to set up his attack.
I'm sure you can think of other similar scenarios.
So, as you can see, I'm not asking for Skittles, blinded by the rainbow, I'm asking for a useful piece of information, backed up by what I think is a very reasonable (toggleable) precedent.

10726, This is not a good point

As this "color where" could be toggled on and off by choise in the similar fashion color of exits and roomnames is. The actuall relevant questions are whether or not 'where' should provide this additional information and is this addition worth the coding time of Imms. The first question defines whether or not it should be done and the second, correct answer to it is decided by each Imm involved individually, answers to the question of whether or not it gets done.
