How about some edges to make retreat useful?
Stunning Retreat - Before retreating, you throw your openent off-balance so they can move at the same time you can.
Long Retreat - You can retreat two rooms. Instead of 'retreat e' you could use a command 'retreat e n' and you would retreat two steps.
