I've tried searching this forum and the QHCF forum but must not be looking in the right place - what are the factors that determine whether or not a drive is successful and can I plan on getting mileage out of it without high strength or the ability to enlarge?

You should be fine.
I find even normal drive is decent on a normal size weak race, so I'm sure the legacy will work really well.
