216, first time player..a few ranger questions
Posted by Notorious INS on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
well this is my first time playing any kind of MUD at all, played D&D once, etc..so anyway..I decided to go with a h-elf ranger..so far its fun..still in the newbie ranking and a few ranks to go before PK'ing is a problem..but I have a couple questions if any of you can help (keep in mind I never RP'd befoer..so im trying to think along those lines):

1) As a ranger I would think I would be self sufficient in the woods. So of course the first thing I thought of us ,..food and water..I found a bunch of good water sources (emerald, darsylon, faenwyld(sp?),etc) But food is a lil more tricky I have asked a bunch of older rangers that I've seen around and they always say..just wait until you can butcher..but I want to know where edible nuts and berries are, roots, etc

2) Where is a good place to learn? I found lumberjacks in galadon..that seemed like something a ranger would want to kill..but then I received less and elss exp from them (expected)..I then followed someone around and killed elves and turkeys...now that did not seem like something a ranger would do..but any hints on where I would go? Again I asked a ranger I saw on..but he was nearby killing Ugruks? that didnt seem like something a ranger would kill either

3) Where is a good place for a ranger to find gear? Im nearing pk range..so id like to be decently equip'd and be able to find stuff if/when i get killed

4) does spending more time in the woods increase any of my abilities?

5) I hate a-ps..teleport,charge, lightning bolt, invis..come on now..

thats it..if you actually read all this..awesome..if you can answer a couple questions..even better

thanks,
F

My advice would be, walk before you run. Don't restrict yourself to natural non-butchered foodstuffs until you know the mud better. Group with people and it shouldn't take too long to get the butcher skill.

It depends on your alignment. You learn much better when in a group of 3, and someone in this group should have an idea of where a good place for a ranger to learn is. Let them choose the place.

help newbie2

The above, if I'm not mistaken, refers you to some very low level areas where you can get the basic set of gear. Some people might turn their noses up at this when they reach higher level, but personally I believe that skull rings/ charred bracers etc are perfectly adequate to rank on, and that you can pick up the rest as and when you are lucky enough to have it fall into your hands. Try asking your groupmates where they got something they are wearing. Don't expect them to tell you the origin of their entire outfit. Don't go on and on about gear (because it isn't the main issue). Just ask each person you travel with about one basic item, and do it when you are resting, not when they are asking you to ambush the taglo (a mob).

Yes. It lets you creep without lag. Very useful. Also at higher level it improves your defenses. But mainly, you can only use your strengths as a ranger in the woods. If you wander around out of them you will be disadvantaged when fighting other players and until you are more knowledgeable this will get you killed. You can't camo on eastern road to avoid that ap. You can camo in the woods. I do suggest that you run a few steps and immediately camo though, rather than camo where the ap probably saw you sitting around. Also, camo next to some tough mobs so that if he fireballs the mobs all attack him. (He can still faerie fog you out but that requires more preparation on his part and is less likely.)

Rangers can use scrolls and staves, which enables them to get cheap detect invis without drawbacks. Rangers can use potions, which enable them to go invis BUT even if you don't know about these, camo is better than invis as fewer people can see camo.

Rangers can teleport (potions). I would suggest you gather up some items and sell them in shops before you hit level 10. At level 10, use that money to buy a potion of recall and if possible, also a potion of teleportation. Ask around IC to find out which cities sell these.

Butchering is the primary means of sustinance for a ranger. Edible berries and nuts etc. can be found a number of areas. If older rangers seem less than helpful, explore a little more or ask other people. You can do it!

Good places to learn for rangers are pretty much good places to learn for almost anyone. Like you mentioned though, you need to filter through the list taking into consideration your RP. help NEWBIE, help NEWBIE2 and help AREA are good places to start looking. You are on the right track in emulating others, though.

Your best bet is to find gear lying on the ground in areas where a higher ranking group has gone through and killed the mobs wearing it. As a new player, you should be checking out all the facets of the lower level areas, like gear, mobs, etc. If you can get gear from the creatures, fantastic. Now wear it and check your score. Did it change? If so, how? Keep that in item in mind. This process should continue as you advance in level and go to higher level areas. Soon enough, you will get a regearing plan that you can execute by the time you unghost.

>4) does spending more time in the woods increase any of my

The more time you spend in the woods, the better almost ALL of your abilities will be.

>5) I hate a-ps..teleport,charge, lightning bolt, invis..come

Detect invis preps can be bought or found in game. Keep asking IC and someone will point you in the right direction. Also, APs can't see camouflage. You have a big advantage there.

Very very very smart choice in picking a ranger as a new player. Versatile, able to hide from a huge majority of the MUD and has some decent offensive capabilities, not to mention you can heal yourself.

and where there is one walnut, there's bound to be more. That was the specific area I was thinking about, too.

221, Couple quick pointers:

- "area" lists all standard areas in the game. You can also look only for a specific level range- see the helpfile for the command. Use this to narrow things down to places where you'll be able to stay alive, and also have terrain appropriate to you.

- Keep in mind that most ranger abilties aren't only applicable to forests- other wilderness like mountains, desert, etc work fine.

- You're given maps of the general area layout when you first enter Thera. If you've lost them and you're under level 11, see 'help outfit'. If you're level 11 or higher, they're available for sale in some towns fairly cheaply.
