1990, Help with Warriors?
Posted by Sintor on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I'm brand new (some may have seen my other topic) and I've now gotten several 20+ and one 30+ and one thing remains constant: No matter what gear or class, I can't seem to touch a warrior. Even with 23 hitroll, aim + precise aim, etc. I can't hold a candle to them. Am I doing something wrong? These warriors are typically five or six levels lower than me and they simply annihilate me. I go defensive with a shield on my melee characters, defense that can tank mobs 5-8 levels above me witih no hits, and they blast right through it. I can't seem to land any special attacks (even ones I have at 100%). My mage type chars... They just die instantly I haven't had a chance to try anything really.

Just looking for some general help or something. My assassin (highest) whom I would think would have the best chance, missed 42 attacks in a row and while avoids a lot of hits, the ones that hit me do almost a fifth of my hp. I don't mean this as a whine or a nerf warriors and I understand that these are probably crazily twinked out super geared up low level warriors who delight in killing weaker classes that haven't had a chance to mature yet, but I am looking for advice on fighting them.

Thanks!

If you missed 42 attacks in a row, you had lots of chances to use active skills.

"Active" skills like wheel kick (and better yet, sweep kick which you can learn when wheel kick gets over a certain level) should be able to win you that fight.

Sweep kick is particularly nice as it lowers the opponent's moves a little, so if he is low on moves when you start to fight, he may be unable to flee.

If you are alive long enough to miss 42 melee attacks, you are alive long enough to kick the guy to death.

That said, I would tend to start with any maladicting attacks you have. These are attacks that make an enemy fight worse. An example would be caltraps.

Blindness dust is also good, because you can (a) move in and out of combat as you choose, (b) lower his hitroll, which can matter if it gets too low. Finally, it means that if you disarm him he can't get his weapon back!

A decent warrior will almost always school you (sans-marital trance)

You are susposed to survive till you can maledict him enough that he drops a weapon or both and can kill him with trip/throw/laggingkick.

kote and kans will lower his dex (along with caltraps) so he defens less, as well as his str so he drops weaps. A crunchy will drop one automatically.

If you are mising 42 attacks in a row, its safe to say, you're NOT going to suddenly like land like 8 in a row and kill him.
You need to blind/disarm or kote/kans.

With mages, well, you need to last till you get your classes damage reduction spells to really do #### (unless you're a transmuter lol) versus a warrior.
After that, stacked and good ones will still rock you and you need abs.

On low ranks and midranks to some degree warriors do rule the world, especially comparing to mages.

Actually, in most cases mage will just die to a warrior on low ranks without any chance to win.

What should you do as a mage:
Powerrank. The only exception to some degree is invoker. With all other mages powerrank. Conjurer - to 27 (angel/demon), shifter - to 3rd tier form, transmuter/necro - dont know, never played them

Seek your sleeks. You can start do this from 25, I think. With them life will be pretty easy and fun.

As assassin:
Go for hitroll and HPs do have enough time to kote/kan + dust them. If kote fails and you gushing - vanish away. Or dirt and then vanish.

General advice:
Post logs or describe certain situations. Will get concrete tips.

Read FAQs on Dios.

Make IC friends, who will help you. Gank with them. (yes, I know many will blame me for that, but if you can not be cool PKiller, try to gank).

Solid stuff. Pardon the newb but when you say "seek your sleeks", what is a sleek? Also, what is a good hitroll for 30-35 Assassin?

My last specific situation was an A-P that summoned me when I vanished and three-rounded me, connected every attack and two bashes. Kote missed. He had one of those titanium spears I've seen a couple people with and probably oodles of hitroll.

Hopefully your spear skill wasn't at 1%?

Sleek wands, each mage has his own set of sleek wands with aura, barrier, shield spells. Somewhere in the world. Search on Dios and here for more info.

For assassin - dont remember exactly, I played them loong ago. I just think that you should not gear for damroll only, keep in mind hitroll and HPs as well. 25 should be enough, I think, but not sure. I am mage player, not warrior-classes

Some classes (including assassin) have easy ways to escape. This is blind. So, if he summoned you, dirt/dust him first. Then you can vanish and run safely (unless he has cure blindness preps, which are not so easy to get and if he has them...well, at least you die to a veteran :P )

Practice all your weapon skills. Hone and love all your defense skills. Read about them on Dios. AP should not outmelee you, generally assassins are better in melee, imo, especially if AP uses spear, not axe.

The problem of assassin is bash/trip. So, if you see enemy around (where command) or going to hunt, use enlarging preps. They are easy to get. Then they will be surprised by missing bashes.

AP does not need hitroll as you do. As I know, the chance to make kote/kan is dependant from your hitroll. Thats why you need it.

That was the problem. 1% Spear.

The Dio's FAQ page is down or I cant get to it, says page not found.

Edit: I meant to ask, is backfist broken? Seems to do nothing to my unarmed fighting at all. No wield/shield, single wield main, etc. Behaves exactly like unarmed did for me pre-backfist.

I did not used this skill at all. Have not practiced it even. Dont fight unarmed, use weapon

Again I tell you to read FAQs on Dios. There are two about assassins.

Blind first. If there are other, not enemies and you can harm them (mobs as well) then dirt. Dirt on dwarves should be good (not sure, though)

Dont spam in battle, so you could get your weapon if you been disarmed

Dont kote unarmed opponents, there is no sense in this. Kote is an improved version of disarm, in general. But here it gives you almost nothing.

Your HP is very low, maybe you are an elf/drow or you just have poor gear. Dont know.

You should beat dwarf hand spec without any problems in your midranks, I think. More experienced with warriorlike classes will tell you more, I think.

And about sacrificing weapons - why not? You are his enemy, should he let you get it and kill him?

Ooh, don't be to sure of that. Hand to hand speccs in midrank are actually very viable. :D I LOVED Berak and he started out as a hand specc.

Look at the log, dwarf hitted him with mauls. Thats enough. Maybe he was naked, of course, I dont know. But if I see this, I would switch to blind/dirt + throw immediately and outmelee him without any problems.

Kote could be nice and could be not in this case. If you used it, okay. If not, then I would try to stick throw or axe kick.

Don't keep using kotegaeshi when you've landed it the first time.

The only time it is worth using it repeatedly is if you are hoping to get the "crunch", which then means the person can't use their offhand, thereby depriving them of shields, two-handed weapons, wands and the like.

Other than the above situation, once you hit the first one, it is worth switching to a different skill, such as throw (although not in this case, since hand to hand specs can roll out of throws). I'd probably have switched to sweep kick. Kicks are reliable damage.

Well yes. He managed to get rid of your weapon, and he wanted to make sure you couldn't pick it up. Most likely he couldn't pick it up himself so he got rid of it. And as you see early in the fight, he is hand to hand specialized (vital area), I don't know the assassin class at all, but isn't there something else you could have done ecept for the kotegaeshi? Command deny him? Trip? Just make sure you don't lose your weapons. (Because a hand to hand specc warrior beats a unarmed assassin for sure.) :D

It's not normal, but it isn't uncommon.

Basically he's removing your ability to re-arm with that weapon, without encumbering himself by picking it up. Some people do it, some don't, because they know it's a pain from your point of view.

However, it might be that a nightmare blade is evil, in which case a maran might be sacrificing it for role-play reasons.

I finally played one so I feel qualified now!

Backfist isn't going to do crap to your unarmed defense cause... well they are two different skills. But backfist has a nice little feature that makes it seem defensive. What DOES do a lot is Master of Atemi Waza edge which boosts your hand skills a little bit.

What backfist does or seems to do is it cancels one of their attacks and replaces it with one of yours. It's similiar to riposte. It CAN happen with a weapon in your main hand and nothing in your off hand, but I noticed it happening bunches more with both hands open. You'll see an echo like...

You step into SOMEPERSON'S slice and deliver a swift backfist.
Your punch DOES SOMETHING to someone.

There also seems to be ways to make this happen more (by doing assassin stuff you'd normally do anyways).

I typically got four attacks with my hands (dual wielding fists an assassin trick) and then two to three backfists a round after I lowered their dex a little. Sometimes all my regular punches got parried or dodged, but the backfists are unblockable. (I had Master of Atemi Waza and Master of Uraken edges)

Axe warriors are going to tool you until you get enough HP to survive a couple of pincers, mace warriors... I dunno I never fought one but I assume cranial is going to slow you down a lot. Whips and Flails are going to pose a problem if they have ANY idea what they are doing. I got tooled by a 27th level fist user from two pummels. But if you are reaching level 35, ping a sword or fist user with a sleep dart and they shouldn't beat you unless they are just really good. Occasionally the warrior is a fire giant with +str gear and it takes kote, kans, poison, nerve strike, and your momma's kitchen sink to make them drop their first weapon.

I honestly never got my hit and dam much passed 30 and 25 and it typically cruises around 25/15-20. My warriors typically ran around with a 30/30 to a 50/50 and ocassionaly higher. Assassins do better with light armor so they can dodge (watch your weight) and I find hitting often with smaller strikes and not getting hit at all to be as effective as trying to do a warrior beatdown. I also geared for HP because I like having 1000+ hp and I think it's pretty. I also value save vs spells and save vs paralysis higher than damage.

But backfist makes using hands pretty viable, so I wouldn't listen to what everyone on here says. If someone is hitting you more than you are hitting them, you need to switch to a weapon however. You ultimately need to explore tinker and figure out on your own but a little help and outside experience can help you digest what you saw.

If ap was over a certain level (34 I think), he would have had the bloodlust spell. That makes him much better at hitting in melee.

Also, if you don't know a weapon well, you won't parry it nearly as well. It is therefore worth practicing every weapon so that you can parry that kind of weapon better. Start with the ones that are more commonly used.

Also, when he summons you, it lags him for a round (he can't do anything for a round afterwards). One thing I like to do is just to walk off, and make him waste mana summoning again and again. Then make a run for it.

Warriors can surly be a pain in that ass at the lower levels. They tank good, they do good damage and if you haven't met the warrior before or looked at his weapons you have no idea what he is going to do. Alot of damage? Get rid of your weapon by droping strength? (If he hasn't that choicen he'll most likely go for dirt/disarm.)

As the above said, play your favorite class to con-death or age-death. Learn what you can, then go and play a warrior and learn what you can. Best way of learning a class is by playing it. I've returned from a 6 years abscent, and the only three classes I've played are warriors, shifters and paladins. I have quite some troubles with most other oponents I meet. ^^ (Done 2 hero warriors and one 44+ the past 4-5 months, so I believe I know warriors quite decently now.)

It takes time, but it is fun learning. heh

It takes a lot of failed attempts to get good at PK. You can post logs and ask for comments of what you did wrong. Many people will gladly give you their two cents.

You have to analyze another player's build and exploit their vulnerabilities. Know who you are fighting (race, class, spec) and know what to do against them. There are different tactics for different classes.

It's hard to tell you what to do with the information you've given.

The best advice is to play the character you like best, play it to age or con death and learn all you can. That's how you learn about this game.
