1820, Edges

I don't understand the edges and how to use them.
From the helpfile on edges it's clear that exploring, imm rewards, etc. will give you edges. However it seems a little unclear about some things, racial edges in particular. Does everyone get to choose their racial edge? How do I do that?
Are edges like practices where you get one and then use it to pick an edge or does it work more like thief skill points where you get points towards edges and various edges cost various levels of points?
Assuming I get to choose edges, how do I choose them? I use 'discuss guildmaster' frequently and I get experience and stuff but never any mention of edges. Is there a way to get a list of what edges are available to me, or do I just have to try every single one and hope my guildmaster will just give it to me?
Once you get an edge, do they have levels like skills? i.e. will it always just be 'on' or does it improve through use?
A quick "Rade/Idiot's guide to edges syntax" would be great.
TIA, Rade

In the help files there's a list of edges for each class. Could those lists be turned into links for the relevant help file of each edge? I think that would make it a lot easier to browse them. Again, thanks for the previous response(s).

I think most of this is answered in the below post. If it's not, let me know what's still unclear. A few extra comments:
>Does >everyone get to choose their racial edge?
Not necessarily.
Here's some of the things that can be requirements for edges:
- Level - Skill/spell/etc. at X% - Strength/dex/etc. at a certain level. - Alignment - Ethos - Class - Race - Having another edge - Not having another edge
So meeting the race requirement is necessary for a racial edge but not necessarily sufficient.
>Are edges like practices where you get one and then use it to >pick an edge or does it work more like thief skill points >where you get points towards edges and various edges cost >various levels of points?
More like thief points.
>Assuming I get to choose edges, how do I choose them? I use >'discuss guildmaster' frequently and I get experience and >stuff but never any mention of edges. Discuss guildmaster is it. If you don't see anything, you aren't eligible for any edges yet.
>Once you get an edge, do they have levels like skills? i.e. >will it always just be 'on' or does it improve through use?
Always on.

When you have built up enough of the required experience and met certain prerequisites for edges, they will appear in a list when you discuss with your guildmaster. If you don't see any edges, then you are either not a high enough level, didn't get enough of the right kinds of experience, or else didn't get your stats/skills to a high enough level to learn any.
If you want edges, most people start seeing them at about 20th-25th level, although probably nothing too exciting until later. Try having a good description and a page or two of a well-defined role, so you might gain a small bit of Imm experience early on. Also, try looking at everything you can, particularly items in rooms that you wouldn't normally look at (like that dresser, open tome, or journal entries you find lying around) for some observation experience. And if you can find hidden rooms, really explore them well, as every little bit of observation experience helps in the long run.
As far as improving at an edge, they aren't really like skills. They either make certain skills a little better, or change them slightly. They will always be "on" as long as you are doing whatever it is that makes those skills/abilities work.
Most edge lists are in the helpfiles and will show up if you search for EDGE LIST. If there is some kind of a prerequisite, it is usually strongly hinted at in the helpfile.
