39292, Gumbldink is no more.
Posted by Wilhath on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Alright, so something happened that made the character untenable in my mind. We'll leave the reason for the deletion at that.

Goodbyes:

Immortals

- Aarn: My experiences with you were by far and away some of the happiest moments I've had on CF in a long long time. You never stopped being funny, supportive, and just an all around great imm. If I decide to continue playing you will see more from me, that I can assure you. I am really sorry for letting you down this way. If I thought I could have continued on under the circumstances dealt I would have, if only for you.

- Eshval: I assume it was you who took the form of the Empress that one day since you rubbed my cheek on one of my follow-up trips to Seantryn. Thank you for that, it really gave Gumbldink something to do with the myriad hours of downtime. It is something Acolytes should probably do more of anyway.

- Innis: I thought for sure I was going to get slayed time and again for what I would often say about you. I don't know how much more emasculating I could have been in regards to you, but it was all in good fun. That time you came to us in Kiadana-Rah and covered me in the scent of summer and flowers had me laughing my ass off. Thank you.

I think those are all of the imms that were openly involved (other than as an immortal or mob) in Gumbl's life. If there were any others sticking their fingers into the pot please let me know. I always like knowing who was watching.

As for goodbyes to mortals, I couldn't possibly remember everybody that I interacted with so if you post I'll respond.

As for Gumbldink's role, which I'll be paying for and hoping that it will be up speedily...

Gumbldink never wanted to be a healer. He never wanted to be an Acolyte. He never wanted to be Prophet. He wanted to be an axe wielding dwarven berserker in the depths of Mortorn throwing himself at duergar and generally putting his life on the line for his kin. He was terrible at wielding axes, but I would often practice with axes when I was bored. I'd find some out-of-the-way place and wield an axe and do emotes of me imitating axe specialists. He was urged by the Moudrilar monks to take up the more peaceful arts and so he did, but he hated them for it and he hated himself for everything he'd become.

You can't look at him and say he was a bad Acolyte, however, because he was doing the shieldy type things first and foremost and the dwarven berserker things once he'd gotten to the bottom of his "To do" list. Everything I post in Java's thread on Shokai's forum I did and I would definitely try to do these things before I got involved in any combat situations.

I'll leave the role at that. One thing I will say though is that the hero ranks are really stupid at this point. You've got people starting fights with others out of the sheer boredom of it all. Why are neutral villagers attacking Fortress warriors? Why are druids feature-abusing to kill villagers? Why are uncaballed gnomes killing everything that moves? It's really stupid. Having a druid chameleoned outside of the Fortress while an uncaballed evil assassin (city dwelling if ever there was such a thing) kills the maran trying to lure me in is stupid. Anyways...maybe now I can get my dissertation finished.

Bloody hell, I'll miss you for sure. Kiel though Gumble Dink was cute, but he was never, ever 'flirtin wif' him. First time I saw you you were this fat dwarf sitting outside the Palace helping with a retrieve. That was when I was level 25 or something.

And on and on through Kiel's entire life you were around some way or another. That fat dwarf I'd always be able to argue with. Har. I think I called you too many nicknames already - Gumble, Gumble Dink, Gumbly, Dink, crazy dwarf, etc... You're a fun player. Make a fun character again :)

Really a pity to see you go.
After you rescued me from a Deathtrap I stepped in to rescue someone else and receiving this tell from a maran: "he thinks ye be pure of heart, but asking the almighty's above to bestow growing a beard on ye equal to his." I started to rethink my intention to not join a cabal with that char. ;)
I wished I could interact with you more but our times were not a good match...

Good luck with your dissertation =)

You know. You, of all people, given the sheer amount of #### you sucked up from people complaining you weren't playing an Acolyte the way they wanted you to be playing, should be the first person to take a step back and not accuse other people of poor RP or attacking you out of sheer boredom. There was more going on that you are unaware of.

Good luck with your dissertation.
39352, I don't know man
Posted by Wilhath on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
You left me alone for the vast majority of my life and in the last week or so ratcheted up your aggression towards dwarves to the "Will pursue him into the last bastion of the Light" level. Gerylanst told me that since he has broken the back of the source of magic (meaning there's no mages in his range anymore) that he was taking the war to the potion-users. Then I see logs of druids calling the hunt on Gerylanst while they briartangle another battlerager to death.

I'm not blasting anybody's RP as the above are certainly viable RP choices, I'm just saying that boredom makes for strange enemies. Edit: If it's imm driven it's almost worse, because then I can't even give anybody props for pursuing some of the more dangerous aspects of their role. They're only risking their shinies because an imm told them to, more or less.

As an aside, I'll be passing out a petition urging the imms to automatically make any air/offense gnome shifter evil at creation.
39353, Long long ago in a CF far far away.
Posted by MissinDaOldDays on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Warlock, Maran, and Acolyte within the Fortress.
Sylvan rocked, but the Tribunals and Villagers had some very very
cool RP as well. Scions and that bizarre neutral only faction were around as well, and the players in either guild I ran into definately yacked a lot about their agendas and how yours was thwarting that.

Played a Maran, first Maran, first caballed character.

There was a cool, twin Goddess of magic worshipping, Storm
villager who attacked the Fortress to get at mages and the
item of the Warlocks. First time EVER meeting a giant mace
speccy, definately stuck in my mind.

Maran were TOLD to break laws, enter guilds(if the guild guard was not good aligned), enter any cabal ecetera to get at evil and defeat it. They were also instructed to do whatever they could to stop an evil act and if they could not assist to immediately seek aid from elsewhere within the cabal.

I knew nothing, had no idea of even where to go, but I tagged along with my weak butt spear/staff, whip/flail spec. Definately could aid from a control standpoint but man I could not hit worth beans. :P

Now to a strange bizarre present CF near you.

This time I have witnessed Maran who would rather not fight, Acolytes who would, people doing things that would have had the booted from Maran in them days.

Some of the best RP I witnessed came from Evils, my character's enemys.

Some of the strangest Imm actions in the game, back in the day the Imms tried to stay out of character affairs. They facilitated character development, now they seem to want to manipulate it. Subtle difference but seems the new batch O Imms are constantly involved in mortal matters.

I hear players saying things like PK, strength up gear, etc etc. Heck even I slipped up a couple times using non RP terms simply because it is so prevelant.

Some descriptions accepted these days at level twenty and beyond would have been yanked aside and given a polite "here is how to make a half decent description". Players were not told that they "did not have to have a role to do well"; they were told that having a role was a good thing and helped interactions.

There was talk about new things, revamps, and cool things all the time on the forums. Imms and players loved chatting about this and that, now Imms dictate and self congratulate on the forums. Hmm.. maybe that symptom is also shown by in game Imm involvement.

What I am getting at is that people are deleting, all ranges of characters, because CF is not nearly as player friendly as it used to be. I read the player deletion reasons on Dio's forums, and here. The majority are disgruntled and disenfranchised. Vets leaving off with words of contempt and disgust, not cool, not cool at all.

Oh well, Whilath, I guess you too ran into an unacceptable amount of in game bizarreness. I hope that maybe the Imms realize that the current trend of vets leaving is a bad thing. Them leaving disgruntled is worse because new players read forums. The need for five plus voting links on the mainpage should ring alarm bells too.

Good luck with your disertation. Come back maybe there will be some consistancy in the game again! Just like them old days.

I don't second this. If people want to play gnome shifters, they should play them as neutrals. If they want to murder it all, they should play evil from the start instead of playing a gnome. Gnomish serial killers who attack random people deserve to be turned evil, but this doesn't mean that all people who play certain combo should be turned evil just in case.
39359, The Gnome Shifter Phenomenom (GSP)
Posted by Aarn on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I think his point was that the majority of gnome shifters these days pretty much ARE evil, despite the fact that they have to be neutral. From things I and other imms have seen, I would have to say he isn't too far off. I've been quite disappointed with the roleplay from most gnome shifters I've watched in recent times - very few people play them like the neutral 25-wisdom race that they are.

Remember people, being a wanton mass-murderer *is* evil, even if you kill evils too!

39360, RE: The Gnome Shifter Phenomenom (GSP)
Posted by Aiekooso on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I would like to point out something I've observed. Someone gets turned evil a lot quicker than they get turned good. That should be the same across the board. You see neutral characters who only aid good and do not but strike evil. This group of "good" rarely gets penalized. The last I remember was Twynker and he was almost 400 hours old before anything was done.
39370, RE: The Gnome Shifter Phenomenom (GSP)
Posted by nepenthe on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
That's not really the nature of good and evil. Easy to fall, hard to come back.

The analogy isn't perfect, but if in the real world I do charity work with disadvantaged children for a year and then murder a busload of them, I probably wouldn't be considered good or even neutral.
39372, RE: The Gnome Shifter Phenomenom (GSP)
Posted by Aiekooso on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I agree with you that they wouldn't instantly be turned good, but they should lose their magic. ie ** Do towards your overwhelming sympathy to the cause of light you feel cut off from your source of magic.** This would discourage the gnome lightwalkers. I can think of a couple of these I saw with my last character.
39363, One would think...

As an aside, a few years back I put a (rarely seen) special weapon in the game as a reaction to Gnome Murder Shifter syndrome.

I think the story of Khalghaver to go with it was lost in one of the many Lyceum updates/juggles. I'll need to rewrite it someday.
39373, A certain spear that probablly shouldn't be named.
Posted by Aiekooso on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
If that was it I hated that damn weapon. With recent changes I'd hat it even more now as a shifter.

Guess it pays to read those area dedications once in a while, eh? I didn't notice anything particularly special about it when I found it though. Guess I'll have to try experimenting with it on gnome murder shifters :).

I tried to be a good friend. I thought of Gumbldink like a big brother. Yeah, he'd punch you on the leg, twist your arm behind your back, or give you an indian burn, but at the end of the day he was the only one who was allowed to do that. Anybody else had an angry dwarf on their hands.
39340, Great job!
Posted by Heas the dwarf on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Let me jump in here and say that as a heroimm I was constantly listening to cabal chatter, and was amused by the twist you put on dwarven personality. I thought your role was clever as well. All in all great job.

You had me cracking up with a mortal I am playing. I can't say too much, but man, did you have me rolling on my floor.

Well that blows. The Fort definitely takes a hit with you leaving. I had lots of fun with this character over its course... you had a clever role, and a good take on mixing dwarf-attitude with healer-acolyte. One day I was going to try to get you an axe that you could wield or something, but it never panned out. :P

I hope to see your next soon, the mud needs more characters of Gumbldink calibur. You're welcome to come back to the Fort and/or follow me any day!

I was waiting on you to ask me what type of weapon I wanted for my leaderweap. The answer was going to be AXE! Even if you didn't give me the skill I was still going to ask for an axe. It's been a long time since I've felt a character like I felt Gumbldink. The last one was probably Keniston and that was forever and a day ago. I guess what that is telling me is that I'm a better RPer when it's a goody. It's hard for a psych student to be a mean guy and enjoy it I guess.

I'm expecting to see a forge in the Fortress! I didn't gather 1000 gold for nothing so don't think that just because I deleted that you can pocket those coins and use them to buy hops for your ale. I will either be a Fortress member again or I will be breaking in looking for it :)

The first time you came on me I just did the old flee;blade barrier trick and you left me alone for awhile. I'm not sure why I didn't go back to that the second through 10th times. You Outlanders were really a pain, though. I can't walk to the Fortress because I'll end up in briars. I can't succor because some piece of dung will come in and kill me during the lag. Usually I'd just gate to a snow badger and hope it was one at the redhorn gate.

Well done on keeping me on my toes.

I thought this was a great character - a trash talking hard ass on the outside, but I think all your friends saw the poor soft mushy healer underneath it all. Very well done all around.

I always had fun stealing your beard hairs, and I can't even imagine how many tail feathers I lost to you - you're lucky you could justify it with a healing sleep. All those times you put me in healing sleep against my will always had me laughing. And that time with Innis in Kiadana making you smell all flowery was hilarious.

I was also glad to see you didn't lose that set I gave you within 24 hours. ;)

Hope to run into you with your next healer!

Yeah, Gumbldink was a cupcake on the inside. Most people who hate themselves are. You taught me sooooooo much in the area knowledge department. This character involved a lot of firsts for me. First time to Trothon, first time to Underdark Sea, first time to Yzekon, first time to the newer hero areas in general. Thank you for all of that.

And yes, I could've made a down comforter out of your tail feathers. I never lost the full set, only bits and pieces (mainly the damned stoneform amulet). Thank you for that, it was a fantastic boon.

>Having a druid chameleoned outside

>trying to lure me in is stupid.

For the record, that druid and I rarely if ever coordinated anything. I'd hit his briars on the way to the Tara'bal, then offer up an ad hoc alliance since we both wanted you dead.

Also, it was never my goal to lure you into briars. I knew you weren't going to die to the two of us in melee, though that may have been the druid's plan. My only goal was to mark you, enabling me to track you down later in some out-of-the-way area. For example, the Arkham Crypts. That's what I meant when I responded, "Believe that if you want," to your claim that my having killed the maran was "pointless". Like I said at the time, I got what I came for.

Anyway, I didn't "know" Gumbldink well, but you were obviously doing something right to get the leadership position and heinous set you carried around for so long. So kudos for that. I'm still disappointed my gate gambit didn't pay off, though. Stupid random number generator. Guess I can get rid of this now:

That was one of the first things I did whenever I logged on. I always knew you were near the Fortress when you were logged on so I usually just avoided it during those times. You got me twice. Once in Aarn's shrine which is dumb. Dorn could sense evil but didn't have it up for the duration of our long ass chat. Additionally, for whatever reason Aarn's shrine is a goddamned death trap since you can't word/teleport out of it and can't sanctify it. *boggle Aarn* The second time you got me was in the Forgotten Crypts. When you assassinated me I realized what you had done with the attack on the Maran. Thereafter I never stayed in one place long if you "drew me to the Maran."

I don't think it's likely for a hero to be thrown into the sirine cell. But it was an interesting though on your part.

>That was one of the first things I did whenever I logged on.

Pshaw. I'm not "always near the fortress when I'm logged on", I just check it periodically when I suspect someone's likely to be there.

>You got me twice. Once in Aarn's shrine which is dumb. Dorn could
>sense evil but didn't have it up for the duration of our long ass

Yeah. I don't think I knew that about Dorn at that point in time, but I probably would have tried it anyway. I also didn't realize Aarn was there, which nearly cost me my life. Mad Aarn = Scary. btw, Dorn: always have that skill active. Always. Set a trigger if you have to- I don't think there's much lag.

>The second time you got me was in the Forgotten Crypts. When you
>assassinated me I realized what you had done with the attack on

>"drew me to the Maran."

That explains why I wasn't able to get you again. Unfortunately I was ignorant to the full utility of the staff of wonders when I nailed that assassinate, otherwise I would have swiped it for sure, if for no other reason than to make you less dangerous as a gate spammer. I only knew about its two other uses, not the one you used on me.

>I don't think it's likely for a hero to be thrown into the
>sirine cell. But it was an interesting though on your part.

Again, ignorance on my part. I thought the prog was automatic. I had another idea in store for you, but apparently it's not possible to gate to that location. Bummer.

You may have taken some guff on the forums, but I thought your act nailed. Gumbldink wasn't just an Acolyte, he was a dwarf, and as you said, that entails a lot. I had you pegged as a future leader as you made your way up the ladder and was happy when I heard you got Prophet. After all, you saved my can more times than should have been needed.

I figured you had played a competant healer before, but had no idea who the player behind the character was. I hope you enjoyed your time on the Fortress side of the fence.

Toooooo many healers. Must kill.

I love CF dwarves. I think they may be the most culture-rich race in the game. Unfortunately, if you act in a stereotypically dwarven way as an Acolyte you catch heat from people on the forums. Forum-flames don't really bother me though. I tend to play characters that rub certain people the wrong way (Vinson anathemaing that minotaur, Gumbldink being a dwarf Acolyte, Quevea being the stereotypical drow bitch, etc.)

I did enjoy my time in the Fortress. It made me much more dangerous as a player I think. You don't get the opportunities in other cabals that you do in Fortress to go out en masse and learn things about explore areas or just hard areas. I found out where so many things are, including wands, great weapons/armor, etc. that I may not have ever learned if not for playing a goodie.

Azidreth was awesome to have around. Hopefully we'll be fighting on the same side again soon.

Another great character from you. Any cabal that gets you in it for a healer can't help but do well.
Good luck with the dissertation! You bloody well should be focusing on that anyway!

I've gotta stop with the healers already. Three straight hero healers is just too many. I'm on a crazy leadership streak too. I think my last 4 or 5 characters have been leaders. I think I'm ready for the quiet inconspicuousness of an uncaballed duergar axe specialist.

Etisrrus was a great character and a bashing piece of dung when Gvan was around. I learned early on that the trick to fighting necromancers (forget) and anti-paladins (worldbind) is to have a teleportation potion in your inventory. Armed with that knowledge I had no qualms about chasing after you if you escaped the Maran.

Good luck with whatever.

You were EVERYTHING that Dwarf should be. Hell you were everything a player should want their character to be! Dedicated to your roleplaying, ALWAYS in character, and a hoot to play with!

Axes high Gumbldink! And to you, player of Gumbldink, I hope your dissertation rocks and that you have the best of luck with it.

I was probably one of the "stupid" heroes you speak of but I tried to keep ALL my actions in character and with the sphere of deception my hero deceived himself all the time. ;)

Good luck!

I'm not sure which hero you're talking about, but it doesn't matter. I just wish Empire or Tribunal would gain in strength because I'm tired of the horde of Outlanders and Villagers. There are two Imperial healers coming up, so hopefully they can right that cabal and get it back into some sort of power position. Right now hero range is WACKtastic.

Yyuffi was interesting. I'll say that.

No more cooshee singing I guess. Thanks for letting me see some of the things you know. Also it was just a damn riot to be around you. I also appreciate our Aarn talks, and helping Dorn down the path of "dwarven enlightenment". You'll be missed.

Yeah, it was always fun having somebody to make fun of elves with. As far guiding you along the Path O' Aarn, you're welcome, and damn you for not having your evil sense up. Assassinated in the shrine... how embarassing. Good luck with Maranhood and kill me a druid.

Excellent done, I enjoyed to be offered a redemtion from a crazy dwarf :) you was a... dwarf :). Only once thing I didn't like - when you got your ass first to my corpse in tir-talath :) damn dwarven thief. Hope to see you more.

Good luck with your next,

Yes, I tried to be a dwarf first and foremost instead of a human in a funny suit. I had the racism, the hypermasculinity, the pride, etc. You were in a pain in my ass with those dispels, especially with a basher around. You can't even quaff a reduce potion in case your protective shield gets dispelled, because chances are the lower level reduce is going to get dispelled too. Bleh.

The thing in Tir Talath was funny. I located your corpse and it was in a Private Home. Well I checked all of the homes in Balator first, thinking Gerylanst's fiend must've gotten you or something. Nada in Balator so then I had the eiphany and went to Tir Talath. I got there just before you.

Good times.

Geez, how many people confuse me for Eshval anymore?! Maybe I shouldn't of went so far as to give those items to you, but hey, in the end you deserved them and worked hard for them. The bit with the Empress was just unexpected, go down there to play and get some laughs, end up getting 4 or 5 of you to dedicate time down there. Then the exotic dancer the next day, that was just funny. Alright, well it was me that was just to fun, I've gotta take credit for that :P. Nice job with it though actually surprised me seeing you down there doing like you said!

I could have sworn the rubbing of the cheek pecho when I was interacting with the exotic dancer involved the word "Muse." Oh well, thank you then Dreaa. That was awesome.

Heh, the echo was of the Muse, but it wasn't my doing either. I had some help with the whole guard bit also, but I'll leave it up to them to nose in and take credit for the echo ;) Anyways, your welcome and I'm glad you enjoyed it, it's why I'm here. :P

I hate to see you go, you were always fun to have a good (stupid) arguement over the cb with. I laughed so many times throughout your career as a member of the fortress. Just the other day I was looking back through my logs and reading the time I inducted you. I still laugh. You were very enjoyable to have around, and you played a good Prophet, even if you were a rage dwarf. It was a pleasure to have known Gumbldink, and I will miss picking on your beard. Good luck on the dissertation.

The elf who was forever trying to get a piece of my beard for use in arts and crafts. You were somewhat of an imperfect target for me. You were an elf and an Innis follower, so Gumbldink had to make fun of you, but you were also the Cardinal which made it a somewhat delicate path to tread. Other elves, particularly Maran elves, were much easier targets for my shenanigans.

I'd like to see that log if you can post it.

Yeh's a worfless fargin' floppy-wristed, pointy-eared, thin-shinned, cooshee frollickin', flowa sniffin' bastid and yehs know it.

While we didn't interact much beyond you thwarting my retrieval attempts, I have to say that is a sign you did a good job as a healer and acolyte. The bitter dwarf came accross in the few things that you said to me, and I figure if that little interaction conveys a role, you're doing something right.

Hero ranks won't get better without more folks. Come on back when you can.

The bitter dwarf thing definitely blossomed with age. My initial role posting lays the groundwork, but the RP took on a life of its own somewhere around the time I became a full Acolyte. I was like "Hey, wait a minute. This isn't something Gumbldink would actually be proud of." and it took off from there. I think my speech got worse as time went by too. Again, an RP hook that took on a life of its own.

Anyways, we didn't interact much, but at least you gave me something to do. Towards the end having lowbies raid was exciting for me because otherwise I was probably sitting in the guild in Hillcrest or exploring some lowbie area.
