Well, that's too bad - if you were having problems levelling you definetly should have asked in the Fort, I would have helped you if I could have.

Anyways! Cool character from what I saw, hope your next paladin works better for you!

Ama!
37624, It was Fortress Business that was making it hard for me to rank.
Posted by Grymm on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I'd go out to explore, and there would be a raid. Oftn One I oculd do nothing about, but I was afrad to ignore, because it seemed that if I ever suggested doing anything besides Raiding or retrieving I was accused of cowardice.

Hell, I was getting to the point that I was hording equipment so I could regear people so I could rank with them. I even tried to give away my weapon once, just to get a group going.

Sometimes I'd get a group together, and their Cabal would get raided. A couple of times I just helped some younger characters rank, hoping I'd be able to join them when they advanced some more.

There is one thing I'd like to mention. I noticed there was at least one hero who was trying to get into the Fortress. I don't like that idea. They were able to bypass the hassle of raiding and retrieving and thus hero'ed realativly carefree.

Any hoot keep at those shields!

In regards the the raiding and defending, most of the time, you can get away with not raiding if they have enough. If there is only one defender, and three are already heading there, I'd not be opposed to just ranking more so that I'd be better able to handle it. The hero's are the ones who should be focusing on the raiding and retrieval. You have to choose between the two, and I don't think any of the Immortals are going to get angry with you if you choose to go ahead and continue growing stronger and fighting the darkness instead of attacking the enemy cabal. And often in defenses, unless its a single attacker, a paladin is not going to make much difference without being able to sanctuary the outer guardian! By the way, roll up another fortrite! I need new ranking groups since it seems everyone is switching to Empire!
37637, I'm working on two of them now, possibly a third.
Posted by Grymm on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
What ever one I come to like the most I'll keep.

I think I'll be an Ally though, not a memeber, Cabals just are just frustrating and boring for me. But I'll be up to you in a week or so probably.

Well Let me say that I had fun with Grymm, Fist Paladin over 25, First Maran.

And I was completely incapable of sealing a kill. I only remembered to call lightning one time. When I had an opponent fleeing.

I don’t think I ever held more than 10 gold at any given time and That would be taken as soon as I came to defend.

If you haven’t guessed I had no area knowledge of the Heroic ranking areas.

I felt like a complete laughing stock when it came to PK. And I was, I think I had one kill from a Strike of Faith on a Convulsing Duergar that was ballsy enough to attack my group of three.

Emonnev is the only character I am truly impressed with who ever fought me. I typed in Delete when you killed me in the Inn that time because I was so embarrassed for letting that happen. I typed in ‘F’ instead of ‘FL’ and The one command I got was ‘Fill what?’ then I died.

I underestimated you.

I didn’t the second time, you just got me good because I had let my Detect Invis fall and thought You had quit to avoid a fight with me. It wasn’t until ‘Someone’ passed me a couple of times did it sink in. Any way. Good job, and I understand what you were inferring to I think when I gave ye the obligatory ‘Ye coward’

Argentiana? WTH?? I loved your Character. I think she’s auto deleting though and that’s a shame, but you are a great player, keep it up. I loved our time together, and even wrote you into my role but lost the script and never got back to reposting it.\

Scierra, Sorry for getting mad at you that day. I was tired of asking the same questions over and over again only to be ignored.

Azidreth thanks for Bringing me in I wanted to do more with you but we were always raiding and counter raiding. So My advancement nearly stopped once I got in.

Aarn, thank you for the Empowerment. I’d never interacted with you before and it was a blast.

Ontylirn. What did Grymm do that rubbed you wrong?

Peryll Sorry about that last spat. I hate sitting in the Inn and wanted to get away, and I didn’t agree with you. Heh, still I always had a blast with you.

Talianna, I loved traveling with you, especially you an Argentianna. If I hadn’t seen you two together, I would have thought you were twins.

Cytheria You are great, no doubt in my mind who you are as a player, but keep it up!

Grumgar yeah, your power grab as soon as you were Maraned was transparent. I wasn’t trying to get you to split power, I was trying to explained that if you are going to lead you need a unified front. I wanted to suport your idea because all we did was rus in piecemeal and get savaged. Then first thing you do on the next raid is rush in alone, as did Caradoc and Cythera. Any hoot, it was becoming unfun by that time I just wanted to rank and never could.

Aarn, one more thing;
Was that a Virtue you gave me ? I got a couple Echoes, but I only saw the new Sups and Skills. When You came to me as the Guild Guard, I knew of them, but I didn’t want to appear power hungry and just run off with them.

I missed being made a maran, until a couple people told me Congratulations,

I was having fun with Grymm, at first but getting destroyed at every turn and losing some 3 or four con in one or two ranks was wearing on me. I never had the money for preps, and I felt bad when ever I asked for them, if I wasn’t able to repay someone for them.

Over all I didn’t like being a Maran, I prefer Solo to any Cabal. I was finding impossible to rank and survive, because of my responsibilities, the one time we had an Awesome group going Aarn calls us out sends us on a couple raids and Uninducts the two who were helping me. (They had it coming though, heh.)

I know I rubbed a lot of you the wrong way, but I wasn’t about to play an artsy fartsy Dwarf. Blun and to the point as all good dwarves should be. Still I tried to b respectful about it.

I would love some advice on what I could have done better in PK, don’t say prep, sadly I know all to well the affects of a hasted Bash specialist. Still What ever you have I’ll take.

I’d like feed back on the good and bad of him too.

I’ve been cultivating a couple of new ideas and Grymm was just starting to seem less fun as these ideas began to grow.

Ah well.

Thanks to all I’m already in the fields again.

Ah! I'm going to miss your grumpy ways and making you give up on being grumpy down in Underdark! I wish you could have stuck it out though, a two-handed ded dwarf paladin can be dangerous! Which virtue where you given if I can ask though? That can make a difference too! As for being a Maran, its not the deathfulness that makes a true Maran, but how you play it! And from what I saw, you were certainly good at being a Maran! I can't say to much or I'll give myself away, but we'll see how I fair in the hero ranks soon enough! Good luck and come back to the fortress! I can always use another grumpy body to cheer up!

Talianna, Shield Maiden.
37585, =) I don't know if they were virtues or not.
Posted by Grymm on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
The only reason I ask is because Another Paladin was talking about his.

I'll let Aarn decide if I should say anything. I think they were pretty good sups and skills though.

If there is something called a Virtue, I have no idea what it was, and I wsn't sure where to look.
37586, If you got supps that weren't originally on your list
Posted by Daurwyn on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
They are probably as a result of a virtue you were given (which is pretty much a collection of additional supps).
37587, RE: goodbyes
Posted by Aarn on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Ah, sorry you deleted. It is tough to seal kills with a paladin, it takes a bit more planning. And even then, you just aren't going to kill as much as some other classes will.

Yes, that was a virtue you got. There are six virtues, and each one is made up of a small group of somewhat related skills and spells.

Anyhow, good luck with your next, hopefully I'll see you in the forge again!

Aarn

Man IC I liked you a lot, and OOC a did like you a lot. I never meant to piss you or anyone else off. But IC I was bloody pissed at all of us for arguing and that, which is why I wrote that specific note. I am very sure you would have went well in the Fortress. You'll be missed. I wish you all the best for your next. Well current one now. You better not be making an Imperial:P.

:D

And that would Argentia's player.

She decided to go find a nice quiet place to retire to
after losing her twelth point of con in two weeks. :D

Damn iron! Damn damn damn iron!

Oh well that is two characters down: Argentia and Gfelzni.
Both let down by Grymm at one point or another! :P

He was just too busy to show that poor girl the ropes and
well he just hated Gfelzni. :D Poor minotaur, hated by all
sides except the Ladies of the Light. And Argentia was well
nigh helpness till she learned how to choke.. then it was
"Gang bang her! She is dangerous!"(I SO wish she was scary)
Greeeaatt... so after I was down to about 6 con I figured
time to retire!

Hope you stick around, I have another character just lookin
for someone to pester. Dwarves need only apply! ;)
37603, well

In character I had all the reason to see you killed as much as I could.

Now usually that is countered by an OOC wish not to multikill anyone but your name was Grymm so that didn't stop me. I'd be going after you more if I had seen you more.

That beeing said it's tough to fight as the underdog, especially if you're not prepping alot, I feel your pain. I hope you learned a thing or two from your experience with Grymm and I really hope you picked a better name for your new character.
37607, Maybe I'm being stupid
Posted by Daurwyn on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
But what is wrong with his name?
37609, A guess
Posted by Wilhath on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
Phonetically it's either "Grim" or "Grime."

37630, Maybe I'm stupid with this thing too.
Posted by DurNominator on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
But I can't see anything wrong with the name. If Kresh did it because of some phonetic connection he saw to grim, I think he's nitpicking with names, as I couldn't make such connection. The phonetics of a written form are different in different languages, so people tend to pronounce the names in different fashion in their mind. I didn't pronounce Grymm as grim, so I think digging up such connection is nitpicking.

And the reason cannot be the fairytale brothers Grimm, as the name is different. This reason would also be phonetic nitpicking, IMHO. But seriously, Kresh. Do enlighten us on this issue.
37661, Heh. You can't see how Grymm sounds like Grim?
Posted by DeathClawUnreg on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
In that case, I'm totally rolling a char named Fuqju.
37673, About the name
Posted by Kresh on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
In swedish it means cruel. Often it's used as slang to describe someone or something thats very cool in addition to its normal uses.
37681, That is one of the dumbest things I've yet heard.
Posted by Grymm on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
You see, the game is played, by and large, by English speaking Americans/Canadians/Autralians/Britons, with the Odd Russian Swede an Finn and even one Asian thrown in.

37687, Advice: Ignore the names that are bad in your language.
Posted by DurNominator on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
>In swedish it means cruel. Often it's used as slang to
>describe someone or something thats very cool in addition to
>its normal uses.

I've seen plenty of names that are bad in my language, but it is also good to realise that there is a good chance the player who chose it might not be aware of the OOC meaning in other language, so PK:ing these people for the name is not very nice thing to do(thus, I didn't go after chars like Raja(due to the shortness of the word, I didn't think this name as OOC at the time that char lived), Sikari, Turpa and Runkkari(Though knowing that this one was intentional, I almost felt like PK:ing him for it, though hating a necro need no OOC reason)). This also applies to vague slang terms in English, as people from other countries cannot be expected to understand.

To clarify the title: ignore the name being bad, not the character.
37615, About the name.
Posted by Grymm on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
It was a respelling of Grim.

I've been busting peoples butts about names for so long, I decided to say the heck with it! They are having fun with names that are cool but seem close to being unacceptable. So I wanted to see if I could get anywhere doing the same.

That being said, after a while, I just grew into the name and It became part of the customer.

I have some commentary!

>If you haven’t guessed I had no area knowledge of the Heroic
>ranking areas.

This is one area a cabal, especially a benevolent/friendly one like Fortress, can really help you with. Assuming you ever get breathing space between raids, ask around on the cb for suggestions of where to go. (For extra-good suggestions, describe the group you plan to take, since some areas, especially nearing hero, are better for some types of groups than others.)

The same goes for equipment. "This necromancer keeps kicking me in the junk. Can you give me suggestions of where I can find armor that protects me from spells?" Sprinkle with dwarven cussing as appropriate.

>Over all I didn’t like being a Maran, I prefer Solo to any
>Cabal. I was finding impossible to rank and survive, because
>of my responsibilities,

It's hard, but I'd bet you also learned a lot from it.

>I would love some advice on what I could have done better in
>PK, don’t say prep, sadly I know all to well the affects of a
>hasted Bash specialist. Still What ever you have I’ll take.

This is mostly what I replied to answer.

I only watched a couple of your fights, but I noticed you tended to try to chase people down with a macro/alias/whatever for murder (name) and then hiltsmash in quick succession. This isn't an especially good idea because:

1) Not every PC at all times are a valid target for templars defense at all

2) You might've hiltsmashed the target before, making doing it now useless overkill, and

3) Most importantly, if they weren't in the room to be murdered (or were, but fled/wimpied before the hiltsmash), that's an extra command you gave up. While you're trying to hiltsmash a guy who isn't there, they're going east one more time and getting further and further away from you.

Granted, all things being equal, the prey almost always has the speed advantage on the pursuer, and I'm not going to say that's the only reason you couldn't chase people down and finish them off, but it can't have helped. Maybe try just going with the murder next time, and even only throwing that if the person is in the room when you walk in or you have a strong suspicion they will be.
37616, Here's were's my tactics.
Posted by Grymm on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
If my Mana was below 50% I started with a Murder.

If My mana was above that I'd Start with a wrath.

I'd hilt smash if I could simply because, I was disarmed three or four times right off the bat in a fight.

I wasn't sure how long the Hiltsmash lasted or if it was working because I busted one guy in the head and he disarmed me.

I was just going with what I'd red on the Boards.

I tried to hold off my Strike of faith until the end, unless they were making a noable dent in me, then I'd try to run them off with it.

As far as Saves go, ask Emonnev about those! Heh, I kept myself Divinely protected. Still, You figure I would save 10 or more times in a row, except for sleep. I only saved those maybe, MAYBE half the time. It may have been more or less but I was able to start the fight before they got it off.

Did Templars Def, actually help my defenses any? It seemed to be offensive, and when I botched a manuever, it often caused me damage.

I can't get a PBF sheet but I only had two kills that I recall. In large part becuse I could't get any commands off due to pera lag.

I know there have been tweeks to Bashing and such in groups. But with the Bash legacies, and other lagging skills, I think it do nothing but add to the game if only the tank could Bash/trip. Cheapshot of course could come into play at any time, but the Tank alone can execute thing like, Throw, Bash Trip. Maybe Ploes spears and staffs could from the back.

Isn't there enough of an advantage to the attackers since they have numbers anyway?

Anyhoot thanks for the advice. It's appreciated.

Thank you so much!
