I was expecting a summon from the Emperor and was spamming to get the first attack in on him.

Then he summoned and you jumped out and started tripping me. I think he was as surprised as I was!

He, actually, should not trip but go for the assassinate. I didn't know he was in your range when summoned you, though. Good fight, good plan.
