114760, So long, and thanks for all the fish
Posted by Zulghinlour on Wed 31-Dec-69 07:00 PM
I've decided that it is time for me to move on, and put CF in my past. I haven't played a mortal in CF for years, and I'd rather spend my time creating the kind of game I'd want to play again. The changes I want don't necessarily line up with the rest of the staff anymore. This really isn't a new decision, I haven't put any time into CF since the end of January. I thank everyone on the staff and all the players for being part of a fantastic time in my life.

It's very easy to be an Immortal who is Immortal because he wants to have the powers to reward/punish and feel himself almighty.

But it's almost impossible to be an Immortal who is Immortal only because he loves CF.

I wish you good luck, but i know how hard it is to live while being really good and kind person in RL.

Thank you for everything you have done, and especially for your tiny fugue setup as that is what I am still using today. I hope you will be having a good time and one of my greatest memories is when my entropy assassin snagged your axe in galadon and the rp around giving it back was fun.

I'll never forget when I lurked back here after a 5 year hiatus and saw Santa Zulg, and here was an imm *responding* to people's ideas, even putting in some of them. No project plan, no red tape, just yes or no!

I'd been gone for awhile, and just said wth and asked to add back in the numeric attribute for stats at low levels, what I thought represented this whole philosophy of intentional mystery/confusion/rewarding-vets, and boom, you did it! (and i've been ever grateful). Those little details (felar faceslash ftw) have made huge differences.

The staff as a whole has been more transparent on the forums and to an extent in the helpfiles on how things work the past few years, and I hope that will continue.

Thanks for your efforts, and more than anything, for listening.
114917, Thanks for all the work you put into CF.

never happened. I'd love to check out whatever you do next. Maybe this will ruffle too many feathers, but if you do get involved in something else that you find fun to play...can you let us know? That being said. Thank you so much for everything. Santa Zulg was awesome and probably only a very small drop in a very large bucket.

Thanks,

CF might not die without you, but boy will you be missed. You put in so much for us players, and I appreciate all of it.

Honestly, what will we do without Santa Zulg? All the things you do probably kept this game trucking hard.

Good luck with whatever you do, hope it rekindles your own fun stick. I do hope you'll be back someday, but it's less work and more play for you.

Zulg:

I have been playing since December 1994. I hope you just take a break and then come back.

You killed me when you were a mortal.

I am part of the silent group that has been playing for years but never post.

Thanks for all you do and did.

If you do not return, you will be missed.

Just started lurking around here again and I see this. Wow this has gotta be the end of an era. I know we haven't talked since like 2007 but man you've been an institution in this game and have done a ton for the game. Glad to see you kept this place alive and ticking and saw it weather plenty of storms. In an era of watered down mechanics in MMO's and crappy freemium games it's good to see an RP/PK enforced MUD still has legs.

Good luck out there in the industry. What kinds of things do you develop now? I saw somewhere you were developing for mobile platforms? Hope that goes well. Stay in touch if you want, I found my way back into the industry as well.

That's awesome! Having dealt with both MSFT and Sony platforms from the developer side for years...I can say without hesitation it is 1000% easier working with the Microsoft side of things. I would be a very happy man if I never, ever had to deal with Sony's submissions process, paperwork and...just all of that mess ever again. Very awesome to hear you're working on that stuff.

Hell, maybe we'll cross paths sometime.

From a player perspective your contribution to CF over the years has been amazing, from huge but important code changes such as the dual wield, resistance and shifter revamps, to name a few, which without your efforts probably would never have seen the light of day, to smaller bug swatting and the greatly appreciated yearly Santa Zulg. You will be sorely missed, but I'm sure we all wish you the best of luck in everything. Take care!

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away....

I was searching for some warcraft pud's on the ole interwebs and I happened upon this website that had a bunch. I was waiting for them to download on my screaming fast 14.4k modem of doom and I checked out more of the page. There was a link for some game called Carrion Fields and I clicked it, launching telnet and flushing a large portion of my time over the next nearly 20 friggen years down the drain. The site was Strahd's Unofficial Carrion Fields HomePage and if not for those maps I would have never been able to find my way around.

I had Immed Phenolphox like a month or so before Zulghinlour did. I remeber you kicking the every loving #### out of me when we were both morts.

I only ever had one follower of yours, some ####bag drow healer but it was fun.

So thanks for the warcraft .pud's!
Thanks for introducing me to CF!
Thanks for helping me kill Maceath meltyface when we were heroImms.
Most of all, thanks for all the changes you made to CF to make it more fun and playable.
Thanks for keeping the playerbase informed on all those changes and how they would affect gameplay.

Good luck in your future endeavors.

For the first time I am worried for cf!

Thanks for all you've done for us.

Word of advice though... Remember we players can cheese you off fairly regularly.
Don't scrap your new venture the first time that happens, please!

Ive had concerns about cf too but it's more that game balance isn't regulated in the way I'd like. Some stuff like anti gang code is great. But sometimes I think the
pendulum needs a nudge back to the centre, whichever way it's swung.

If you start something new, any chance it could make grouping more attractive? As it is, grouping comes at the price of much lower skills and spells.

Best of luck!

Its been hard when you as a player seem to align with certain imms, and then they leave. I do hope you come back - I'm a stubborn SOB and I'm not going but that's only because it would break my heart to see something I've put 16 years into fade away. I do hope you come back.

You took on some of the really onerous tasks in keeping CF alive, and I'm sad to see you go. For what it's worth, I don't think your vision for the game is really all that different than that of the rest of the staff--but I also like the variety of different perspectives that the staff bring to the table, so I probably have a different experience of that.

Loved knowing you were around...felt it was coming due to the fact that you'd be a bit more visible or vocal other than Santa Zulg. But hey! I'm sure your next project shall be a success. You're awesome!

Take care and don't be a stranger!
114765, Thank you for everything you've done.

You'll be missed, big Z.
114777, Thank you.

For all the time, energy, ideas, and fun that you allowed all of us to have over the years. You dedication was above and beyond anything a free to play games sees, and it did nothing but enhance every single one of our experiences. Come back and visit every once in a while. You will be missed.
114776, Wow, this is quite saddening.

Granted, I think as all of us begin to find other things in life, CF has just sorta dwindled with very little fresh blood being added over the years. CF would not be even close to what it is and I have a hard time believing it will last much longer if you're leaving. Good luck with your future endeavors! (P.S. Come play Darkfall with us. :P)

I've been out of the game for 4+ years. I appreciate all the hard work you put into this game. Good memories. Hats off to you.
114771, Zulg! Nooooooooooo

Wowza. This is a huge loss. Thanks for all the hard work and incredible determination/drive. Good luck in all your future endeavours.
114769, This hurts, it really does.

The amount of time you put into this game, all the work you've done, I can't find the words to properly thank you for all you did. Knowing you were there to be the guiding hand and voice of reason among the staff was also an extremely reassuring feeling. Thank you. The sinking feeling I have reading this and knowing it's not a joke, it hurts a lot, but I think it is probably a giant weight off your shoulders. GLWYN *wink*

Best wishes to you and your future endeavors.

I guess not, huh?

So....now what?

Also, I really always have you to thank for Strahd's page which was how I finally became good enough at CF to compete while I played a lot. Thanks. I hope being an immortal again was worth it, and GLWYN?

As a side note, very classy to quote Douglas Adams on your way out. I liked that.
114770, Ditto about Strahd's page

That website was what really helped me get good at cf when I started out. So double thanks to you Z! You've been helping us since pretty much the beginning!

>I guess not, huh?

I believed it when I said it, multiple times. We all grow and change.

> So....now what?

Not sure, I've got a handful of ideas, but mostly I'm just not going to think about things for awhile and relax.

>Also, I really always have you to thank for Strahd's page

Being an Immortal and being an administrator taught me a lot. There's things I'd do differently a second time, and maybe someday I will.

>As a side note, very classy to quote Douglas Adams on your way
>out. I liked that.

One of my favorites, and it just seemed right.
114766, Thanks for all you've done! nt
