You would get a message telling you.
If you didn't get a message telling you, then he probably died to something else. e.g. A mob, or as has happened to me in the past with one of my victims, the waves of the western aryth. That was a pain because the guy was not going to survive and he was worth around 4 to 5 charges each time I got him. An orc called Gurgudu.
