I think an appropriately titled role entry is often the best way to handle this, but some guidance is better than none.

Personally, I prefer characters that grow and change, but I'll qualify that. I think the best characters do change throughout play but also have a lot of constant to their character as well.
A character who constantly changes direction because things aren't working out with the paths they pick and goes any which way the wind blows isn't all that interesting to me. A character who is easily identifiable as basically the same character at the start and end of their life but also undergoews real growth and change is.
