Therisa the Protector of Faith, Harbinger of Thar-Eris, Harbinger of Thar-Eris

Description

You see a small gnomish woman with large, sad, brown eyes and dark brown
hair. She appears small even for a gnome, but it does not appear to be her
height that is lacking. Rather, she seems far more slender than other
gnomes you have seen, almost too slender to be healthy. Her skin is a dark
tan like many of her kind, probably from gardening or some other such
activity. Gnomes are known for their large gardens, and you can see that
this woman's hands are rough and there is dirt caked under her fingernails.
Although, the illusion of a simple gardener is shattered when you glance at
her attire. Simple gnome or no, this woman seems dressed for combat. She
wears armor to protect her body, and a large mace is strapped to her belt.
The expression she wears upon her face is hard to read, but it seems a
mixture of sadness and some other strong emotion just below the surface.

The Personal History of Therisa Graremeth
Added Thu Feb 26 03:43:14 2004 at level 9:

Therisa was born three years before her parents inherited the Graremeth farm.
Her parents loved her dearly, and had plans to teach her the art of planting
and reaping the crops. The great cycle of life. But sadly, all of that
changed shortly after they inherited the farm. Therisa's father was not
willing to allow the abuse of their farm to continue, and vowed to put a
stop to it. He confronted the men who were claiming to protect them, and
told them that they could protect themselves. Shortly afterward, bad things
began to happen. Therisa's aunt was found murdered at one of the vegetable
stands, her money robbed and her inventory destroyed. Robberies of the
stands and shipments increased dramatically. It was all too clear what the
cause of the new problems was, and soon enough the men came back to offer
"protection" to the farm again. Therisa's father was not a weak man, and
was stubborn in many ways. He believed that hard work should pay off, and
that those who do not earn their money will surely not prosper. He refused
to pay the money.
------
It took only a short amount of time before the first of the family began to
leave the Galadon area. Bad things continued to happen to the farm and
family, and Therisa's father was not giving in. Some of the family left for
Hillcrest, and others for neighboring towns. But those who stayed lived in
fear. Many more accidents occurred, and yet Therisa's father did not give in.
Therisa was growing older now, and her father and mother taught her the ways
of farmlife, the sowing and reaping of crops, the tilling of the earth. But
this experience was always colored by the dark times which were upon them,
and Therisa was always aware of the bad things happening. One day Therisa
came home from an errant to find the farm in flames, her father and mother
desperately trying to douse the flames with what water they could find.
After that, the rest of the family fled the area, leaving only Therisa and
her parents in the burned out remains of their home on the outskirts of
Galadon. They had saved a bit of money and intended to use that to get by
while they rebuilt their lives, but it was not long before the thieves
were at their door at the house they rented, this time demanding money they
claimed they were owed from the farm. Therisa's father refused, and even
went to the local magistrates to try to protect his family, but the law
seemed blind to their troubles.

The Family History of Therisa Graremeth
Added Thu Feb 26 01:45:14 2004 at level 5:

Therisa was born to a poor family in Galadon. Her family had moved from
Hillcrest several generations ago in an attempt to earn a living selling
vegetables. Her family has always been gifted in agriculture, yet Hillcrest
is already overpopulated with farms and nearly everyone has a garden. So,
they came to Galadon to make their fortune. They bought a large house on
outskirts of town and started a modest farm. Before long, they had plenty
of vegetables to sell, and they set up a roadside stand near the western
gate of Galadon to sell their crop. They began to make money, slowly at
first, but soon they were taking in quite a bit more than they had hoped.
The family expanded, the farm grew larger, and the profits continued to
increase. Soon the Graremeth family had several vegetable stands, plus
exported vegetables to other towns with their growing legion of donkey
carts. Things were good.
-----
However, where there is money in the city, there are eyes watching from the
shadows, rubbing their greedy hands together. Such was certainly the case
here. The Galadon thief guild has their hand in many business's pockets,
and they did not fail to notice this farm which began to flourish on the
outskirts of their town. They wanted a piece of the pie, and they meant to
get it no matter what tactics they had to use. Soon the family was visited
by men bearing what seemed a friendly offer. If they were to pay these men
a small fee, only %2 of their profits, these men would offer protection to
the family farm. The farm has just recently (conveniently enough) been
experiencing robberies and vandalism of their equipment, so they agreed.
But the %2 offer only lasted a few years. Soon the men were back asking for
more money, saying that their costs had gone up. The family reluctantly
agreed. A few years later, the same. And a few years later again. By the
time Therisa's parents inherited the farm from Therisa's grandfather, the
fee was at %15 of the total profit. Far too high, thought Therisa's father,
and he meant to put a stop to it.

More thoughts, feelings, progress.
Added Thu Mar 25 03:56:09 2004 at level 40:

Therisa has gained much insight and many experiences through the years.
The following are new thoughts, feelings, and actions since her beginnings:
----------

The wood elves are supposedly free and natural creatures who are respectful
and nurturing to the land. And yet, in the wood elf city there is a great
usage of the metal adamantite, the most damaging metal to Thar-Eris. Therisa
is conflicted by this, and has tried to speak with the Wood Elf King about
it many times. She had aslo sought the advice of the Ancients on the
subject. All to no avail. She feels that the wood elves need to stop their
use of adamantite or be made to see the err of their ways, but will await the
Ancients' advice before taking action.
-----

Therisa has been taking a more direct approach to the death of her enemies
of late, taking risks to catch them by surprise and slaying them without
support of others. She has found value in this approach, though has also
learned lessons. She does not discontinue her belief that the best way to
serve the Crone is through the strength of others. It is simply that she is
expanding her tactics.
-----

Delromsin, the shapeshifter, has shown interest in Therisa romantically.
Though she is not oblivious to this, she cannot return the feelings. That
part of her life has been stripped away by the graphic witness of her son
and husbands' deaths.
-----

Therisa feels she has been a faithful servant of the Crone, tireless in her
pursuit of the enemies of Thar-Eris and the Crone, and has used the healing
touch granted by the Crone as she promised upon empowerment. Though she is
humble, and needs no recognition for her work, she will soon seek the mark
of the Mandala so that the world may know the source of her power and place
credit where credit is due, the Coven and the Crone.

Beliefs and Feelings
Added Thu Feb 26 04:50:10 2004 at level 9:

Therisa's family had always been followers of Amaranthe. As farmers, the
cycle of life and the seasons were their main focus in the religion, and that
is where Therisa began as a blooming priestess of Amaranthe. However, the
death of her family changed her focus greatly. Not that she does not still
believe in fertility and the seasons, for she knows they are all important
to the Cycle of life. But she chooses to focus upon death, and with it
rebirth. She feels that what she has been through in her life is but a
reflection of what is happening all around. Those who run the society have
too much power and abuse it, and society is set up to allow it to happen.
There needs to be a death of these ways, and a rebirth of the world into
something better. She hopes that her healing abilities can help to bring
about this rebirth. She will help give life to those who she feels will do
the natural world the most good, and refuse healing to those who do not
deserve it. She will not often be the cause of death itself, but death is
not something she will shy from. It is an important part of the cycle, the
most important in her mind. For without death there would be no change, and
without change the world would stangnate and cease.
-----
Therisa will not back down from a challenge or a fight, unless absolutely
neccessary. She gets this from her father. Though it is seldom she will
pick a fight, whoever starts one with her had better be ready for her to
fight until the end.
-----
Therisa bears hatred for the Tribunals and the guild of thieves for what
they have done to her and her family. It would be very difficult for any
one of those to ever befriend her, near impossible. She will never travel
with a Tribunal or a thief.

The Personal History of Therisa Graemeth: Part III
Added Thu Feb 26 04:36:09 2004 at level 9:

Upon seeing how little money Therisa had to offer, the men were quite angry.
They demanded more. Therisa told them there was no more money, none at all!
They did not believe her, and began to tear her house apart. Therisa said if
they kept it up she would scream and bring the tribunals in on them. At that
one of the men laughed, and turned to her. "Tribunals?" he said. And he
removed his mask. It was the very same Tribunal she had spoken with just a
few days prior about the deaths of her husband and parents. Suddenly it all
was clear. Of course the thieves went unchecked. The Tribunals were in on
the whole thing.
"There is no more money," Therisa said, all hope gone.
"Now that may be," said the unmasked Tribunal, "or perhaps you are lying.
Either way we will give you one more chance to deliver more to us. If you
do not... you will die."
At that, the man looked sideways to Therisa's infant son who trembled,
terrified, in a doorway. "Just like your son..." the man said quietly,
and advanced upon the child.
Therisa screamed and lunged for her son, but the Tribunal told the others to
hold her down. Therisa was forced to watch helplessly as the man kicked her
infant son to death before her eyes. The grin never left the man's face as
the baby's blood spattered over his clothing and skin and the walls of
Therisa's once peaceful home. Another indelible image which Therisa will
be rid of, which will haunt her sleep and waking thoughts.
The men left her there with her dead child, truly alone in the world.
Something in her snapped at that point... it was as if a darkness had crept
stealthily into her very soul. She felt next to nothing as she gatherd up
the broken body of her infant son in her arms and walked out of the city
into the surrounding woods. She burried his body by the light of the full
moon, and it was only later that she cried. She cried by his grave for two
days and nights, only being forced to leave by thirst and exposure to the
elements.
-----
Therisa did not go back to the city. Her parents had taught her enough
about nature to get by at first, and the rest she learned from experience.
It was not easy, but she made due and in time considered herself a person
apart from society, made to walk outside the stone haunts. She had been
studying healing after her marriage, and was working as an assistant to a
local healer in Galadon. Her experience and her closeness with nature seemed
to enhance her abilities greatly, and she continued to progress in the
healing arts.

The Personal History of Therisa Graremeth: Part II
Added Thu Feb 26 04:12:07 2004 at level 9:

Therisa was in her adolescence now, but far more mature than most girls her
age, mostly due to the hard times in which she had lived. While at market
one day buying bread for her family, she met a young gnomish man by the name
of Keeneno. They talked for a while and became friends. Freindship blossomed
into love and, just over a year after they met, Therisa and Keeneno were
married. It was a joyous, yet small ceremony. Few of the extended family
would come, due to the troubles had at the farm in the past. Not long after,
Therisa gave birth to s beautiful son, and named him Holian after his
grandfather. Life was happy for a short while.
-----
Holian was four years old when Therisa found herself alone in the world.
She came home one day to find her child screaming over the body of her
husband, his throat slit from ear to ear, his blood pooled on the ground
beneith him. The flies were a cloud above and on the body, sticking to
the blood and all it touched. Holian had blood over his face and hands from
touching his father's corpse. All of this is firmly impacted in Therisa's
mind, a stillframe she sees when she sleeps or if she just closes her eyes.
She grabbed her child and ran out into the street, not knowing where she
was headed, too frightened to even scream for help. She found herself at
the door of her parent's house. The door was ajar, and she puched it open,
rushing inside. And there, seated at their dining room chairs, were her
loving parents, the parents who has taught her to till the earth, to plant
living things and grow them, who had taught her about the cycles of life.
It seemed that they were to rejoin the cycle they had always spoken about.
They were tied to the chairs tightly, their heads obscured by sacks, but
their throats all too visible. They were dead.
-----
Therisa did not know which way to turn. Her family she knew was dead, her
extended family fled and unknown to her. She went to the only place she
could think of. She went to the Tribunals. They had been unhelpful before,
and seemed equally unhelpful now, even with the evidence of three murders.
They said it was likely the work of anonymous robbers and that there was
nothing they could do. Therisa was at a loss. After the burial of her
parents and her husband, she took her child back home to attempt to pull
their lives into some semblence of order. It was then that she found the
note. It had been left on her bed for her to find, but she had not been to
bed, at least not that bed, until just then. The note said that the deaths
are the last warning. Someone would be by to get the last of the money from
the farm, and she had better have it or she was dead.
-----
Therisa gathered all of the money which remained in the bank account and
awaited the thieves. The money amounted to less than ten gold, all told,
the last of the family "fortune." It took only a few days before Therisa
was greeted by strange men at her door in the night.
