Description

The simple ease of shadows roils with the restless motion of this
solitary figure. It is not readily apparent what aspect of form or
dress so rudely demands your scrutiny. He is not exceptional
in either beauty or fetor. True, his curling black hairs cling in
unattended disarray to his flattened skull. Like most of his breed,
he takes no pains for cleanliness. A weedy crop of unruly black
spreads across his chin and jaw, even extending in scattered
growth onto his cheeks. His features are heavy and blunt, sloping
forward in simian intensity. The gnarled, prominent bone of jaw
and cheek frame a thin, puckered mouth and twisted nose which
turns upward at the tip, displaying wide nostrils crowded with
wiry black hair. His ashen skin is porous and pockmarked. Yet
though he cannot draw the eye with pleasant looks, he is
nonetheless distinct from others of his kind. His beard is prolific
and unwashed, but not worn with pride or boasting. His features
are brutal but his body is longer and thinner than the prototypical
duergar. He bears the accoutrements of war, some quite costly,
some shining with gems, but he wears them with unaffected
indifference. They hang upon his body, serve him when necessary,
but he is clearly not distracted by their glitter. He moves without
ceasing but not with fluttering waste. Each glance or action is
precise and ruthlessly efficient. Perhaps the answer to his
contradictory appeal lies in the bottomless depths of his troubled
black eyes, chill waters turbulent with hidden meaning.
