Chapter 2

The Streets

During the time on the streets, Ryfin was witness to a lot of the cruelty
that the rest of his family seemed mostly ignorant of, or at least unwilling
to take action outside their sphere of influence. More than one of his friends
were killed or maimed, for simply taking a small purse from someone who didn't
need it, or run down by a horse because the rider didn't care to take notice of
a street kid. And that wasn't to mention the slavers who were always on the
lookout for young boys and girls for nefarious reasons.

He knew being a captain of the guard was not going to be enough, he also had no
desire to be a leader, he just wanted to make a difference. Make life just a
little bit safer for those he could. He started to attend more training on
the estates but would take the minimum of instruction before heading off to
practice without the rigidness that his trainers always seemed to want to enforce.

And as he returned to the streets he found solace in the shadows there as his
friends did. Although still young, he become a look out and enforcer when needs
be to protect those who were less able to look after themselves. His training
aided much, but he was still far from what he needed to be.
